If your Ford vehicle has the fancy electronic HVAC control head, and you’re experiencing a malfunction, you may want to start your diagnosis by retrieving possible error codes that may be stored.

How to enter EATC (Electronic Automatic Temperature Control) Self Test Mode;

0:00 Start
-
1:55 Step 1. Key On, Engine Off
-
2:40 Step 2. Press Off
-
2:50 Step 3. Press Off And Floor Simultaneously, Then Automatic, Wait 60 Seconds
-
3:50 Step 4. Write Down Any Error Codes
-
4:10 Step 5. Press Defrost To End Self Test
-
The Self Test may take up to 30 seconds to complete. You may hear audible noises coming from the vents, or under the dash. This may be the various blend doors, and or motor actuators performing a full sweep calibration. Take note of any error codes. 888 usually means the self test has not detected any malfunction. After the test is complete, press DEF to end the test.

022 - blend door short (intermittent)
024 - blend door fault (during test)
025 - blend door fault (intermittent)
030 - inside temp control sensor shorted (during test)
031 - inside temp control sensor open (during test)
040 - ambient temp sensor short (during test)
041 - ambient temp sensor open (during test)
042 - ambient temp sensor short (intermittent)
043 - ambient temp sensor open (intermittent)
049 - Temperature Blend Door Failure Or Short
050 - sunlight sensor short (during test)
051 - In-Vehicle Temperature Sensor Open
052 - sunlight sensor short (intermittent)
053 - In-Vehicle Temperature Sensor Short To Ground
055 - Ambient Temperature Sensor Open
057 - Ambient Temperature Sensor Short To Ground
059 - Solar Radiation Sensor Circuit Open
061 - Solar Radiation Sensor Short To Ground
115 - intermittent engine coolant temp signal
125 - intermittent vehicle speed signal
888 - test pass/complete

A/C was blowing hot air in my 03 CV. Every youtube video I saw pointed towards the blend door. Luckily I ran across your video and by following your instructions, it reset my A/C! Thanks so much for this valuable resource!

Just replaced my blend door actuator yesterday and conducted your self test of the EATC. Passed everything is good A/C blowing ice cold. Thank you sir 👍

I was close to replacing the blend door actuator on my 2000 Grand Marquis. It had the heat come out only slightly warm. I thought that I might as well try this and see if it works. Now both heat and AC work. You are a lifesaver!

2004 Crown Vic. After replacing a blower motor and resistor I had no heat, only A/C, ran this test and it reset and FIXED! Many many thanks for this information. I did the silicone o-rings last year, and thought a blend door actuator was maybe necessary this go round. You saved me a few bucks and no telling how many hours. (Cars be crazy.)

Repaired mine yesterday. I had 2 issues, 1 - always blowing hot and 2 - always blowing through the defroster. I replaced the blend door actuator, $33 (024 - blend door fault (during test)) and that fixed the Temp problem. Then I ordered the silicone o-rings ($7) and replaced all 4 on the actuators inside the EATC controller. Like you said, see video by FordTechMakuloco for detailed how to instructions.

That worked perfectly. I had no heat and weak air conditioning after doing this I went from 55° to 100° and then back to 55°.

Thanks for this video! My MGM was sitting for a few months before I bought it a few days ago, and it seems like the self-test is all it needed to wake up after its long slumber. :-) It was stuck on heat, but it's all working as it should now.

I have a 2007 Crown Vic Sport with the EATC. It seems to switch between zones well, and click into the various modes of AC, MaxAC and fan speeds well. But it blows blazing hot air at all times in all settings. Low pressure line under the hood is cold, high pressure line is hot, compressor seems to kick in normally. I suspect blend door actuator has failed, but I cannot get the unit to go into self-test mode no matter what I do. Tried many times, will not self test, after hitting floor and off buttons simultaneously, then hitting auto, unit powers on to auto and begins to try to work. I've read that self test must be performed when ambient temperature is between 60 and 90. Could this prevent it from going into self test?

