Still have my first vehicle my grandpa bought me whe I was 14. Im 22 now. A 1998 ford ranger with the indestructible pushrod 4.0 with the 5 speed manual. She's got 240k miles and I've traveled the whole country with it. Im in the process of restoring it, 3 years and $9k into it so far and she's looking and running like new again. Ill never get rid of it. Rip grandpa.

I have a 98 XLT flairside bed with cap has every option. Has twin bucket factory seats. Its in show condition, no scrathches dents or rust. Original paint got it 5 years ago with 80k original miles was garage kept. Only paid 4000.00 too I detailed finish back to new and its garaged just turned to 105k miles 4.0 . Has manual 5 speed and we basically use it to pull behind motorhome. It is the perfect truck to tow behind to hold all our extra stuff when we are on the road with camper. I have inflatable 12 ft motor boat In a container slides right in bed takes up 25% of bed area, along with 2 bikes mounted to rear hitch and extra stuff we use out of bed. In winter when traveling I keep 12lb propane tank as backup for Rv so we dont run out and its easier to refill in pickup then moving the RV out to refill. I then run propane hose to RV if needed. The extended cab is perfect for the dog to ride in when we are not hitched up to RV. With all the toys in Bed once we unhitch from RV we are set to go to lake or bike trails. Its a great truck will out live me with on 100k miles. I keep it very well maintained. Just replaced rear wheel seals and bearings, new Motorcraft shocks. I use only motorcraft replacement part as well. I average 18 mpg 5 speed helps. With 4.0 and 5 speed she can pick up and go. Added Flowmaster Stainless cat back exhaust gives it a little growl. Other than that its all original no rust. I treat the frame as well to keep rust from forming.

I've owned two Rangers, a 2001 and currently a 2008. Loved them both. The 01 died of frame cancer but it's motor and transmission live on in another truck. Current 08 only has 59k miles on it and running strong. If you take care of them and can keep the rust off 'em, these little trucks last a long, long time. It's a beast in the snow too. I'm not sold on the new gen Ranger yet.

Just bought a 1998 Ford Ranger; 134,000 miles. It's not as quiet as a car but I don't care cause it's a truck. It cruises at 70 mph all day, the a/c is cold, I love the simplicity of the dashboard, everything makes sense, it's simple unlike modern cars where you have to take a class just to set the clock. I hate new cars where radio and heating are both digital so you're pressing a button forever, with this truck you just turn the dial to what you want, it's instantaneous! The interface between human and car has already been perfected 20 yrs. ago, why modern cars need to eff with it is beyond me. This is true especially of German cars, apparently the Germans think driving a car should be a painful experience when dealing with accoutrements.

I agree they’re a solid truck, but not near as good as a hilux. I’ve had to replace my whole cooling system due to leaks, intake gaskets, axle seals, you get it. All those seals start to go out when they hit 20 yrs. The weak spot in the ford ranger is the forbidden timing chain you have to pull the motor to get access to.

It has 32,000 miles on it (I'm retired and don't go out much anymore.) It failed me for the first time 3 days ago. I had it towed to a shop where I was told the fuel pump needed to be replaced. They had to remove the bed of the truck to do that job. Cost of that job, including the tow, was $875, I still love it, though.

2007 Ranger XL 4.0L auto 4x4. It handles well. It hauls tools and materials well. It gets 18 to 19mpg on back roads and 16 or so using it for work in city. I towed a single axle open utility trailer with low walls on it all over NY to the tune of 1,000 miles a week or more for 6 months when I first got into maintaining forclosed homes. I cut miles back and continued to use it in that regard for a couple years. Ive used my truck for courier deliveries with my Lear brand cap and ive done landscaping work with it. Its now a rusty heap but still at nearly 250,000 miles it still doesnt burn any oil and has most of its original parts except for transmission, 1 tie rod end, ware items, and I replaced a noisy fuel pump for reliability sake (didnt want to be stranded at 20 below zero)

I purchased a 2001 Ranger "Edge", 4wd, V-6, 4 door in beautiful red to replace another truck that had been T-boned. It had just over 200K miles on it. But, the truck had been owned since new by a service writer (now retired) at a local Ford dealer. That truck was EXTREMELY well cared for. When I took it to that dealer for inspection and service the service writers and mechanics recognized it and were complimentary about it. It has run like new with one exception about some valve involved with coolant circulation, that is under the intake manifold, that failed (well, things happen). I have about 230K miles on it now, it gets decent gas mileage if I do my part. I plan on keeping it until the family uses it for my hearse. (Yes, I am an old fart.)

I'm currently on my second Ranger! The first vehicle I purchased was a 2008 Ford Ranger. I loved that truck. It was as basic as they came! Manual windows, locks, and transmission. It didn't have a back seat. It was the 2.3 and got insanely good gas mileage for a pickup truck. I averaged 24 city, 28-30 highway. I never planned on getting rid of it, but unfortunately in July of 2022 I blew a tire on a dirt road in the mountains and ended up rolling a few times totaling it. Last week I ended up picking up a 1999 Ranger! This has ALL the features! Power windows, locks and transmission. It is the 4 door configuration, it's in Pristine condition with only 127,000 miles! I sure do love my Rangers!!!

My story is almost identical to yours! I bought a 1995 extended cab XLT. It was very basic, manual everything, although the original stereo did play CDs! Drove that truck for years, last fillup was at 330k miles. In 2019 the transmission went, and we had it changed. Less than a month later the clutch went. Didn't have the $1200 to have it fixed so it sat in front of my house from 2020 until about a week ago when we donated it to charity. Just replaced it with a 2010 extended cab XLT with ALL the buttons and whistles. Power everything, suicide rear access doors, I LOVE it. Plan to keep it until the wheels fall off.

