FordTechMakuloco are there any videos on PCV lines replacement on older 2 valve 5.4 motors? I’m having a tough time with that elbow hose at the base of the rear intake manifold, it’s an expedition so the firewall makes it extremely tough to get back there and release hose clamp to pull off? Do you guys pull throttle body off to gain more access? Thanks bud.

Definitely check the foam on the air filter box. I have a 2005 expedition 5.4 that wasn't pulling any codes (at least not to the point of tripping the check engine light), but I was getting atrocious gas mileage, as well as a drastic issue with power at times. When I would floor it, I would get almost bursts of power between bogged down acceleration. I also had the obnoxious diesel sound once warm at idle. I found that issue, cleaned off all old foam, and replaced with new padding. It solved all my issues, including (somehow) quieting down the engine.

I have checked everything and can’t find it a leak yet when cold on medium to full throttle acceleration, it does backfire so I know there is an issue. The only thing that hasn’t been replaced on this truck is the ECM.

I went through H*LL trying to fix my lean codes on my 2005 3V 5.4L F-150...Isolated every vacuum line, pulled the manifold to check for cracks, replaced MAF, replaced fuel pump and then Fuel Pressure Sensor. Went to 2 Ford dealerships and a diagnostic shop. Last shop says everything checks out and I had to think outside the box. They even replaced the computer at no charge when it didn't fix the problem.. I had a scanner that showed the fuel trims and knew they were off. Also took into account the problems with the 05 injectors. I went one size up and replaced ALL the injectors. That solved the problem. Trims went to the Rich side but within spec. Hope I'm not just masking a problem. Been 2 years, no problem

Perfect Video and Perfect Timing! Bruddah as always - You and Your Videos Rock !! Got a couple important questions for you. 1. How reliable are the "Re-man'd sensors"? And... 2. What companies would you recommend if we can't buy from OEM? 3. Which companies have you steered away from? I have yet to hear any good things about Dorman electronics and of course their "exact fit parts" are already #1 on the Top 10 Don't Buy charts - unless you really, really have too. Even then -- "Buyer Beware". The wife's 2007 toyota Camry has been giving us issues lately. Her XLT Camry was bought new in summer of 2007 and has been a trouble free car from day one. Now at over 100,000 miles it's asking for some normal and expected detailed, in-depth and attentive TLC. And she'll get it. Great Car. Last week I was getting the same codes you spoke of in the video wrt the fuel trims and DTC's. Wife came home from work saying the "Check Engine is On". Using your past videos as a guide and my scan tool combined with my very limited skill sets - I was able to fix all of the issues by simply cleaning the MAF, the throttle plate and the K&N flat air filter. Bruddah - I can say this - All is well in the islands. Happy Wife - Happy life and it's real time proof to the wife that (pounding my chest like Hercules) "Man needs to buy more tools!!" -- "Honey, buying that $400 scan tool just saved us a lot of money" and "this tool just paid for itself!" (cough - cough - ah - emm, honest it does ;)) Once Again Your Videos let me fix it right and saved us a boatload of money by not having to spend on things I didn't need to buy. Not to mention that I am able to better Interpret, Understand, and Utilize my scan tool. I was really worried that I'd have to buy a new MAF and/or TBS. That would of easily cost me over $500. Toyota over here wants $198 for the MAF and a new Throttle Body (sensor included) is over $300. The TPS sensor isn't sold separately over here. I went to a friend who works at a Toyota dealership in the parts department and said the same thing "sorry bruddah - You have to buy the whole Throttle Body assembly". They said it's because of the TPS and Body design. I Say - I smell a wolf in the hen house as I cough "Rip Off" out loud. Any Howz -- Thanks Again Bruddah!!