Right on Mark, Thanks for watching. Perform this procedure; kzbin.info/www/bejne/noukpKKnotabmq8 - It will take 10 minutes to complete. After you’re finished, swing down the glove box to the fully lowered position like you’re going to remove it, but don’t. You just need to see, and hear the “Temp Control Blend Door Actuator” trying to perform it’s Full Sweep Self Calibration. When you get into position, have an assistant reconnect the battery, and watch, and listen for the “Temp Control Blend Door Actuator” to start performing it’s full sweep self calibration. If the actuator does not move, this may indicate it is kaput. Here is a video of what it looks like when it’s moving; kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWG5mKZ8mMmjmq8 After you do this, start the engine, turn on the A/C to full cold. If you still need help, come back here, and report your findings. -Chuck

2001 mercury grand marquis automatic climate control. Can hear and feel by air flow the door is moving to separate zones. No cold a/c air. Was cold before I stall, just had to move manually. My question:. Blend door actuator replaced. Still blowing hot. Think I installed wrong. Took old one off, blend door hook arm went to driver's side on its own. When new one installed I just moved blend door hook to match new actuator hook. Should I have actually manually moved the hook on new actuator to match where blend door hook was resting at?

052 sunlight sensor intermittent. Do I need to replace unit ? Can this be the cause of not blowing through the front vents? I have replaced o-rings in actuator and new door actuator. Still not as cold nor blowing thru vents

Yo Peter, Thanks for watching? I'll need more info to help you diagnose this issue. 1.) YEAR / MAKE / MODEL of vehicle? 2.) What is your original complaint/concern with your HVAC Performance? 3.) How long ago was the HVAC system properly functioning. 4.) Is the A/C compressor clicking on/off when commanded to do so? 5.) Have you checked the low/high side pressures with a manifold gauge set? (You can barrow this tool free at AutoZone or similar parts house). 6.) Have you done a cooling performance test by sticking a vent thermometer in the air registers. (You can get a digital auto vent thermometer at Harbor Freight for $5). 7.) Did you recently try to recharge the A/C with one of those DIY kits? Please answer each question. You may want to email all your answers. My email address is on my home page under the about tab. As a general rule of thumb I do not recommend replacing and parts untill they have been condemned by testing them functionally, electronically, or visually. -Chuck

Just did the self test on an 03 gran marquis with the same control unit as yours. Self test came back as 888. Air will only blow thru the defroster.

Hi there..watched your video and tried doing the diagnostics test..it wouldn't start it..i have a 1997 Lincoln Town car..all blender doors are working as far as i can tell its just not changing temperature higher or lower if i push up or down on buttons..ant thoughts?

Yo Cobra, Thanks for watching. Before you begin your diagnosis please confirm & verify these things first; Connect Scan Tool and check for DTC’s. Check engine coolant for proper level. Check Engine Coolant Temp Sensor by viewing scan tool data. Check Ambient Temp Sensor for proper operation. Check A/C Compressor engages / disengages properly. Check Battery Voltage, and Load Test Battery. Check Alternator for proper operation / voltage output. Check all fuses in the passenger compartment, and under hood fuse box. Check A/C Sunload Sensor for proper operation. If you’re EATC Unit will not go into the Self Test mode, right off the top of my head that may be part of the problem. I just referred to my service literature for ‘97 T/C, and it said at the very beginning the temp control must be set between 60F - 80F. Confirm & Verify, and try to do the Self Test again. Under “troubleshooting” for SYSTEM DOES NOT CONTROL TEMPERATURE it says; Circuitry open / shorted Damaged EATC Module Damaged Automatic Temperature Control Sensor And Hose Elbow In-Car Sensor Seals missing or damaged To be clear I’m not telling you to replace any parts, until you have tested them and can verify they have malfunctioned. Diagnosis must come before repair. If you try to “Parts Shotgun” the issue, you may run out of ammo. Sorry I’m not more help. -Chuck

Just to say that I tried the self test which revealed the error code 024..blend door failure. But there were no sounds from the blend door motor. So I followed the advice from another fellow and used the battery disconnect/reconnected trick which closed the blend door. So that may be helpful for Panther owners who do not have the digital dash/ automatic temperature control.

Yo CT, Oh OK, that makes sense. Hey that's a really great tip. So let me run this back to see if I understand. If you have an intermittent blend door malfunction, and you don't have the fancy electronic HVAC control unit, you can perform a blend door re-calibration by disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes, and then reconnecting. That's genius, I would have never thought of that. -Chuck

I replaced the blend door actuator and I sent my EATC away to be rebuilt. When I put everything back together the blend door would NOT work until I did a self test on the EATC and now it works fine. My question is this: I still have a 25 code but I think that is was from before I sent the EATC away and from when the blend door was broken. How do I clear this code and start over?

Can you help me my 04 grand marquis does not blow at all the blend door is clicking but no heat or air blows out the vents at all. what could be the problem? compressor comes on and off and the line is cold. but nothing blows out the vents at all.

