I wanted to put together this video highlighting things to know and what to look for when you are in the market for a Ford Mustang Shelby GT350/GT350R. I talk about the differences between the model years (2015-2020) as well as things to check before pulling the trigger. I hope y'all enjoy and find this helpful!

2017 Avalanche Grey GT350 here myself. One thing you did not mention and one of the more crucial things that these cars need is to be warmed up to operating temperature BEFORE leaning on the car at all. It's good for all vehicles but it's especially crucial in the 5.2 Voodoo engine. You can't jump into these cars and cold rev it to the moon or tag 8,250 RPM within the first 5 minutes of driving or it IS going to damage the engine. My 17 has been rock solid through 13,000 miles so far and barely has any change on the dipstick over an oil change interval. One of the reasons for the "buzz" of blown up or heavy oil consumption Voodoos is that lack of warming the engine up to temp before thrashing it. Until the engine temp is over 150 the car shouldn't really see heavy RPM if you want it to last. These are hand built "race engines" in a street car and they need a little more attention than the average sports car. Also, on the earlier models up to mid year 2017, the oil filters were different. The early cars had "spin on" type filters that MUST be torqued to 18-20 lbft or you risk having the engine vibration literally rattle the filter loose and have it fall off. Mid year 17 and up cars switched to a canister type filter to alleviate that concern. But the payoff is grand and the sound is one of a kind! :)

Agree 100% on your points. The engine warm up is critical on these engines. Bought mine new in 2017. I drive mine hard but not that often. Currently have 2800 miles on it. Absolutely no oil consumption. I have dealership change oil every year before it is parked for winter. That’s 4 oil changes so far. Cheap insurance.
@TheAlexk780

I think you both touched on great points here and important ones. Although I side on the error of caution before I start having fun. I’m pretty sure the manual says not to rev to 8250 or redline until the temp is 190 for the oil. So I’ve never run it hard until it’s full temp, I also always cold start my car and let it sit and warm up. Easy to do before you even begin to take off in the car if you start it then do the last few minute things. Collect, phone, put on shoes, use the restroom etc. but that’s just me. I’m 9k miles on my 18 with no oil consumption at all. I do collect a little oil in the passenger catch can. But it’s pretty minimal. Great advice though!

Great video, thanks! One point, though...the air/oil separators have a reservoir to catch condensed oil vapors, and the oil is not returned to the crankcase. They need to be checked regularly and drained as necessary. In almost all cases, the driver side air/oil separator will remain dry as a bone unless there is a severe engine problem. Most track driven cars only have the passenger side unit.

I’m not sure about the Shelby GT350 platform, but on WRX STIs, the air oil separators return oil back for recirculation. There are some catch cans that don’t do that and need to be emptied out though

I installed the ford performance oil catch cans on my 2020 GT-350R. They have to be serviced, they don’t drain the captured oil back into the engine. When changing my oil I use paper towels to get the oil out. My GT500 CFTP came with the factory catch can. It does drain the captured oil, back into the sump. The GT350 really needs the oil catch can. The Ford Performance kit is very nice.

Nice review of things to look for when looking for a GT350/R. Oil Separators are a real good idea. They require minimal service, just open them up and check them at the oil change interval. I also believe the FP Gift belongs with the car. If I sold mine, which I never will. It would go with the car. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Well done! 🤙🤙🐍🐍

Last summer I had the gen 2 block put in my 2017 due to oil consumption. Mine was eating oil unfortunately. If yours is eating any oil at all … it will only gradually get worse. Glad to say mine hasn’t eaten a drop in almost a year now. Some still under the factory warranty so if you have the 16-18 gt350 and eating ANY oil take to dealership now before the warranty expires

I purchased a like new 2020 GT350 in Kona Blue for myself 2 months ago (1 owner, 1.3k miles, fully loaded, $74k) I was in the market initially for 2018 because it was under warranty still. Then learned about the potential engine issues on that first Gen engine and shifted my attention to 19-20 models instead. Sadly I didn’t get that gift with it. I noticed your infotainment system is outdated. Maybe this could be a video idea. Hook it up to your WiFi under settings and update it. The new sync version is much nicer 💪🏼

Great video! Good advice on many points and things to expect. Although your comment got me with the “if it’s not you got lucky from Ford, or if it’s been wrecked and the body shop put it back together better than Ford”. The only reason I mention it is because Ford fixed a lot of them for Free because a TSB was issued for the rear bumper and a fix. Since so many people complained and went back to Ford wanting it rectified. So clean bumper lines especially the rear bumper doesn’t mean it was wrecked or an indicator per say. It could actually just show the previous owner was diligent and cared for the car well and took advantage of everything available to aid the car.

The rarer mustangs hold their value a bit better too. In 2015 I was looking for a car to get to work and back. I wanted a new 2015 Focus RS but did the responsible thing and bought a Focus Electric. Car was great but when I traded it in 7 years later it was only worth about 7K, while the rarer RS is going for more that it sold for new. I see Dark Horse kinda like the RS. Something rarer that should hold its value a little better. I recently tracked down a 2020 GT350 to enjoy while hoping it will hold its value while I enjoy it daily.

Be honest with yourself about what you will use the GT 350 for. We paid for the optional heated/cooled leather seats over the Standard Recaro. The Recaro's are fine for the track but not much else unless you are small in stature. If you want to drive the car details like this add up. I get 22-23 at 70-75 mph and it gets 18 around local driving. It can be a daily driver but understand it is about half dangerous in rain and colder temps with the stock tires. The difference in engine durability is not a deciding factor. Much of the reason the 350 got these upgrades....is that the GT 500 program was in place so they duplicated parts across both. Do NOT go full throttle and higher revs on this engine until OIL TEMPERATURE is at least 150 degrees. These engines can run well over 100 psi oil pressure with cold oil. I have never added oil between changes...do use the FORD GT 350 specific oil filter when changing oil or having it changed!