Just last week I had an opportunity pop up on a 98 extended cab XLT 4X4 manual with ~ 187,000 miles. Great review! I bought a '99 XLT flareside 4x4 with the Off-Road suspension package in November 2019 as a weekday driver. It has 257k on the odometer. They really are solid trucks. The old 3.0 still starts right up with no troubles, so I had the transmission rebuilt, and repaired my air conditioner myself two weeks ago. Everything's easy to fix on them. Ford really dropped the ball not updating to a 6 speed and the 3.7 V6 from the Mustang. That would've made a great towing truck and highway cruiser.

@@edoneill6701 bs. Maybe if you're a professional and you have complete instructions as to where every nut and bolt is and have all the right tools, still I seriously doubt you can do it in 20 minutes. I couldn't find any instructions, except for a lot of really bad videos on KZbin, mostly with people giving up on doing it properly, and doing total hack jobs and tearing it apart with reciprocating saws. I managed to do it properly anyway, but it took me weeks! I took a lot of long breaks to avoid loading it up with dynamite and blowing it to pieces. I know for a fact that I'm not the only one that had a hard time doing it. Knowing that heater cores have a limited life span and tend to blow out, there should be an easy access panel, and you should be able to replace it without taking out the whole freaking dash. The idiot who owned the truck before me had a leaking radiator or hose, and was replacing the coolant with water, and overpressured the system.

Always though the Ranger was always better build quality then the S10/1st gen Colorado and the Dodge Dakota. And a better value then a used Tacoma. I feel like the Ranger and the Nissan Frontier are like the two hidden gems of the used compact truck market. You can find them in nice shape and for a reasonable price and they are actually really well built little trucks.

There are several Rangers in our neighborhood none newer than 1999 and none with that bed style....And despite my best efforts to buy one of them....NONE of them were for sale by either the original or second owners when I was looking for a "beater" pickup for hunting and fishing trips. Only two are 4X4 and all have manual transmissions. our "back yard neighbor" purchased his 2nd generation Ranger at a local farm auction and did all the work needed to put it back on the road as his all purpose daily driver. He does all required/needed maintenance in his driveway and/or backyard and has almost 400,000 miles on the original engine and transmission (including the 80,000 miles put on by the original owner-farmer)….Since none of the Rangers OR Broncos of the era were for sale I ended up with a 230,000+ mile '05 Chevy Colorado 4X4 Colorado (five cylinder engine). Having been raised on Ford pickups (yeah I know Mazda pickups were virtual twins to the Fords) and never a GM product fan I do wish I could have found a decent extended cab, 4X4, manual transmission, second or third generation Ranger it would be in our driveway now. While the new Ranger is "pretty" I'm not overly impressed with what looks like a slightly smaller, over priced, version of the F-150.

I love my little 99' Ford Ranger. The 3.0L engine is super reliable and I've never had major trouble. Replaced the heater core and ball joints and we're ready to go again. I still prefer my 2016 Tacoma considering the Ranger gets worse fuel economy.

@@CL-ty6wp the new 2.7L 4cyl Tacomas get mid 20s and are much more comfortable than a 90s 4cyl Ranger. Between 2012 and 2018, the Ford ranger was still being sold in the European market. They originally were going to bring it back to the US as the F 100, but changed back to the Ranger for marketing issues. The modern version is more of a midsized truck.

I LOVE my 2006 Ford Ranger extended cab pickup!!! It's simple, rugged and durable, yet still looks great and is extremely durable!!! My only 'minus' about the truck is that my Ranger doesn't have A/C or 4/4 drive... Can't complain to much as I rarely need the 4/4 drive and A/C in Washington State is only rarely needed in the summers we have up here! We've looked at the new Ford Rangers, but we think the new Rangers are waaaay overpriced and almost as large as the Ford 150's... Ford is missing out on designing and offering a smaller, compact truck with similar options as the original Rangers!!! From what I've seen and researched, the new BritishAustralian/New Zealand Couriors might be a great option for city dwellers and small home owners rather than the larger Ford 150's which are waaay larger and overpriced for the average home owner! A Ford owner from waaay back in 1956!!! LOVE FORD'S!!!

Had me a 2002 and 2001 3.0 Rangers with the 5 Speed manuals. My favorite vehicles I ever had. pushed them both to over 300,000 miles (for context both had about 220,000 miles when I got them). Unfortunately, in a stroke of bad luck, both of them were totaled by other drivers. One a head on collison with a drunk and one t-boned by a driver that just couldn't wait at a red light. I loved the trucks but I definitely took the full force of those collisons as the safety tech wasn't the best lol

3:16 1994? The ROUND body ranger came out in 1993, but still had the SQUARE dash of previous gen for 1993-1994. And then in 1995 when to the round dash, They were also I-BEAM trucks still from 93-97 and in 1998 became SLA front suspension. The Regular cabs are 3" longer beginning in 1998 and switched to the same bolt in rear window as the Supercabs.

The flareside looks funny , it's no wider than the regular box but it can't use the same bed covers or canopies because the rails are to narrow . My wife bought an 03 Ranger with the 3.0. FAIR WARNING FOR THE 3.0: Keep an eye on the CAMSHAFT SYNCHRONIZER. if you hear squeaking (especially at idle) check towards the rear of the engine bay and if you detect it's coming from there (slightly on the passenger side) you need to replace this part ASAP!! If not you could risk losing oil to the entire engine if this part goes out. It's an easy fix just do some research on it and keep that in the back of your head if you're looking at the 3.0 Ranger.