Yo Mackrod, Thanks for watching. Did you perform the self test procedure? That should give you a trouble code as a starting point. If you have the manual HVAC controls (three knobs), it sounds like there is no power going to the blower motor. Check all fuses, and check the blower motor resistor. If all those are good, check the blower motor itself, it may have burned out. Let me know the results of these checks, and I'll be able to provide further assistance. -Chuck

I am getting a Code 031 during the selftest of a 2011 CV EATC unit. Is this normal as the vehicle wasn't running at the time but the A/C had been running prior to selftest? Thanks For your Help

Sometimes I will get an HVAC code on mine, and everything is functioning properly. Right on DM, Usually I start with the basics. Check low / high side pressures with a Manifold Gauge Set. You can barrow one for free from most local auto part stores. -Chuck

My 97 Crown Vic has the EATC the AC only works if it's set for 60 degrees, any temp higher than 60 and heat comes on. When I did the self test I get a code of 031 - Inside Temp Control Sensor Open, during test. Do you know how this can be fixed?

Yo ESW, Thanks for stopping in. Ford TSB 97-8-8 is associated with EATC error code 031 on 1994-1997 Crown Vics. Send me an email, and I’ll email you the 7 page TSB. I suggest reading the TSB before proceeding with diagnosis. Next I would pull DTC’s from the PCM with a scan tool. Next I would perform this procedure, and then see if that fixes the issue; kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3Tblp2bfsd6j9k Next I would check the interior temp sensor. Next I would check the interior temp sensor circuit. -Chuck

Scratching my head. I have a 00 MGM - it passes the EATC self test (888) but no blower, no vent, no heat, no ac. All lights / graphics on the EATC function when I cycle thru heat/AC/vent/def but no air flow. Perhaps just the blower motor is kaput? (30A fuse #9 is good)

I was wondering if you had a fix for my climate control in my 2006 super duty diesel pickup truck. There's acts like there's no power to it it will not turn on I checked all three fuses under the dash and I check the fan fuse under the hood and I switched out the relay. There's still no power to the unit. I noticed there was a video about switch the headlight from you know where it turns on when it gets dark and back to just manually turn it on back and forth back and forth I didn't have any luck with that I was wondering if you might be able to explain that process better

Hello, Before spending any money on the parts shotgun I would get a dealer level scan tool and check for codes, and send bi-directional commands to the HVAC control unit. Since you have a Ford I would get FORScan for $20, or the XTOOL A30M. If the control head will not accept commands from the scan tool it might be dead, and I would pick up a spare at the junk yard for $20. -Chuck

Mine reads code 51 and 53. With the engine on it just read 51. But My issue is cold air only comes out through the defrost vents and barely anything through the dash vents unless I turn the air flow knob to the bottom for some reason air starts to come out the vents. When I turn the knob up then barely anything comes out the dash vents and instead the cold air just comes out the defrost vent.

Before my a/c was blowing about 50 degrees, full a/c no leaks. Obviously a vent was opened and letting in outside air. After, the a/c blows 38degrees and acting normal... What's the RED and BLUE buttons for on the a/c dash. I can't figure out what they do.

What do you do if it won't do the diagnostic? Ours is a 2007 GM. It was fine Saturday. We spent 1300$ on getting it working not quite 2 years ago. New Compressor, dryer....etc. There is not much air coming out anywhere. Most that is coming is thru the front vents. Even turned off it is still hot air coming in. No AC at all just hot.

Im going to try it in a few. Everyone says its my blend door. I have heat but no air, it was filled with freon and still no cold air at all. hopefully this step will point me in the right direction...Its gonna be hott here in Little Rock this summer.

So I did it, it gave a code 025. I turned it on then back off, then turned on the air cond again and guess what....I have air!!!! It said the blend door was intermittent?

Well I know eventually I will have to get a blend door but for me the self test last winter forced it to the heat sound and now as of this morning I used the self test to force it back to the ac side lol

Question for the 08 grand marquis lovers. My AC went out; I changed the blend door actuator & main control module. When I change the settings you can hear a click.. but no AC, no heat or cool. Almost like the blower motor isn’t going on. Any ideas? Any fuses to check? Again.. lol. I am getting error code 25 in the dash.

@@PanzerPlatform I asked this question to a few other videos. They also mention the resistor. This is soemthing I haven’t looked at tbh.. I’m getting any air at all.. no hot, no cold. No high, no low. After I replaced the control module last week. If I change the settings you do hear a click.. and a whistle coming out of the main A. control module for 1/2 a second.. then nothing happens. It sounds like soemthing whats to happen lol. Maybe that’s the compressor? The coolant line is cold but again no air. Only time I feel any air is at higher speeds , that engine heat coming out the top vent. After I replaced the blend door actuator that pretty much went away tho.