The only thing to note that you missed was the fact that Ford went back to the 1965 original white as opposed to the Oxford white like mine, I believe for just the 2020 model. Also added the vinyl strip along the sides underneath both doors. As others have already stated, the Ford Performance oil separators do NOT return oil anywhere and need to be emptied occasionally. The passenger side is all that is needed. I ended up removing my driver side one. Save the money. My car is essentially bone stock except for the addition of the blue air cleaner and a set of gas pistons to hold the hood up which is a great addition in my opinion. My resonators are coming off next. Always wanted to do it and just never got around to it.

At least of the engineers of the 350R bought one for himself. Really says a lot about the car ..

Good luck with the clear Protectors around ur whole car it's going to ruin ur paint over the years I'm a car painter and I hate dealing with cars that are wrapped with that shit it cracks up over time and is a pain in the ass to remove when it's old and cracked up

I like your review, but it’s lacking something! Limp mode and the oil coolers. The 2016 cars came in 5 different configurations, two of them being “R” models which came with carbon rim set and the seat deletes, of the two, one came with no radios and no AC. Both had the muffler deletes instead of those heavy resonators. The other three cars, one standard no magna-ride, tech-pack, and track pack. The coolers came in the track pack 350 and the two “R” models. In the forums most of us where discussing limp mode that the 350’s without the coolers where experiencing as owners unaware of the car not having those coolers, where over heating! They would shut down after two laps on a circuit and wait to cool off! There was a lawsuit….it waned because in the brochure Ford told of the models that had it and those that didn’t. So in re-sell, swapping and trading and general Dealer mark up fees buyers were getting pissed upset they where being robbed! Oil consumption…..I haven’t experienced in my 2016, I don’t track the car! But I do use amsoil! Near future I will probable add those cooler because I do want to track the vehicle. I will Adding wider meats, now in the process of tightening the IRS and later purchase some used Recaro’s since I have the comfort seats. The body of the car sucks and the interior pitiful but it’s a Ford! It can drive a figure eight like a demon that’s all I care about! Lol! And it’s pretty damn fast!

I got my 2018 GT350 with 17k miles, was dream car for me. By 17.5k miles I had AC replaced and I got plagued with the TSB 19-2135 issue. Basically in 5th gear, the car cuts power at constant throttle and revs hang sometimes, it does weird stuff. Make sure to do an extended highway drive when you buy one, I am stuck with a bunch of issues but still love it. Puts a smile on my face every time I fire it up

I’ve had multiple issues with the climate control. First, hot air-only on the drivers side and ice cold air-only on the passenger side. Six months after that was fixed, the OPPOSITE happened. Ice cold air-only on the driver’s side and hot air-only on the passenger side. After weeks at the dealership waiting for parts, it was fixed. I hope it sticks this time. But yes, the exhaust note makes me forget about all that.

Interesting, I was going to mention something regarding the AC because I’ve heard of one case but didn’t know it was a regular enough of a failure. And the TSB 19-2135 issue is a new one on me actually 🤔

That is interesting. I had Ford replace my AC pump as it made noise and destroyed itself. No problem now. I think that they're using a stock pump for like a regular Mustang that doesn't rev to 8200 RPM and that causes issues. Just a guess cuz my other Ford vehicles have never had AC issues. Just turn off AC if you're gonna go baller - unless there's a fix I'm not aware of...

I own a 2017 and had AC leaks fixed 2 times, then took it back a third time where the dealer replaced the compressor and evaporator and has been ok since

What an awesome video for potential gt350 buyers. Wish you made this before I bought mine. And one of your POV videos was a reason that I decided to buy a gt350.

In 2019 I purchased a new 2018 GT350, I love the vehicle but it has been the worst vehicle I’ve ever owned. Started issues, oil leaks, AC issues, radiator leaks, clutch leak, the list goes on. It’s now less than 25k miles on it and it’s sitting at the dealership over a seized engine just one week after they returned it to me… it’s a shame such a beautiful machine has been so problematic

Great info Brandon! A GT350 is certainly in my lottery garage as the second purchase after a nice 65 fastback restomod like the Revology cars. That's my ultimate car since my dad bought one as a family car when I was born. And I totally understand wanting to keep yours forever, as I still have my 87 LX hatch I bought new when I was 22. I never plan to get rid of it. My 16 GT would go first! Looking forward to more car content and seeing the new cars on order.

Thanks for watching Thomas! That’s great to hear you still have your LX from new! Love hearing that. And I’m with you on a 60s mustang. A 67’ GT500 something I would love to have at some point. Original or tribute build.

Are the ford performance catch cans different? How does the catch can take the oil back to the oil pan? Don’t the cans just catch the oil to prevent it going back into the intake manifold?

Great informative video Brandon! Always have enjoyed your content and I can’t wait to own one of these. I rented one on Turo for a 3 day weekend some time last year and I still can’t stop thinking about it. I would love to be able to get an R but I think that’ll be a bit out of my price range. Lol.

I just checked the prices. I thought they were all over 100k now but no they're still in my price range. I'm not ready now though. I want to buy in another 1.5-2.5 years. Hopefully they'll still be in the 60-75k range by then but I doubt it.

I'm looking to pick up a GT350 here in the new future. I test drove one last week and it was an amazing car. The Voodoo and that redline is insane. Also looking at one coming up this weekend, may purchase. We'll see.
