Just cleaning throttle body regularly solved the surging problem on my Ford 500. My mechanic did so much work trying to fix surging Ford 500 (which broke the motor mounts) before we realized all we need is to clean the throttle body every six months. There is also a software patch we might try if it works well for everybody else. Ford dealer recommended replacing throttle body, never heard of Ford-500-11-8-520TSB20.pdf which has the software patch information. A lot of information seems to have been taken down (by Ford?) There was a Facebook page calling for a recall.

Thank you so much for suggesting Amazon for this part as I am on Amazon Prime. The local Ford dealer here was gonna stab me for almost $800.00 for this part alone plus 2 hrs of reprogramming of the throttle body. Total bill was over $1000.00. Too much! I will order the part tomorrow through Amazon and do this myself as I have done all my work to every car I've owned in the last 45 years. I paid close attention to the torque value for the bolts. Today I replaced the throttle body in my 06 Freestyle. All went without a hitch (yes I followed all of your instructions to a T). When I reconnected my battery the headlights came on & turned off quickly, but she started right up and the check engine light, which was on prior to this job, shut off immediately. I'm doing this job for my mom. this makes me love my old carburated mighty max slot more. the cost of this part is more expensive than my brand new carburater and my fuel pump was only 50. these new cars are money puts $200 for each injector that's $1200, $400 throtle body and that's not including a fuel pump

I have an 05 Ford Five Hundred. The vehicle use to intermittently misfire and also buck and go into fail safe mode. At that time scan codes were P2544, P0316 and P0306. I replaced the plugs with Autolites and the # 6 coil. I then did the relearn procedure and it was still kicking out the same codes and misfiring.. or at least felt like it was misfiring. I then took it to a shop and had them run a diagnostic and re-flash the PCM and TCM as I had found a TSB reporting that the P2544 code required a re-flash if the vehicle was built before a certain date, which mine fell into that category. During their diagnostic they couldn't get it to replicate the issue. They then re-flashed the PCM/TCM and afterward they did a test drive and it kicked codes P2104 and P2111 and went into failsafe mode. They did some more diagnostics and recommended replacing throttle body unit and TB connector as they said when they "tapped on the TB sensor housing or wiggled the wires at the connection" it would show something on their tool. They gave me a copy of the graph from their diagnostic testing and showed me where the graph went wonki. I took the vehicle home, replaced the throttle body and spliced in a new pigtail connector to the TB. This didn't resolve the problem and was still kicking out the same codes P2111, P2104 and now P0306. The vehicle has 180K miles on it. I figured a major tune up was in order. I replaced all the injectors and coils, I also replaced the spark plugs with Motorcraft this time as I had read that Autolites weren't Ford friendly. I also replaced the EGR, PCV, fuel filter, air filter, intake gaskets. I cleaned the MAF sensor. I drove the vehicle for two days and it went into fail safe mode and kicked codes P2104 and P2111. Very frustrated at this point. I was told the maybe the TB was damaged during shipment as the TB position sensors are very sensitive. I replaced the TB again and also replace the accelerator pedal position sensor. This still did not resolve the issue. It is currently showing codes P2104, P2111 and P0306. Also, I will note that my vehicle's wire harness did not drape over this AC line and was completely clear of it with no signs of chafing. I have access to an Invova 3130 scan tool. What can I look at and monitor to see what might be causing this issue? I'm at my wit's end on this, any ideas on what are some other possible problems that I should consider? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, I have a quick question. I have a ford freestyle 2006 and it won't start, it cranks but won't start we had to call a mechanic they said it was the key but they checked and it wasn't then they said it was the spark plugs we changed them and it worked for only 2 weeks then it stopped then he went over again and now he showed us a code (OB II) and said it was the computer😰 It's very frustrating, do you have any idea? FordTechMakuloco Why are you not telling people to try cleaning the throttle body regularly? The new throttle body will fail to. Why are you not suggesting the software patch in Ford-500-11-8-520TSB20 which addresses this problem? There is a letter from ford to the owners of Ford 500's that should be mentioned concerning the surging problem.

do codes p2110 and p2107 have to be deleted after throttle body is replaced . I changed throttle bodies I tried to reset the computer but the wrench light is still on. it seems to be running better after a few mins but my gas petal is not working at all

@FordTechMakuloco ... ford500 running pretty damn good, no CELs. sometimes upon first start, idle will surge/drop to 500 RPM a couple times and then idle fine. Kinda seems like after the engine is fully warm. Idling seems to have occasional very very slight surge. TB has been replaced (I can tell from cooling line). Intake manifold has been done. What do you think ? Is this more of a fuel issue ??