@xcataclysmx I don't know if the man here himself knows or has ran into this... After days and days There is a very big difference in those spark plug numbers. I will say I discovered and I will also say that in the back of the intake where it meets the heads. We're leaking ever, so slightly. You could not notice a misfire, didn't really have any symptoms that you would think? Nothing like the brake cleaner trick. Nothing like that would work. Nothing made sense. Put a smoke machine on it. Nothing and then I got the idea well. Let's pressurize the smoke a little bit and then the smoke started rolling out of the back of the intake gaskets on both sides. It was slightly leaking and that was causing so many problems

I have the same year truck with the same motor. Today when leaving the hardware store it started making a strange intermittent clunking noise coming from either the engine or the front wheel area. I thought for sure it was something serious with the engine. The check engine light came on and code 174 and 171 were discovered later. I decided to try to drive it home 6 miles on the highway. Once I got up past 25 miles an hour there was no more clunking and the engine seemed to run fine. As soon as I got near my house and reduced speed to around 20 miles an hour the clunking resumed. It almost sounded like the four-wheel drive was attempting to engage. I got it to the garage and clean the mass air flow sensor and took it for a test drive. The clunking remained present at low speeds. When I purchased the truck which has 220,000 miles on it there was a check engine light on but after changing the oil and adding some Lucas it went away. The previous owner thought the vehicle jumped time but it ran fine for me although the codes at the time did seem to indicate an issue with the cam phasers or the timing chain. I'm wondering if the timing chain or the slack adjusters have finally worn too far? Oddly however at highway speeds it ran fine. It wasn't just a rough idle at lower speeds it was definitely clunking intermittently. I'm going to further check the vacuum lines but it sounds mechanical. Any advice?

Your videos are really outstanding. i never paid any attention to the bottom of the air filter as you described in your video so I inspected mine. Guess what mine was all falling apart as you have shown in the video so I order the tray seal. Upon receiving the seal the exact measurement of the seal width is 1 1/4 inches and the old foam was 1 inch so it had to be trimmed off to the exact width as needed. However the seal really sticks onto the housing just wanted to give a heads up so others will know what to expect. Although I don't have any error codes yet just trying to eliminate them before they occur. I am a firm believer of preventive maintenance. Can you tell us what the part numbers for the two hoses you described in your video in reference to the vapor feed hose and the brake booster hose to the bottom of the intake. I would like to replace both of them now before I have a problem. Many thanks, IMHO your the best videos out there.

Here is one more oddity to add to the diagnosis. After spending hours checking for vacuum leaks including smoke testing the entire system my mechanic could not find a leak. So he decided to check the fuel pressure and discovered it was barely in the acceptable range. This is on a 2002 F150 Harley Davidson Edition with 98K miles. So, the codes were being dropped for a low fuel condition that would look just like too much air to the computer. Weird right? He said he had only seen this two other times. Once on his F150 Lightning and once on another standard F150 with 5.4L. Solution was to replace the in-tank dual fuel pumps and all the accessories. Way to go Jason!

Would have been cool to see the test drive with the new MAF sensor. That way we could see the fuel trims at higher RPM's. Great video regardless. Very informative and helpful. Checked my filter door seal and it was completely gone. Giant gap for air to enter housing. Seams like the filter seal would stop that from vortexing the MAF sensor area, but I trust your expertise over mine. I think I will try duck tape first, if that works I'll be looking for that air filter door seal. If you know where to get one, let me know. The vortex in the air filter housing was good info. Are there other seals on that housing I should check? Can't tell unless I take it all apart. Didn't want to fix what isn't broken, even though I do that sometimes anyways. Great info, thanks for the tip lesson.

My first thought was that the lean code was set after a harsh stop...only that is when an engine would be rich. I'm just curious, am I missing something here?

Hey boss my 08 expedition is straight piped and rear o2 sensors are not working...scanners only pulling up those sensors...when I'm doing 35 45 let off pedal and give it gas it jerks or misfires any clue?