Where is the inside cabin air sensor located ? I couldn’t get accurate information on this.. my fancy electronic ac unit temp is stuck all year on 40 degrees and I Got code 41 with the self check but I have no idea how fix it or where it’s located because it’s preventing the automatic climate control from functioning properly

Right on Joe, Thanks for watching. I would check all fuses, and the wiring going to the EATC control head. If that didn't help, I think you can pick one up at your local junk yard for $20-$40. I have grand marquis 2008 and sometime the AC doesn't work, none of the controls working if i change to Floor nor Defrost working. Right on Habib, Thanks for watching. First, I do not recommend purchasing, or replacing any parts until a through diagnosis had been performed. However, based on what you've told me, (EATC will not enter self test mode), and my experience it sounds like the EATC Control Unit has an intermittent electrical malfunction. Unless you are a qualified electronics technician that can de-solder, and solder new components on the circuit board the only option is to replace the EATC Control Head. I would look at your local junk yard, or ebay for a "new" EATC Control Head. Let us know how you fix it. -Chuck

@@PanzerPlatform apparently, even the A/C compressor doesn't switch ON when I press on Max A/C nor any other button. 🤔 The A/C mechanic pointed me to an A/C switch valve which connects into a small black bottle located behind the radiator... Changed that, it worked for sometime and the moment i drove the car it shut off the compressor again. I'm worried if this is might be something else not even the EATC.. But anyway, im getting the EATC, just thought of letting you know what had happened today. Learning from your experience.

@@TheHabibalby I had a feeling this might happen. That's why I said at the begining, I don't recommend purchasing, or replacing parts until a thorough diagnosis has been performed. It sounds like you need an A/C performance system test. You'll need a manifold gauge set to check low, and high side pressures. I recommend you take it to a qualified, licensed repair facility.

2006 Mercury Grand Marquis. I have run the test a few times and it gives no error code but still blows heat. Very disappointing. I had this issue with a 2001 MGM and it costed about $1000 to tear up the dash. I have a feeling I'm screwed again with this issue. I hear no sounds, no door banging like the other car. Rather silent but nothing changes, just hot air. Why is it, it never gets stuck on cold!!

@@PanzerPlatform I just tried your Fix#1 again exactly as you did it. Bought one of those clips, waited 5 minutes. The only difference was, it returned to blowing air the same temp as the Vent. It was not hot but not cold. I also pressed the buttons high ac, norm ac, defrost, floor, both floor/defrost and they all seem to work correctly. I don't know, maybe it just needs Freon? Wishful thinking huh :)

@@PNFLnetwork Hmmm, try this; Turn the key on, but do not start the engine. Adjust the HVAC fan speed to the lowest position. Go to the passenger side front seat. Stick your head under the glovebox. Adjust the HVAC temp from full hot to full cold or full cold to full hot. You should hear the blend door acturator moving back & forth. Please come back and report what you hear, or don't hear. -Chuck

I’ve gotten past that point. Got a code 24 on my 06 mercury grand marquis. I called Napa to order a blend door actuator and the man said which one and that there where 3. My problem has been I have heat constantly blowing from defrost and feet I can’t adjust the temp either and in automatic mode it will once and a blue moon blow out of the vents that face you. I was able to get the ac to work several times by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. I assume the blend door actuator that needs replacing is the one behind the airbag and that I also might need to do o rings in the control unit as well but am not sure. Does a 06 grand marquis even have vacuum controls? Hope you can make sense of all I am saying.

@@waimeagavin808 Right on Gavin, Thank you for clarifying your issue, I 100% completely understand you. First off I never recommend purchasing, or replacing parts until a thorough diagnosis has been performed, and suspect parts have been proven to have malfunctioned. I do not support “parts shotgunning”. lol Based on what you’ve told me, and my personal experience with this issue your diagnosis is around 60% done. It sounds like you have a two separate issues; 1.) No control over the TEMPERATURE of the air flow. 2.) No control over the DIRECTION of the air flow through the vents, (feet, face, defrost). You may want to tackle the easiest issue first. The OEM Ford part number for the Temperature Control Blend Door Actuator for your ‘06 Grand Marquis with EATC is #YH1766. They’re around $45 on Amazon. I have a video on it’s replacement on my 2010 Grand Marquis with EATC. The procedure should be identical. You can see it here; kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWG5mKZ8mMmjmq8 - Moving on to the harder 2nd issue, (no control over direction of air flow). Most likely the O-Rings have malfunctioned. Here is a good video on how to replace them; kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYeoeGysZq2agaM - Before you go to the trouble of replacing them I would finish the rest of the 40% diagnosis. From my understanding all Panther Cars 1992-2011 (crown vic, grand marquis, lincoln town car) use vacuum controls for the HVAC system. You may have a ruptured, or leaking vacuum line between the EATC control head, and it’s actuators, vacuum tank, etc. You may want to test each line with a vacuum pump to check for leaks. It may take you a couple days, or weeks to complete these repairs. I request you keep us updated with your progress, or further questions. So anyone else who stumbles across this video may be helped. -Chuck