Arya Mansoori Well it just depends on what the code is. I would get the codes read at auto zone first. There are two common issues for this and first I would say is the throttle body needs to be replaced as shown in the video. Second thing that is common is for the transmission speed sensors to fail causing this concern intermittently.

If clips not put on correctly, on Air Box, it will result in DIRTY AIR going into engine, like no air filter at all. It creates havoc for MAF ONLY when it gets all DIRTY, causing codes, misfires, etc. Always cover filter if you leave it in the open box, when servicing vehicle. Upper air box should not be put on dirty floor/table. Cover/plug it up. That's for CLEAN AIR ONLY. (air filter is used, I assume, by owner)

Whenever I'm driving the vehicle tends to kinda shut down and no matter how much I press the gas pedal it won't go until I shut off the vehicle completely and start it up again. Ok, I am getting what I initially thought was a rough shift at slow parking lot speeds with an initial light pressure on the pedal is applied after coasting. The tranny bogs down and it happens maybe once a month. Is this the throttle body? Is the issue the old style coolant throttle body or can it happen on a noncoolant TB too? Should I stay away from ebay used TBs or do you have suggestions on those? I was told by a dealer service manager my dad has had a relationship with for decades to not to use brake cleaner or carb cleaner on these new TBs because they take a coating that it takes off. That then causes other issues. Do you know of any cleaners that would not take the coating off and would clean it up? Is the dirty part the issue and if not what causes this issue? I have 158k miles and want to fix this cheap is there a way to do that with this Montego issue? The expensive route I have considered is a A1 Cardone remanned TB. Will that work or will that coating potentially be altered by A1 Cardone in the remanning process and not be good similar to how the dealer warned me? Any suggestions on an affordable fix would be great. thanks

My rpms run a little under 1000 rpms while in park. I have a 05 ford freestyle 3.0 liter and it runs terrible. There is no check engine light on and while in drive it has a little miss and it feels like its putting a strain on the transmission. I put new plugs and new coils and still no difference. Im wondering if I have a bad throttle body. Any suggestions?

I followed your instructions on cleaning/changing the throttle body and now the car runs great. Another problem, not long after i was driving the car to relearn the throttle body, the ABS and Trac control light lit up. Any way to get those lights to come off, I'm thinking this is due to the computer resetting. Help!

Really having trouble getting my ford started AGAIN after changing my throttle body...and when i did get it started i didn't have no type of acceleration to rev at all. Plus had changed the wires to the throttle body because the old one's where to exposed...but made sure all connections where correct and still no luck.... Asking you if i did something WRONG... Just got word that my 2nd alternator failure is due to a PCM issue. Can these be replaced used or aftermarket? Had a coilpac go bad , changed all plugs and rear 3,4,5 coilpacs and then alternator issue. Car was re-ended 2 weeks prior and had to have the alternator replaced so we could drive home. Charging system light came back on 150 miles up the road. now 2nd dealership saying PCM is bad...

I took my 06 Five Hundred to the dealership earlier this week. The wrench icon had come on & the car decelerated while i was driving on the road. The mechanic ran a diagnostic check on the car & he found out that the wire for the throttle control was on the AC unit, it had gotten hot, frayed & burned throught the wire casing. He said that the wires were touching & this was the cause of the vehicle slowing down. I was told that i could go in myself & apply electrical tape on it to temporarily fix it until i can get it into a shop to fix permanently. Is this possible, and if so, how do i get to the wire myself to fix it?

