That starter sound will forever be imprinted in my brain, I used to have a neighbor who owned a 90 model with a 7.3, with bad glow plugs, every morning like clockwork at 5:30, he would spend at least a minute or so cranking that thing over surprisingly he didn't wear out the starter, that was always my alarm in the morning it was great!

Reminds me of how my old 2000 used to be. Crank crank crank and then crank some more before it would finally decide it wanted to start.. But once it started up there was no stopping it. I miss both my old 7.3s just because of how tough and reliable they both were let alone all the other perks

Do you have glow plugs & if so it will be a good idea to use them my friend! Or you have a problem somewhere in the glow plug system & best you get it rectified sooner rather than later! You're supposed to continue cranking a diesel engine until it fires up! By the way revving a cold diesel engine hard like that after it started will NOT do it any good in anyway shape or form!
@ThumperJunkie3 жыл бұрын
So I also own one of these trucks with the same engine and the thing is: If he has the stock glow plug controller it kinda just cycles the glow plugs and the only real way to force the plugs to stay on is to cycle the ignition again. If he were to continue trying to crank it this engine probably wouldn't fire. The stock starter really isn't built to do long cranks and will start to overheat and the engine very likely will not fire up. Unless the glow plugs have warmed the cylinder enough the IDI really doesn't want to start. The rev really isn't that high for these engines, in really cold weather I've found that I have to give it a quick rev for the high idle to work. The second rev did seem a bit excessive but the first one probably was required to get it to idle properly. If you listen you'll notice the idle increases after the first rev.

@machineryway62193 жыл бұрын
Diesels get better mileage/efficiency (up to 40%) than gas engines. It's mainly because of higher compression ratio and lack of intake butterfly ''valve''. And ofc diesels are torque monsters ;)

Same route with additional 2700lbs load (9300lbs combined) average 7.85mpg. 5500lbs load in truck bed (not in trailer) is max I'm comfortable with, but I'm not sure what mileage it gets with that kind of load. @@arberfilms5998 again, gas engine starts better in cold conditions. But yes, this was kinda sluggish start even for a diesel because glow plugs were out of service. I have used ether occasionally, but through air intake, not mixed in fuel.

@@machineryway6219 you should consider mixing ether in fuel next time. It might save you a starter motor.
