The idea of the Maverick competing with the Beetle was on price, economy, simplicity and space. It was an import fighter, not an import copy. The original Maverick sold for less than $2,000 which is why it sold better than the original Mustang. Baby Boomers were the main target for the sporty looking Maverick since there were so many potential buyers with little cash to spend. It was the right car at the right time. I saw Mavericks and Beetles everywhere when I was a kid. I also had toy Mavericks and model kits as a kid.

The Maverick was a replacement for the Falcon and was designed to compete with Chevy Nova, Chevy's replacement for the Falcon rival, Chevy II. To the extent Ford was moving forward with a compact import fighter, that car was the Pinto, and Chevy's counterpart was the Vega. In no way was Maverick ever intended to be a "VW Beetle."
@powerball13815 жыл бұрын
Ford actually killed off the Maverick because it was murdering the Mustang II in sales. This was because of the Grabber package, which packed more power than the Mustang and costed less. They ended up removing the Grabber package to save the Mustang. If they hadn't done that, the Mustang may have not lived to today, and us Ford guys might be worshiping the Maverick or the Probe or something like that.

What kind of classic muscle do you guys have? Heard about a lot of different muscle cars that weren’t sold here in the US.
@dimitrithomaz29155 жыл бұрын
We had the Dodge Dart too, including a front-end factory body kit that made it look somewhat similar to the Charger. Crazy times. Besides that, I don’t think there was any other muscle car sold in Brazil. Opel Commodores were a hit too (sold under the GM badge) but they only came with I6 engines. While miles ahead of the run of the mill basic I4 econoboxes, it couldn’t stand against V8s of the era.
@AlbusDandy5 жыл бұрын
brazilian muscle car is chevy opala (not impala) ford Maverick,one version of dodge charger(it's very similar to dodge dart) and dodge dart
@LuisEPGomes4 жыл бұрын
@@thefirebirdflock3440 There's almost none, the classics with v8 engines were the Maverick, the brazilian Dodge Charger and the Dodge Dart and some Ford Galaxies (with the Landau name). The Chevrolet Opala was only sold here with a 2.5 inline four and a 4.1 inline six, so not really a muscle car. There was almost none v8 cars for us, even rwd cars are few, our market is weird and there is no really fun car that you can buy under R$10000 like you guys have all this old cadillacs and chevy's with big block v8's. The Mavericks with the v8 engine are impossible to find under R$50000 and can go up to R$200000. Our market is really sad. Our happy spot is the Chevy Chevette, because it is a cheap rwd car, but besides that we just have VW Gol GTi's and the Opalas (and Opalas aren't cheap too).

Hi. I happened to come across this video when my 18 yr old teenage daughter asked me what had been my most favorite car that I had owned when I was her age. So to show her, i googled the car that I had once loved & had always regretted selling...my 1976 Black & Yellow Ford Maverick with the red picture of a horse on the sides. It was a unique one of a kind type of car, & I had the only one like it in town & most likely in our state. It was soo cool back then & I think still is. I've never seen another like it ever again. I was approached at that time & offered quite a bit of money for it & let myself be talked into selling it. I never should of sold it & have always regretted it. I would love to find my old Maverick again someday & get it back. I saw this video & watched it. It brought the biggest smile to my face remembering what it was like to drive that car. Your exactly right about everything u said about the car as u drive that Maverick. Loved the video. Thanks for the memories ❤

Just bought a 76 Maverick with only 28,700 original miles. I’m the second owner. It’s a time capsule. It was kept in a climate controlled basement since new and has zero rust. Has the original 200cid Straight 6 with the C4 Auto Transmission. The interior is black vinyl and in perfect condition. Car is Meadowlark Yellow and still looks like new paint. It’s amazing what keeping a car in a climate controlled basement will do. Building a 302, stroked to a 347, 750 Holley with long tube headers with flowmasters out behind the rear tires. Going with a Tremec TKX 5spd. Having a 9in Ford Rear End built for it. With a 5 speed I can run a 4:10 rear gear and still cruise highway speeds. Curb weight on this base model Maverick was only 2908lbs. That’s Foxbody range. A little 347 Stroker should make close to 500hp with the right Cam and ignition. I’m building this car just to race Foxbody’s with. With the right coilover shocks and some CalTracs on the leaf springs I will have a sleeper for sure.

Just like the Falcon which it replaced. Nice video. It brought back a lot of memories.

My bro bought a 71 maverick from my neighbor in 1986, Orange County ca. I got it in 1987. I was 15. It had 212,000 miles on it. I rebuilt every front end part, the rear end suspension, the rear end (2,78?), sounds like yours on shifting. So, after 212,000k miles I put headers, intake and cam/chain. Had the trans rebuilt and it rod knocked. I rebuilt it with my dad and it became really fun. Crashed a curb and the suspension, that already sucked, nocked it out of commission and sold it to some one in the mid west. I cried.

In 1988 I got my first car, a rusted out 1976 red Ford Maverick. It was a great first car. The Maverick sold so well because it was just a perfect and good plain car with no frills that many wanted for simple transportation, and was affordable at the time until Ford realized it was out selling the Mustang, so they raised the price. Very dependable and a conversation starter for sure. It hurt Mustang sales in 1970 because when equipped with the 302 it was faster (lighter)and was cheaper than a 302 Mustang. So the raised the Maverick price.

