The system being shown was made by Denso, a Japanese automotive products company. The V2V system has been primarily developed at a Denso facility in Vista, CA. Denso does not seem to be placing a high priority on this technology since the engineering team they have working on this is not a first rate team that you would find at a place like Google or a good startup. V2V holds a lot of promise, not only for vehicle safety, but as a way to share other information. Hopefully other companies will develop competitive technology that is better then what Denso has to offer (their system has problems other than what the commentator mentioned).

+Wayne Berry They have already thought about. Signals will only be read if signed properly similar to how it is done on the road.

It seems to me, that autonomous cars will only be able to safely operate roads where only V2V-equipped vehicles are allowed.

Why would there be a bandwidth problem? Isn't it implemented using a Mesh Network?
@thinkofwhy

***** That's what i mean. A mesh network would not have a bandwidth issue, since the signal would be within a few hundred meters at most. That would not encompass many vehicles.

+thinkofwhy well there's actually some problems, one being the congestion of packet exchange which leads to loss of information Li-Fi doesn't have those problems, and i am working on it right now!

it would be interesting if v2v tech used p2p tech to talk to a large amount of cars
