When it comes to sealing an engine, the gasket is the hardworking soldier that takes a tremendous amount of abuse but is typically never recognized for its effort. One of the most important gaskets that keep cylinder head hardware protected from the elements and keeps oil from escaping from your motor is the valve cover gasket. Most valve cover gaskets are made from plastic or cork and are used as a seal between the cylinder head and the valve cover itself.
Although the valve cover gasket is well protected from the top and bottom, it is very delicate and prone to damage from the sides. Over a period of time the gasket becomes brittle and will crack due to exposure to dirt, debris, heat and other elements. When this occurs, the gasket can lose its integrity and will leak, potentially causing cosmetic issues with leaking oil or reduced engine performance. If not replaced by mechanic in time, it can lead to complete engine failure.
There are a few common symptoms that will indicate a potential problem with a bad or failing valve cover gasket. If you recognize any of these warning signs, contact a mechanic as soon as possible so they can replace the valve cover gasket if needed.
1. Burning oil smell
2. Valve cover is dirty and leaking oil
3. Engine is low on oil
4. Engine is running rough and causing misfires

Good video. It is important to not overtighten the bolts though. It always better to use a torque wrench and I think the setting is about 9nm. Might be better to tighten the bolts in two stages, the 1st I would think should be tightened to about 5nm.

The Haynes Manual says no silicone on the gasket, and I've seen a number of forums suggest the same thing. Why are you putting silicone on the gasket?

I dont mean to sound stupid but i have a 2017 Ford Fiesta SE with 97,320 miles on it now and had 37,000 miles when i got it and I noticed a oily residue around the valve cover and the engine wants to hold back, is that a sign the gasket needs replaced?

Different size bolts cause for different tightening. A torque wrench gives you precise measurements in ftlb

We were told by a mechanic that if we are to change the valve cover gasket we need a program to relearn because of sensors attached to the engine. How true is this.?. Based on video we didn't see any scanning / programming happened. We are now confused. :-(

They lied. In general, when servicing requires you to unplug sensors, you should disconnect the negative battery cable first and connect it last. This will prevent any issues with computer modules.

working on a friend's car with similar oil leakage. makes it hard to diagnose because the same car also had a faulty oil cap, which sprayed oil on the topside of the engine. cannot stand these domestic economy cars, all terrible vehicles haha 40K miles, could you believe it? 😂