@@PanzerPlatform today I removed the airbag and vent to take a peek at the blend door actuator and in doing so I disconnected the battery to remove the airbag and reconnected it again. The actuator started working again and I could visibly see it move. Disconnecting the battery has been how I’ve gotten it to work in the past but it eventually stops working again. I am confused as to why this is happening. Also the error code 24 is gone now.

@@waimeagavin808 Correct. What you’re experiencing with the “intermittent “ issue with the Blend Door Actuator is exactly what I experienced in my car until it ultimately failed. There is a “dead spot” on the winding of the tiny DC motor inside the Actuator Housing. Depending on where you have the temperature adjusted when you shut the car off will determine if it will function the next time you start the car, and run the HVAC system. If it stops on that dead spot it will not move, and by performing a manual recalibration, (self test) gets it off the dead spot. Similar to tapping on a starter motor when it won’t start the engine, because the motor winding came to a rest on a dead spot. I explain it in further detail here; kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWG5mKZ8mMmjmq8 So, when it goes on the fritz, just perform a manual calibration, (self test) to get it off the dead spot to restore functionality. That should work, until it doesn’t, and that will mean the tiny dc motor is completely shorted out, and requires replacement. -Chuck

@@carlwinslow160 Diagnosis must come before repair. You should find out what is causing the problem before spending any money on parts. Otherwise you might be replacing good parts that are not malfunctioning, and still not fix the problem. -Chuck

Quick question, I ran this test and all is just as yours, so how do I know what’s wrong with my ac not blowing cold air, just hot..TIA

Hello, 1.) Start the engine, and turn on the A/C. 2.) Open the hood, and watch the A/C compressor clutch. 3.) Check to see if the A/C compressor clutch engages, and disengages every few minutes. After you do that come on back for the next step. -Chuck

Chuck, I did check and it’s not engaging, does it need to have Freon to engage? I thought I read something somewhere that without Freon it will NOT engage…

@@echoandcompany8989 Check fuses first. Next you need to check low / high side pressures with a manifold gauge set. You can barrow this tool for free from most parts stores like AutoZone. If the pressure is low, or their is no refrigerant in the system you need to check for leaks with a vacuum pump. You can also barrow this tool for free. You must repair the leak first before adding refrigerant to the system.

Yo Chevy, Thanks for watching. First check to make sure your engine coolant/antifreeze is at the correct level. Low on coolant, and there won't be enough to circulate through the heater core. Next check the error code definition in the description. Let us know how you get on. -Chuck

@@PanzerPlatform I took the battery out and pulled out the fuse. Now its going again! Before that I ordered the Blend door actuator from rockauto... Oh well 30bucks + got some other parts I needed for it and if it goes I can change it when I got it already.

@@ChevyBM Now hold on just a minute. I've never heard of this before. Exactly which fuse number did you pull? And did you pull it from the fuse box under the dashboard, or the fuse box under the hood? And keep us posted if it acts up again. -Chuck

@@PanzerPlatform I looked from the manual witch fuse is for the "ac" and pulled it out and put it back again (the fuse box under the dash). It must have reseted the ac somehow. I'll keep you informed if it goes haywire again!

@@ChevyBM Yo Chevy, That's terrific. Given that the HVAC control unit for your car is "electronic" doing this may have very well "fixed" it. Maybe the system performed a self diagnostic test on it self, and failed, and then disabled the affected blend door motor to prevent any damage. And when you disconnected the battery, and the fuse, that cleared the memory of any stored failed tests. And then when you reconnected the battery, and fuse the HVAC unit performed a calibration sweep of all the blend door, and mode door actuators, and it passed the self diagnostic test. And thank you for keeping us updated. If anybody else with this issue comes across this comment it may help them, and save them some frustration, and money. -Chuck

@@PanzerPlatform down in Houston the weather it’s crazy in the morning it’s cold so I put the heater on in the afternoon it’s hot so I try to put the ac on but it seems to blow hot air even tho it shows that it’s on 60 ac max
