I had a 1984 Sunburst red XR3i back in the day with a Janspeed 4-2-1 manifold and full exhaust system and a K+N air filter and a slick 50 treated engine, and boy did the little car fly!. 120bhp doesn't sound much nowadays but it was enough to give my car a stunning turn of speed for a 1.6. 50-70 in only 4.2 seconds in third gear made it an overtaking weapon and all the pops and bangs on trailing throttle gave it a soundtrack to match. The XR3i was a stiff firm riding car with lift off snap oversteer in the wet if you fitted budget rubber and was never meant to be as refined as a Golf GTi. It was a working man's racer. A truly underrated car even today and it is lovely to see this example looking so fresh and well maintained. I hope whoever buys it has as much fun in it as I had in mine. 👍

This is a nice clean car, which is rare these days. Various comments re the sunroof… I don’t like it either but bear in mind that this was a popular accessory back then. As the whole car is in such good condition I could live with the sunroof. The steering wheel is wrong though, should be the three spoke and the XR3i decals on the wings are not original.

I had a black XR3 back in 1987 and loved it. I had the chance to trade it in for a mark 4 XR3i or a mark 2 RS2000. I chose the XR3i and regretted it. The mark 4 escort was worse than the mark 3. I should have traded my XR3 for the RS2000 when I got the chance, a decision I regretted ever since. Nowadays I couldn’t afford either the XR3 or XR3i let alone a mark 2 RS2000.

SHAME ABOUT THE AFTER MARKET SUNROOF....MAKES IT WORTHLESS...IM AFRAID..ALSO SHOULD NOT HAVE THE SIDE MOULDING OR THE 3i DECAL..

As far as my memory goes, this looks pretty much exactly like mine. That had the side mouldings and sticker.

no..dig deeper into your memory,the side moulding was not factory..it was on some ghias along with some black stripes and gl models but not the 3i..early neither did examples of the 3i have the nibble glass holders on top of the spotlights as it messed up the style of the spotlight itself.also dont forget this was the era of the vinyl graphic they got slung all over cars..find me a picture in or on any ford magazine/press release of a 3i wearing this graphic..fortunately those issues can be addressed but unfortunately the aftermarket sunshine roof cannot..is there anything else you would like to know about xr3 xr3is?

abit much to call it worthless. Not everyone that buys these is a Ford anorak that memorises part numbers, some people just like the look of a car. Besides a rust free Escort is basically a unicorn.