Got a story for ya!! Had a 70 6cyl 200 cid, trans went up, (C4) got a junkyd repl, a week later the eng blew!! (head gasket). A Friend found me 2 Mav's sitting... one a 6 cyl, one a V8 Grabber... but! The floors were gone in the Grabber. Man said his son was gonna take the driveline out and out & fit in the 6 banger car... got busy, never did it... told me for $200 bucks I could have whatever I wanted off either car!!!😜 I pretty much gutted the Grabber... entire driveline, Hood (w/ Scoops), deck lid w/ (spoiler), grille, 4 Keystone Classics wheels, 9" rear w/ 373 gears... traction bars, 2 buckets, floor shifter, What'd I not think of taking til it was too late? Front springs! Mine were 6 cyl springs, front end sagged awful w/ a V8 in it!! I used those cheesy spacers in the springs to lift it... 😑 BTW, the V8 wasn't a 302, it was a 351Windsor w/ a mid sized cam!! 🤩 Edelbrock alum intake, a Holley 650 on her... and boy did she run!! Blackjack headers... she was mean!!! NEVER got beat in that car... I was beating everything!! Never raced a Vette, tho... Funniest story was, going to the beach, O.C. MD... came to a light next to a brand new Monte Carlo, SS... (sticker still in the window)... he wanted to race! Morning after the prom, had his girl w/ him,😍 still in her dress, him in a Tux... He wanted to show off for her, by beating this old primered Maverick (which I'll surely beat!) he thought!😉 Dusted his ass from stop light to stop light, 3 times!! 😂As I'm waiting for him at the next red light... I could see him beating on his dashboard, arms flying around! He pulls up, all red-faced, puts his window down & says, whataya got in that thing??? I said back, a 4 barrel!! 😝 Took off, never saw him again!!! It was purr-fect!!! 🤣🤣🤣True story!!

I didnt own one, but I did own a 1978 Mercury Zephyr 2-dr notchback sedan, with Mustang GT Cobra shocks, springs, brakes, swaybars, and Cobra Turbine wheels. Car actually handled very well, and was a lot of fun to drive around.

After a lifetime of COOL cars , 1960 Impala SS, 1965 Impala SS, 1970 GTO drop top, she was saddled with a 1973 Maverick. She Hated it! She wrecked it and afterwards turned in her license. She Hated driving after experiencing the Maverick. Also,I can tell you that changing spark plugs on a 302 Maverick was an Absolute Nightmare! But I still loved them. They were kind of a sleeper, in 302 form that is.

My dad had a 1977 maverick grabber. In 1990 he took the engine out of a wrecked 88 mustang gt and dropped it in. Loved that car. It was rusted out and about 5 years ago we junked it and put that engine into a 92 ranger.

We obtain one of these, first model year. It was way back in the 90's and we swapped on a built Edelbrock 302 and 9" read from a donor 69 mustang. It was a tricky rocket but lots of fun... Eventually it was replaced with it's cousin, the Mercury Comet with the grabber hood.

I've got one, its got a 351w and the small bumpers. stilling looking for the grabber hood though. Mine handles way better than the one he's driving by the looks of it. And for a fun fact the only reason they stopped selling is because ford gouged the price due to out selling the mustangs.

Got to work on one when I worked at a classic car shop. Orange with orange interior. Neat little cars

I remember when they were new. Mavericks were great cars, and super light. My sister had one, her boyfriend had the Grabber 302 GT which he traded off for the Mercury comet GT, and our grandmother had a comet.

The Maverick was awesome, i certainly haven't forgot about it. That said with a properly or even decently tuned carb you won't smell gas

Once, when i was a kid (im 20 now btw), I saw a mint condition 1972 or 1973 ford Maverick Grabber with a nice front splitter, and I fell in love with it. Now, even today, I want one, but my family thinks it's too small and dangerous, and that I shouldn't buy one. They haven't changed my mind, and im looking online for one in drivable condition anyway. I've always had a love for the smaller muscle cars that this car competes with.

My mom had one when I was a kid. 74 Grabber yellow on black with a 250 i6. It got sold once she got her brand new escort wagon.

That was considered a compact back in the late 60s, plus the Maverick was super popular in Brazil.

my father drove one for about 2 - 3 years, was in good condition (exception of the seats, my fault), this was still in the early 1980s so I was just a kid then. he never pushed the car to go very fast for some reason. This video pretty much explained it The Maverick replaced the ford falcon that my parent's previously owned before gutting it and using it for parts between the Mustang (hatchback 1970s) and the Maverick my old man knew it was cheaper to do this since some of the parts were from the same engine Thanks for the video and history

My first car was a 1971 Mav, inline 6. Paid $75 for it. Sold it a few years later for $125, after putting a muffler and a solonoid on it. Doors flapped in the wind and I could see the road beneath me, but it was the only car I ever made a profit on. Life was simpler then...

With a carb, you pump the pedal 2-3 times BEFORE you start it on a cold start. Hold the pedal open just a little on a warm start.

The first car I drove on the street was my sister's '77 Maverick. It was dark brown, white half vinyl roof with orange plaid bucket seat interior. It was ugly but I got my license in it. Looking back, I should have shopped around for a cheap Maverick for my first car. The money I spent on my '67 Cougar would have gotten me a really nice Maverick instead or it's twin, the Mercury Comet. You said a few times that the Falcon made a comeback? You're thinking of the Fairmont which replaced the Maverick for '78, that was the first FOX body Ford. Australia never stopped making Falcons until a few years ago, their Falcons became a completely different car and went upscale. Brazil made the Maverick until '79 but with the small bumpers and they offered the GT with a four barrel 302 and 4 speed... it was their Mustang/musclecar. Argentina kept making the original Falcon until the '80s or early 90's with modern updates along the way.

I have the same car a 1974 Ford maverick but it has the stock 250 inline 6. My uncle got it out of a deal and left it to rot in his yard for 16 years. I asked him if I could have it, and he said if I can get it running then be my guest. Two weeks and $200 later I got it running and was able to get it from peris California to Hesperia California. That was two years ago I'm still working on it and loving the Maverick life.
