Ford Focus Mk2: How to clean the throttle body | 1.6 petrol

Hi Rob I don’t suppose you know where to find the EGR valve on that model of focus?

Hey! Not a job I've done myself - there is no EGR on the1.6 petrol, only the diesel engines. But you should be able to find it at the back of the engine, it's fairly accessible but you need a special Clic-R clip release tool for the clamp on the pipework to the left of the valve.

I did move it gently with a soft cloth as I was cleaning it. I know you're not supposed to but I did it very slowly and carefully, and it's fine.

@@RobGMyMX5 Thanks for answering my focus is jerking back and forth at low throttle imput and i can feel a slight miss at idle when i accelerate hard its excellent also when i release the throttle its hesitating its really annoying i changed the ignition system but its still there 😕..

@@nikosgreekman8812 Sounds similar to the issues I've had. I changed the MAP sensor and it seems a bit better now. I also cleaned the PCV valve which is just behind the throttle body, it just pulls out and you can clean it with some throttle body cleaner

I did it the way it was in the video. But the engine doesn't starts. The butterfly valve doesn't opens

Try and see if you can reset again - 1. disconnect battery 2. unplug the electrical connector to the throttle body 3. Leave for about 30 mins 4. Reconnect electrical connector to throttle body 5. Reconnect battery 6. Turn ignition to on (but don't start!) 7. Wait for 15 seconds 8. Turn ignition off, then try to start.

​@@Batka198503 Yes. After ignition I had to hold the throttle pedal for 1-2 minutes. ( in order to keep the valve open) Then the Control unit started the self learning procedure.

You don't need to remove it. Simply disconnecting the negative terminal is enough.

Yep just disconnecting is fine, but definitely needs to be done otherwise the ECU won't reset the throttle afterwards

@@RobGMyMX5 Another question: Some can clean it with a toothbrush without removing the throttle body. If I prefer to do it this way, I don't need to remove the battery? They mention not pushing the valve open manually if it's electronically operated, which could damage it. Instead, turn the ignition to power on (don't start the engine), then brace the accelerator pedal hard down inside the car to open the valve. How I know mine is electronically operated or not?

@@jeroendenny6430 All mk2 Focus have an electronic throttle body, so this method will work. However, it will be difficult to clean both sides of the the butterfly valve properly with it still in place like this. You will still need to disconnect the battery afterwards for at least 15 mins or so, so that the ECU can recalibrate with the throttle body after it's been cleaned. Since it's relatively easy to take the throttle body out, I would recommend you take it right out so you can clean it properly

Im having a rough cold start idle too. Seems very common on the 1.6 petrol engine

Yes I think so. Mine is the opposite actually - smooth idle on first start but lumpy when up to temp. But I've stopped trying to find the cause now and have just accepted it's a quirk of the car. It runs perfectly other than that.

Sorry for the slow reply. I'm afraid I didn't note the exact size, but it was a standard size torx head - if you have a set of screwdrivers with the usual torx sizes, one of them should fit right

nice one, rough idling it might be a crankcase breather pvc valve.maybe a clean could sort this issue

@@dylanwalsh195 Good tip. I did actually check mine and the PCV valve, and both are fine. Gave the valve a clean while I had it out. Also changed the MAP sensor. Idle is better than it was now but still a little lumpy. At this stage I reckon it could be worn injectors, in which case don't think it's worth the expense to refurbish unless it gets really bad.

@RobGMyMX5 fair enough. I assume youve changed spark plugs and the ignition cables? Also where is that sensor is it on the right or left of the throttle body as it looks like theres two things on mine :/

@@dylanwalsh195 The MAP sensor is on the left side of the intake manifold, behind the throttle body - if you take off the intake hose you can see it quite clearly, it's held in with a single torx screw 🙂
