Absolutely the best video for heater core replacement available! I was quoted from $600-$1000 to do this job. Did it by myself. Used a ratchet strap around the dash and windshield to get the dash back in place, sucker is heavy for one person, took me about an hour-hour and a half. I did break the vent cover on the top of the dash in a few places because I didn’t have the correct tool to pop the tabs loose, other than that wasn’t too hard. Repair shops evidently make a killing doing these jobs. Thanks guys for taking the time to produce this video, I’m sure it’s saved a lot of people A LOT of $$$$.

Excellent video! There is one more dashboard bolt just right and above the gas pedal. For ease of steering column bolt removal turn the wheel ccw 90° before starting. Also need to take off the hood release as well as the emergency brake release located under the steering wheel. If doing this job alone you will likely need something the size of a cinder block sitting on the driver's seat. Put the steering wheel on it. Right side of dash helps to sit on something about 15 inches tall. Also disconnect neg then pos battery and wait a few minutes for the air bags to discharge. Then remove glove box followed by passenger air bag. Squeeze side tabs in to release box. Should be only 2 screws inside the glove box to release the bag. Removing radio helps. It has 2 screws vertical from bottom up, then pops out. On top of the dash near the windshield is a long black vent. It pops out with a flat head screwdriver. Beware of some connectors and vacuum lines behind the dash right. On passenger side above your right toe, look for an 11mm nut. If there is no nut present, then your year has a stud in which case you may need to remove passenger fender well to access a nut and release the heater fan box located inside engine compartment. Cover over heater core has 5 screws. Pull the dash back as far and as high as it will go. Bring a vacuum to get rid of those dry leaves that blow around in the ventilation system. Installation tip: The steering column linkage slides in and out of the firewall. Gently pry it out to align the linkage bolt. First time for me on a 2000 Ranger by myself took 5 hours outside at about 32°F. Look up what the screeming barfies are! If I did it again, maybe 4-1/2 hours. These guys are fast. A garage helps!

@John Smith I agree with John. Probably no need to remove the radio, glove box, or passenger air bag. I removed them to make it easier for me to see. It was my first time and I had no assistance moving things around. Thanks for the clarification John!

Don’t have to remove glove box, radio, fenderwell, etc. The only thing these guys didn’t cover was removing the vent cover on top of dash. I did the job in my 01 Ranger, by myself, in less than 2 hrs. I used a ratchet strap around the dash/windshield to get dash lifted back in place.

I found that I did not need to disconnect the steering at the knuckle.

You Guys! Thank You, Thank You! You detailed exactly everything needed for my 2000 Ford Ranger R & R heater core. I've been a shade tree mechanic for about 50 years, on and off, so I do know which end of the wrench to use. I used only the very basic tools and the most specific was a deep 7/16" socket. Without this video, I would still be out there, but, no, I am done, tools away and time to get cleaned up. Thank You, Both, again. To comment on those saying it can't be done in an hour, I cannot agree. If you have done one and know where all the fasteners are and the steps to take and the tools at hand, easy two guys can pop the heater core out in an hour, and back together again, ready for coolant in another hour or less, no problem. If it took you a long time it is probably because you watched somebody else's video, like I did, before you found this one. Chris

It slides right up and a little wiggle here and there and it is out. The new one goes in with the same dance steps, only in reverse. Easy.

@@chrislaplante9797my 99 3.0 heater core won't come out because the heater box unit, which is like 3 feet long gets caught up on the cup holder. Can only pull it up 3 inches and it's about 8 inches tall. Rip

Did you have to take the air conditioning loose at all? I heard you talk about the housing but did you have to crack the lines at all and then have to get the thing reserviced?

Chris Pine I don't have a/c on my truck, but I removed my heater core off a junkyard truck thathad a/c. You're only moving the engine heat exchange off the engines firewall back an inch or two (with its doubled up nuts and bolts that are stacked on one another) to release the giant housing box inside the cab. Hope this helps explain it a bit.
@michaellapierre12446 жыл бұрын
Nope. No AC service required.
@chrislaplante97973 жыл бұрын
No A/C work, at all required. Evaporator box only moves back about an inch or so, just to get at the hidden nuts holding the interior heater box to the firewall.

Hey Guys, thanks for this video. I just changed out mine, but after I got it all back together, the air only blows from the defroster now, no matter what I have the dial to the far right set on. The blend actuator works fine, just not the settings that control where you want the air to blow. Any ideas why this might be? Any advice is appreciated.

Probably because that's what the book calls for even if it took me an hour I'm not going to charge someone 50 bucks to change a heater core like that no other shop would charge that cheap...

If it only takes an hour...where is your shop...parts under 100.00 labor...125.00 tot 300.00. Some thiefs are charging 3X more for labor.