I also have the 5.4L 3v and I checked my seal on my air filter door, after watching this video, and my seal is completely gone. What do you recommend to fix the door seal? I imagine they don't sell that seal at the auto parts store. Do we make one? If so, what material is best to use for the new seal? What thickness? Do you think this vortex could cause severe lean condition and rough idle and driveability issues?

When you say disconnect the battery do you actually mean to disconnect both positive and negative cables for ten minutes or so? Or if we don't have a scan tool that can reset KAM, is doing a KAM reset using your KAM reset procedure enough?
@FordTechMakuloco7 жыл бұрын
Just pulling the negative is good enough. Much easier for me to do a KAM reset with the scan tool but both accomplish the same task.

Hi Brian, you mention fuel quality. Any thought on why I'd start getting P174's shortly after a fill up? Coincidence?

Can’t believe I’m asking this……where/how do you find replace vacuum lines/tubes for 5.4L 3v? Would think it would be easy to find kit(s), but unless you do this by simply buying off the shelf emission hose at any parts store, I can’t find what should be any easy find. Pardon my being so brain dead, but much appreciated if any help…..

Any chance you could provide a link to where I can buy the vacuum hose elbow with the clamps that you showed in this video? And thank you so much for your videos. Just finished the timing job and oil pump replacement and I could not have done it without your excellent 4-part series. I’ve been watching so many of your videos lately that my wife is starting to get jealous...

Brian, did you ever see smoke, during a smoke test, on an older 5.4 come out of the dime-sized metal cap on top of the I.A.C. ? I did, on my 98 F150. killer part was,,it was a new, after-market I. A. C. pays to go Motorcraft.

I keep getting lean codes on my 2006 F150 5.4L on mainly bank 1 but sometimes on bank 2. I have smoke tested Vacuum system and no leaks found. LTFT bank 1 idling is around 15% . exhaust smells rich to me also received O2s11 code once but hasn't came back. truck will intermittently mis and loose power on highway. Just not sure if I should replace 02 sensors again as I changed them all about 15k miles ago.

Do you have a video on rich codes on both banks?? 07 navigator L is throwing a 1719 and stayin in first gear at times when cel is on, goes away after being cleared. changed the fuel pump, injectors, maf sensor, 02 sensors, coils, evap canister, ecu update, and cam position sensor (code came up once), no fuel pressure regulator on rail to change, starting to think its the throttle body?...truck is driving me loco... p.s - when the truck has cleared codes its runs and drives flawlessly...big fan of your videos, any help would be great!

Any thing different for the two valve ? I have a 2001 and have had trouble with both lean bank codes and recently experienced a rough idol and rpms bouncing and occasionally wants to die at a stop

Thanks for this video. The Vapor line at minute 2:00 on my 05 Navigator is really brittle, and flattens ( collapses) when the engine is started. I'm having a hard time finding a replacement that looks the same. Is this just a run of the mill vacuum hose, or is it a specific part. If it just regular hose, any idea what size it is? 3/8th inch? Thanks for your videos!
@traviskeffer99225 жыл бұрын
I had the same issue and asked myself the same question because the line is different. But I used regular hose. Because I couldn’t find that style hose and it fixed the issue. So regular hose is fine.

Having a tough go with a 4.6l 3v lean codes the maf is clean and reads zero. Would you replace the o2 sensors and maf. Or is something else. I've replace evap hoses Just not sure what is
@nealcoppola99637 жыл бұрын
Do the Newer MAF update the Baro the same way the Old one's Did ? You had to operate at WOT a few times before Baro would update. If I remember Correctly PCM only Looked at Baro at Start Up and a WOT event. If no WOT-- PCM operated at Baro reading for entire time engine was running. Baro was Altitude Compension Input to PCM. Is that still True ?

Would this cause high idle when the truck is in park? My rpm’s are at 1,100 in park I would assume that is a vacuum leak

Do you have A video of 4.6 two valve what are causes of lean code & vacuum leaks? I have A 06 f-150 stx 4.6
