A couple of things regarding AU wheels: Firstly, the multi spoke 16" wheels Betty is currently wearing were standard on the Fairmont Ghia on the series 1 only, for the Series 2, the Fairmont Ghia got new wheels & the Fairmont got these as standard. So these wheels are standard fitment for Betty (don't know where the Ghia centre caps came from, though). Then, for the Series 3, the Fairmont again got new standard wheels & these wheels became the standard offering on the Falcon Futura for the AUIII. Oh, and yeah, stick with the sharkfins, they look ace!

Repair the puncture for a tenner, wear them out and get new as a pair. The XR wheels are very different and I think the fact they are clean makes a big difference over the slightly dull Ghia alloys.. I would use the XR wheels for now and get the others refurbed..

What I would do is get the tyres replaced on the XR wheels and plonk them on the back because I think they look better. But then, and I am spending your money here, I would have the original wheels but fit winter tyres on them. Only because I like to keep the car original. But then you get the best of both worlds.

I prefer the look of the xr8 wheels, they look a cleaner design, but I'd try to move all the tyres to the original profile, as even a little bit fuller profile might help fuel consumption, plus the fuller the profile, the better the ride should be on our glorious well maintained roads!

I like the xr8 wheels but it needs to have proper tyres in proper size. So get 4 new tyres on these wheels and then have the Ghia alloys refurbished in the meantime. You then can decide definitively and swap the tyres back to the Ghia's if you want. Love that double rear spoiler too btw ❤

I like the look of the XRs and they look in better condition. I would suggest doing as we do here in Canada and have the nicer set for summer tyres (quiet, smooth-running set) and the rougher set for winter tyres. 👍🏻

I like the 5 spoke wheel better. My opinion, for what is worth, put 4 good quality tires on those wheels. Be sure you have a good spare (maybe the best of all the old ones). Then plan on selling off everything else at auto jumble. You have a lot of bits stored perhaps you and Carly could autograph some of the more unique or novel bits of shippable size. Then sell them or otherwise raise money fir projects or the charities you support. Other channels (vice grip garage for one) seem to do this very effectively. I have followed this channel for many year it is one of my favorites because it's relatable. It's not some contrived ego trip with made up drama. It's real people with similar challenges and triumphs as my own. Ian and crew would be most welcome in South Carolina. God bless and keep you and all Hubnuters everywhere.

I'd suggest putting winter tyres on the XR8 wheels (later) & maybe transferring the good pair of tyres onto the Ghia wheels. That way, it only costs you removal & refitting a pair of tyres you already own now, and when you refurbish the Ghia wheel, summer use would stop them corroding as quickly again. Because the XR8 wheels aren't diamond cut, their refurb will be cheaper long-term

If you are struggling to get the socket on because the chrome caps have expanded then hold the socket etc at an angle and it will hammer the caps back into shape and size, okay they will rust and expand again but it usually lasts a few months, I like the Ghia wheels as they were the original ones when you first purchased the car, but the XR8 wheels have nearly new tyres.

XR8 wheels would be my preference. You’ve got the “wrong” wheels on anyway, so they’re no less wrong. Being in better nick they’ll tidy the car up a bit for the price of two rear tyres, as opposed to a full refurb and two tyres needed for the set of Ghia wheels anyway. Refurbing the old set of wheels could provide some content down the line too, if you could film them being sorted - either as a DIY job, or by a company willing to appear on your channel. I’ve refurbed a set of alloys myself with rattle cans and patience and, while not up to professional standards, they’re far better than the kerbed and peeling mess that was on each corner of my car when I got it. Definitely a job for warmer weather though.

Thanks for the great video. Wheels: XR. Tyres: Ghia! Everyone seems to comment on the style of XR wheels - no doubt perhaps - BUT another consideration is Ride Comfort, and the (admittedly only slightly!) greater side wall of the original tyres on the Ghia wheels. Remember Ian, you don't want to reduce Ride Comfort!!! On these very poorly surfaced UK roads! Kind regards.

Those XR8 wheels would be backwards, one side of the car to the other. A common visual problem of '90s and early oughties wheels (ask me how I know) which have asymmetrically designed "spokes". Only one side of the car really looks right, er, correct, if you catch my drift. Take the top spoke in the view of the last vid frame. Its top spoke is leaning backwards. Now mentally move that wheel to the other side in your mind's eye. The top spoke would be leaning forward. Ugh.

If you paint the standard calipers red you could add ST-Line to its meany trim levels as thats what Ford do on their current models. I think the XR8 wheels give it a bit of a style update, can always change back later once you refurb the old wheels if you want to. I wouldnt get them re-dimond cut though as that is generally a terrable idea for durability and is basicly a scam on newer cars to sell replacement wheels when the original suffers damage or laquer peel which cant then be easily touched up.

Absolutely the XR8 wheels on it, mate. Besides being less 'busy' to look at (and therefore a cleaner look), they are a darn sight easier to clean! No, you don't need to paint your calipers yellow, orange or red to suit.😉 Got to keep the level of class up on the beast. Just a thought though - when running the 55 profile tyres, I would be inclined to keep them up the front if the width is the same as Betty's originals (215mm), otherwise the size difference of the lower profile will have your speedo reading a bit faster than you are going. It's not a lot - 5km/h (3mph) at 70mph, but it's there. The AU Fairmont ran a 16" wheel with 215/60s - a very common tyre size - on a 6.5J (6.5" wide) alloy and the maximum tyre width on a 6.5J is 215mm. However, the standard XR8 alloys are a 7.0J and, if that's the size of the new ones, could go to a 225mm tyre. (For ref, the wheel's width is cast onto the inside of either model's rim.) Whether you'd run it on a 225/55 or 225/60 series profile would depend if you want your speedo to read 1.3 mph faster or slower at 70mph (a 1.6% difference in rolling distance - still well within spec for legality....which (from memory) is 3 or 4%). An extra 10mm on the road is not much, but every bit helps pull the big beast up. A 215/60 - like on the Ghia rims - will happily fit on the XR8's wider wheels though.

@@HubNut Oh crap! Yeah, the AU did do that for the models with ABS, whereas previously it was all gearbox related and therefore influenced by the rear end's rotation. Ok - ignore everything I said about placement of wheel (oops!). It's nearly 3am down here, so I'm half asleep already (that's my excuse anyway!) Glad you're sticking to a set of 60-series profile tyres....and I still think the XR8 wheels look better than the Ghia ones

Almost unanimous for the XR8 wheels, I agree. Kiss of death for me was towards end you mentioned the Ghia wheels need to be diamond cut. Given the finite life of said finish, definitely the XR8! Easier to clean, no loss of ride quality potentially as they are same diameter. 😊
