@@MissGoElectric hey, while I have your attention, do EV owners comment about vehicle weights? The EV's are much heavier than comparable ICE's and I'm curious if consumers know or care? Certainly engineers care as the loads are higher and lightweighting is more challenging.
@MissGoElectric2 жыл бұрын
@@andrewhalonen5241 We work with many of manufacturers on product launch campaigns (mostly EV) when we aren't producing content for this channel or on Instagram. Through that work we have personally interacted with a couple hundred thousand prospective EV buyers. In our view, most commodity car buyers don't consider vehicle weight. If anything, we've noticed that most consumers feel safer being on the favorable side of a collision with another vehicle due to Newton's second law. The weight can also be helpful with traction in wintery conditions. Of course, the polar moment of inertia isn't top of mind for everyone, but the location of that mass has some safety advantages, too. Negative effects of extra EV mass is commonly amplified by low rolling resistance tires which might present deceleration and handling concerns for physics-minded buyers. Performance buyers who drive on track tend to be aware of EV weight. It is valid reason many of those buyers haven't gone electric yet. Until the recent supply-chain trouble began driving many EV makers back to heavier LFP chemistry, it looked like production battery pack weight was dropping fairly quickly. It will be a long journey towards power-to-weight-ration parity is achieved in most form factors. What are your thoughts?
@andrewhalonen52412 жыл бұрын
@@MissGoElectric I'm not surprised that consumers are largely unaware, yet I also wonder if the driving experience is superior for most people who drive commodity cars/SUVs/crossovers? I drove a Tesla 3 once, and it was quick & quiet compared to my vehicles (I also liked regen braking). So, I wonder if the power-to-weight ratio is superior to commodity ICE's, and that is sufficient to satisfy most people? I asked because I study vehicle lightweighting. I don't foresee emphasis (IE OEMs willing to pay substantial premium) to cut weight, yet hopefully we see an emphasis to cut costs. Thank you for sharing.

That's why Silverado EV is coming next year and redesign Lightning in 2025 on TE1 platform. This is a modified F-150 platform where GM Silverado EV BT1 is a EV from ground up next year. Wait for Ford 2025 redesign. The Ford F-150 Lightning is already being promised a redesign for the 2025 model year. Reuters mentioned this when discussing Ford’s production plans for the Lightning.

We talked about another purpose built electric truck to be manufactured in Tennessee in our F150 Lightning Launch VLOG video and on Twitter. We have not verified if it will be an F-series vehicle. We know it has been in development for two years and will feature radical design and aerodynamic elements.

Having a career in manufacturing/ quality, this appears as low volume or soft ramp up in production. I will say that the base model, or Pro as Ford calls it, is currently a bargain in the present EV world. The coming GM Silverado EV @ near 40k should be so too. The Cyber truck doesn't stand a chance at this price point for performance.

The unrivaled scale of F150 production is a major advantage keeping the costs down for F150 Lightning.

It looks like Ford took a regular ICE version of the F150, removed the engine, transmission, drivetrain and associated parts and replaced them with electric motors and battery. Not a bad way to quickly get out an EV version, but probably not optimized for an EV. It would be interesting to know whether anything in the cab or bed differs between the EV and Lightning versions of the F150.
@MissGoElectric2 жыл бұрын
This is largely an upfit and Ford has developed a different all electric pickup truck which is more efficient. We recently learned from Jim Farley (Ford CEO) that it is scheduled to go into production in Tennessee by 2025. Subscribe to this channel for updates on that one.

GUY - FUD Lightweight is using an outdated body on frame, it does thankfully have 4 wheel independent suspension, but no Active Air suspension STANDARD. the only thing going for the Lightweight is it can use standard F150 accessories. but, it's still too slow , too heavy, inefficient.
@josephhobbs47542 жыл бұрын
Interesting how well this stacks up to the Rivian and Hummer/Silverado EVs. It seems like body on frame should be heavier, but the Lightning is lighter than the Rivian by 200 lbs, lighter than the Hummer by over 2000 lbs. All three get close to the same range. Lightning can tow 2500 more pounds than the GM trucks. 1000 lbs less than the Rivian. Biggest difference between the two is Rivian does 0-60 in the 3 second range. Ford does it in 4.

Utilization of parts from the world's best selling automobile (F150) is a major manufacturing advantage Ford has. It is part of the reason this EV truck is so much more affordable than the others available.

@@MissGoElectric Or an unwillingness to change the way things have "always" been done. Sandy Munroe has said that this is the problem with legacy auto makers like Ford and even cites that as a reason he left Ford. Repurposing the ICE F150 chassis/frame, instead of designing a purpose built one, is not a good sign. Sandy has been calling for manufacturers to cast their chassis/frames for decades.
