Apparently there were lots of 1.3 Ford Sierras sold in Greece during the early 1980's and I recall Finland received a special 1.3 turbocharged version which was about as powerful as the 2.0 carb... My guess is these countries had strict tax and emission laws and the smaller engine cc size was sold over there to get around this problem... Of course the brochure in this video was probably printed during 1982/1983 so the 2.8 XR4i and 2.9 gls 4x4 had not come out yet... or that mighty RS Cosworth ! Great video ! - I enjoyed watching this with great interest ! 👍

I’m from the US but have always LOVED the Sierra. A very exotic car in my eyes. We only had the XR4ti in the states and only for 4 years before sales collapsed. I particularly love the “Sierra Saloon” you’ve featured. In the states cars like this are referred to “heater and keys”…in other words- Customer: “what are the features of this car?” Salesman: “Well, you get a heater and keys.” 😂

😂 My Dad too had 2.0 GL in the late 80's. Your comment brought back forgotten memories of my mum complaining about the amount of fuel it used and insisted that it must be broken! It was red, and I thought that it was a spaceship compared to the previous car - a Volvo 244.

In 1989 I owned a second hand Y reg 1983 Ford Sierra 1.3 base in dark green , the previous owner must have splashed the cash because it had a Ford radio fitted .

The Sierra was one of Ford's first-ever cars to get the 5-speed manual gearbox option. It's strange that the Cortina Ghia has standard alloys, yet the Sierra Ghia does not, though its wheel covers are well-finished and the tyres are wider. Also, we had to wait until October 1984 to see a rev-counter on a GL, and standard alloys on a Ghia. I used to love the mk1, they really are quite different to the mk2. And in the UK, British Telecom had a huge fleet of base model Sierra estates in yellow, all had rear seats removed (so effectively quite posh vans) and they were running them until about the mid-'90s.

As I have said before, my dad had a few sierra estates, and one got reversed in to by lorry at his head office and was written off. I remember that he told me that when she was better! She would silver not red, and her mouth would be closed, meaning the grille as the write of was a GL and his new car was a ghira I thought at the time that the car doctors were really cleaver! I was only about 6 years old I loved the written off car and didn't realise it was a different car!.

I can add a little history to the Ford sierra, my old design tech teacher was on design crew of sierra and it was meant to be released a year or two earlier but had to go back because crosswinds on curved sill used to lift the car off the floor !!!!! Bet you didn’t know that !

If you was around when the Sierra was revealed you knew what a sea change the design was and it gave new meaning to the words "jelly mould" now forever synoynmous with Sierra styling. I dont think weve seen such a massive move away in body style design since it was that big a revolution over 4 decades ago. Never knew the sierra came as a 4 speed! Amazed the Base didnt even get a basic radio!

I noticed a massive price jump between the 2.0 and 2.3 petrol versions of GL and Ghia. Almost £1000. The 2.3 may have sounded better but it would have used more fuel and it didn't have much advantage in performance. The 2.0 GL would have been my pick of the range at that early time.

I only saw a few of the base model in real back in the days. But I do like the simplicity of it.

It’s so funny to watch this because memories are coming back. I remember my dad saying that everyone in my hometown hated this car and that’s why he especially bought it in October 82 😅 it was the 1.6 L version. But in Germany we didn’t have these strange looking side mirrors. Our L had the „usual“ one (yeah, just one on the drivers side 😉) from the shown GL and Ghia model. And we had a rear window wiper! I guess there might have been differences between German and UK models. I remember a girl of my school class. Her parents had the standard model as an estate. No wheel covers, just grey plastic in door covers, these strange side mirror… but already with side protection bars at the doors and in Germany the grill was not grey, it was colored like in all the other models. Very noticeable different to the other versions were the headrests. They were not fully padded like in the L/GL/Ghia models. Rather they were just plastic framed headrests. Great memories though 😉 I remember a school friend who said that he liked my parents car very much because it looks sporty as a Porsche 😳 the Sierra 1.6 L 🤣 I just answered „thank you“ 😅

Mark kenworthy. I went to the original launch at London docklands as it was being built. I used to sell a few of the business estates with heavy duty rear suspension. We were importing cortins crusaders from Ireland in early 1983 .so was the reluctance for people to switch to the early sierras.

When did the rare 3 door Sierra start to be sold, I always thought it was available at the start, but obviously not. I had a very early 2.0 GL in metallic blue. It had the row of warning lights in the centre of the dash which used to be rather tempermental and flash on and off for no reason. Always remember the floppy dipstick with the wiring harness attached. Very comfortable car as it had full height tyres, not the rubber bands they seem to use today. I believe the Ghia style front end became standard on most models fairly early on as I knew someone with an A reg 1.6 L which had the same front end. The only model to keep using the slatted grille was the 1.8 diesel.

Sierra: I suppose calling this model "Mountain Range" wasn't catchy. 😁 I don't know if anyone is familiar with the 'autosh**e' car forum. A member is running a 1.6 litre Y reg base model in red with the grey grille identical to the one in the brochure. It has been a challenging car to own. I do think Ford were mean not to include front seat head restraints from the beginning on the Sierra base. I don't think the front seats even had the fixings on the top of the seats so they could be be easily fitted at a later date. Plus: correct me if I'm wrong but to get a 5 speed gearbox buyers had to go for the L spec. At least that's what I picked up from a previous Ford brochure video. If the Sierra was a bit too radical for buyers in 1983/84 they could have gone for a Hyundai Stellar! How about a Hyundai brochure in the future? 🙂

The thing that's funny about the base model is that the bare dash looks very similar to the one in my sister's old mk2 Fiesta 1.1 Popular Plus, B117BWO. Even the wheels are the same. Though her Fiesta came with a digital clock, passenger door mirror and rear wiper. So a Fiesta can be more posh than a Sierra.

The car's best intentions were good, but the styling was bizarre to say the least and put a lot of people off, with the Vauxhall Cavalier eating up it's sales for lunch.
