I regularly drive a 1.6 petrol powershift focus titanium spec and these are my 2 cents: -Car is impressive around corners and has very little body roll -The cabin is very well insulated -Suspension is a bit harsh even on 16 inch wheels -Rear seats are very firm and uncomfortable for long journeys. Front seats are ok and have good lateral support -the dash board layout is very confusing and unintuitive -Boot size is not as good as other rivals (as stated in the review) -Avoid the powershift at ALL costs. This has to be by far the worst dual clutch transmission ever made.

I test drove a 2005 Focus yesterday. 5 speed manual, 2.0 liter enigne. The handling, acceleration , and ride were fantastic. I had no preconcpetions for the car and was absolutely shocked at what a fun car it is to drive. I really did not expect that. I didnt expect its performance and acceleration to be so good. I've stopped looking at other makes and models now because I just fell in love with the Focus. The only downside to the one I test drove was it had 275K km's on it, but it still ran like a scalded dog. The price was low because the K's were high, though. I'm still considering it, but in the meantime I'm trying to find one with less than 200,000 km's even if the price is a little higher, and there are plenty around with an average of 168K kms to 195K km's.

I totally see what you guys mean. I'm American and every time I turn around there's another Chevrolet Tahoe or Ford Mustang. When I was in England, it felt as though I had moved about 20 years ahead in motoring and economy. I mean, all I want for my first car is a Honda Civic Si; Sporty, economical, comfortable, and all while keeping the ice caps from melting. But the only reason we don't use diesel as much in smaller cars is because it's much more expensive here than gas (petrol).

I previously owned the Focus before this model, the Mark 2. It was a great car with ample space inside, I kept it for 6 years. I recently went on a 300 mile trip in a friend's car as a passenger in this new model Focus tested here. It was nothing like my old Focus. It is very cramped inside in front and rear, the roof has been lowered to make the car look visually sportier and I found getting out the rear of it akin to being a contortionist, I'm 5-11 tall but I found I had to bend longways and dip my head under the upper door frame to lever myself out like a belly dancer. On the way home I sat in the front. The front seats are bucket shaped and were clearly made for either a dwarf or a 7 stone woman. The footwells are big enough to sit with your knees only about 6 inches apart. This car in fact reminded me of a 1975 Fiat 126 inside where the car is actually sprayed onto you and looks like a metal jacket. If you are thinking about buying one of these and are over 5'-9" tall and not skinny, I seriously recommend a long test drive and several entries in and out the car to see how it feels, to me it felt like being driven in a can of sardines or one of those fairground dodgem cars. This new model does look better from the outside than the Mark 2, but at a high cost of space lost.

I agree with you 100%, live in the US and work for a Ford dealer. The only diesel we offer are in big heavy duty trucks. If Ford offered a diesel in the focus and fiesta, the hybrid technology would be killed. What type of gas mileage do cars with diesels get in the UK? I have talked to Ford people and they are planning of bringing diesel cars over, but I truly think it will never happen. :(

I just tested the US version of the focus titanium sedan recently. The steering wheel looks allot bigger in this video than it actually is. Does the European version not have MyFord touch with sync? Personally I thought it was the coolest feature of the whole car. You can control climate, radio, phone, iPod, navigation, and satellite radio by voice commands. The European version offers features that the US version does not have. Like auto start stop, sign recognition, and diesel engine.

Ford is working on that, one of Fords 4 main improvements is 'drive green' and so even the new Explorer is fuel efficient. There are many cars that the U.S have that Europe doesn't, like the Explorer which would do well in the U.K and maybe the Taurus SHO.

What's the build quality like, I've seen a few of these new Fords and it doesn't seem to take long for them to start looking a bit worse for wear, obviously a lot of it depends on how the owners treat them but I've seen a 18 month old Focus with badges beginning to fall off and panel gaps so inconsistent they would put an old Leyland bus to shame, my grandfather always uses the philosophy of "if Ford can't make a good car then nobody can" but I find they go for driving ability instead of quality

Also, look at what 16 year old American teens get for their first car and look at what 17 year old Brits get. 16 year old Americans get V6 engined gas suckers or Earth killing hundreds of CO2 emission cars. A 7 door convertible with upside down seats? Its a hatchback, there's only so little you can do to distinguish the cars. And yes, again, There is a big difference between Astra and Focus since they dont have a single detail or line that similar on their body. If you want a different car buy Citroen DS4.