I know you might or might not have the money but you are better off buying a smack brand new throttle body,I have a 2006 Mercury Montego And It's the Same as a Ford Five Hundred(500),Its in the shop right now getting a throttle replacement, and the throttle was original,But like i said buy a brand new one,cause your better off with it and it will last you a whole lot longer than the used ones

We put the old throttle body back on(it was working, though the car had cut off on me a few times thats why we were replacing it) and it does the same thing. No gas hovering around 500-900 rpms.

***** Try cleaning it with a six dollar can of throttle body cleaner, an old toothbrush using a how to video on you tube. We held off on doing the software patch until we see how it works for everyone else. I don't trust Ford anymore. They did finally send us a letter offering to do something, but the regular cleaning of the throttle body does the trick in our mild climate. We plan to clean it every year or two....maybe every 20,000 miles. Seriously I know zero about cars and I can do it. There might be some sort of cover-up at Ford. I was asked to be a witness in a lawsuit but the plaintiff died and case was dropped.

i have a 2006 ford five hundred. When it is cold outside, the car will not hardly accelerate unless I put the pedal all the way down to the bottom, then it finally opens all the way. When i am at highway speed, the car acts like it is in a lower gear combination with the rpm's up almost 500-1000 rpms higher than usual (the tranny is a CVT). If i put the car on cruise control on the highway, then the car acts pretty normal and smooth acceleration up hills. Would you consider this a TB problem still or could it be the pedal position sensor? I did have one instance where it did throw a code and just coasted. I pulled over, turned the engine off, and then restarted the car, and it cleared the error and was driving normal again until I parked it. You had mentioned in one of your videos that you might be able to buy the TPS part of the TB. I have not had any luck with searching for just the TPS. Would you happen to know where to buy them?

+z2830than This does sounds like a throttle body yes. I have a video on a Five Hundered where it exhibits almost the same concerns you are reporting. It would have been best to get that code that set though. I know you are showing the use of a scantool for logging the position data, but what is your take on testing the TPS by checking the voltage output by manually moving the blades and seeing the results on a multimeter? I know it isnt the same as driving and logging, but wouldnt the erratic voltage values show up by moving the blades slowly back and forth?

That would only show a voltage change you would not be able to see it is erratic plus if you had no tps input from either track it would set a P2135

***** Yes the 3k max in park is normal, if the converter was plugged you would have a check engine light and very low power. The intake must be removed to do plugs and such but is not as bad as it looks really.

my ford oem carlite window was crack from the cold had to get a new one a oem pilkington windshield they came and put it in ever since then i notice the passenger side wiper goes above the black when they come down to a rest at the bottom right which does not look normal which i notice the wipers would start off fast then slow down on high speed i google and seen to check relays or the windshield linkage should replace please help cause i have no clue cause it stops right where the clear glass meets the black bottom of the glass at the bottom so it looks every other windshield the peoples wipers are below the glass i even took the arm off and offset to be more below but still stops in same spot above black almost looks like its running out of juice

When you pull off the wiper arm cycle the wipers and turn them off then set the wiper height.

Luis Barrera Yeah I would look into this throttle body as the source of your failure this is how they get once they have fully failed.

I hear you say " not available at aftermarket shops" a lot in regards to the ford scantool. I have news for you more shop owners I know own and operate a IDS subscription then do not. Not to take away from what your doing guy but I know that at my shop were tooled up for certain makes at the same level a OE dealership is.

Bryan Codoluto Agreed a few shops around here have the tool also but it seems more shop owners do not want to pay for the subscription it seems. Either way the point is to take it somewhere with this scan tool software setup to get that extra little information to make the diagnosis more accurate.

I found this Ford bulletin on a Five Hundred forum. Please let me know if you think this will do the trick. This may be due to sludge buildup in the electronic throttle body (ETB). ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. 2. Follow Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-04 to remove the throttle body from the vehicle. 3. Steve busch i replaced new fuel regulator couple months back came find out after all testing never my dude buy ebay fuel regulator that was whole problem got new good brand from napa problem solved if u have good brand fuel regulator then i would start looki g at ur cam sensors or crank sensors good luck kid probably no spark pull plug wire see got spark stick screw driver end wire have somebody crank for u u hold wire ark against motor anything against engine good luck kid let me know how went less u already figured it out .
