Thanks for the video. Haven't done drum brakes in over 20 years and in my old age I refuse to pay a mechanic for this old car. Even though I took pictures I was able to reference your video for spring placement and the order to re-assemble the brakes. Hardest part was getting the drums off. For the e-brake, I left it attached to it's plate and just attached that to the new shoe. I also left the wheel hub on, I did not remove it.

Yeah. I do brake repairs once in a blue moon and cars are a little different one to another, so It's good to have someone spend the time making a video to help another person out. Thank you. I have found that when I do one side at a time, I have the other side left intact as a guide to help me when doing the side I'm working on. After I get one side all done then I move on to the side that I had left intact and do it also.

Great video. Didn't think drum brakes would suck this much, but at least they're done!
@zenithperigee74424 ай бұрын
They really suck when you "thought" you had everything you needed, I'm talking ALL new parts, drums, even parking brake cables because they were rusted and coming out of their grommet/locations.... YET after tackling the driver's side like here, everything is off except of course the brake cylinder, so begin to unscrew the tube from the back and it just wants to twist and SNAP!! So the tiny black brake line you can see at the top backside of the backing plate, snapped. I wasn't even at home then so I had to find a bolt to plug off that brake hose so I could drive the vehicle. It turns out "Nope can't just buy a replacement brake line tube online!" You can the right rear, not left.... I wasn't going to the dealer to check and the other way to get the OEM-style part would be to "buy a pre-bent KIT between ~$130-$300 dollars." I didn't need "8+ brake lines costing hundreds of dollars." I just needed this one tiny one. So I opted for a local parts store, I think it was either a 6" or 8" straight brake line tube (bubble flare) with connectors. It was around ~$9-$12 at O'Reilly's. Clearly I was going to have to bend the tube myself. I bent it by hand with no tools and turns out my bending abilities are pretty good since the part nearly looked "factory!" The fluid flowed, brakes pumped up and no leaks! So I'd say that actually worked out pretty good. It just sucked that I was ill-equipped that day because I didn't expect the tube to snap and then not even be able to buy an OEM replacement.

Great in depth video, you explained how and why you did each step. I took my wife's 2000 Taurus SES into a Midas shop, it didn't even have a hundred thousand miles on it. I tried to change the read drum brakes on it. I tried to release the brake adjuster by using long thin flat bladed screw driver, to push it away from the star nut adjuster. I wasn't able to back it off so off to Midas and the guy had to break that rear brake drum. His work station was right next to the waiting room and watching that guy beat on that drum to break it. everyone in the shop was watching he even had to replace the backing plate, and the price of that brake job cost me a lot of money, and time. I'll never go to Midas again. His excuse he had no other choice but beat on it like and yeah right and you bent the backing plate. he used a big hammer and pry bar, that bent the backing plate.

Thanks for the video Chris. I'm on my daughter's 02 Taurus, catching hell with the springs! Using the little tool makes the retainer springs look toooo easy! Removing the wheel hub, isn't necessary, but it does give a lot more room! On the wheel hub there is a tooth gear for antilock, clean between each tooth, if the gap is full of rust the sensor won't read it properly

I let the shoes go to far and bored out the inside of the drum I pounded for a long while then decided to scar the face of the drum and popped it open with a chisel and the rest was a piece of cake. (I did not have an adjustment tool to my disposal) note if you are going to use a grinder to make your cut down the side and spin the drum for each cut in case you do go through you won't take out your piston.. Great video bud all the best. I sure wish I had a garage like you get to work in.

FordTechMakuloco hey I'm having a problem with my 2001 se I was stopped at a light yesterday and the motor quit as if I shut it off. After checking my fuel pump, the filter all the way to the fuel rail is all good so I pulled the plugs out to see if they were wet and they are not it's not getting any gas in the cylinders so while I was doing that I checked to see how I was doing on the fire side of things. And I'm not getting either no fuel no fire same time. I had a friend hook up a computer to it and it's clear. And it turns over good just won't start no warnings nothing just quit at the light. And I'm sure it did not flop the timing belt. I'm open for suggestions on this one. Is there a sensor or fues somewhere that the computer wouldn't pick up. Please help thanks
@FordTechMakuloco10 жыл бұрын
As soon as the key is turned to the on position the fuel pump comes on and pressurizes the fuel system, you should be able to hear it come on as it will be quiet. If it is not then we need to check power and ground to the pump, at the pump harness connector passenger side below rear door.

Good job man, this is the last thing I have to do on my 2005 Taurus, the shoes are fine but old, and they are the riveted type, which I hate, got new drums, new wheel cylinders, new spring kits and bonded brake shoes, these are one of the easiest drum brakes to do, and I`ve done alot, I hate drum brakes, LOL But I have all the proper brake tools, so it`s a snap.
@moebiusfan95459 жыл бұрын
I've watched almost all your vids - they have helped me many times! I used this one tonight and was able to take care of my rear passenger brake issue. While driving I began hearing a strong rubbing noise. Turns out the upper spring had come loose and the adjuster had fallen to the bottom of the drum. Without the spring, I guess the shoes remained rubbing against the drum. Had to get a new adjuster and got new springs while I was at it. Shoes were fine though. Have you seen this happen before? Not sure how that spring (the end attached to the emergency brake shoe) could come loose. So I am concerned there may be another underlying issue. Thanks as always!! James
@FordTechMakuloco9 жыл бұрын
James Coley It likely came loose from the shoe side make it is in there all the way I have fought this in the past.

Just finished assembling my 2006 Taurus drum brakes. Thanks a million for the video. Also, the tip for the parking brake cable described in the ford escape video really helped. Ran into a problem when i tried to bleed the drivers side. First 2-3 times fluid came out as normal and brake pedal sank to floor. then suddenly no fluid came out and pedal did not move to floor. Any ideas? Could it be related to the proportioning valve? thanks...
@treborhi7 жыл бұрын
Stumbled across my old post and thought I'd give follow up. I tried bleeding again the the next morning and found that the problem had simply gone away. Something must have relaxed & reset?!? Been driving car ever since with no issues. Still curious though what may have caused this. What follows is a brief description of my car's brake system. - The car does NOT have ABS. - It has two devices near the master cylinder that I think are proportioning valves. There are two brake lines from the master cylinder, one feeds proportioning valve A and the other feeds proportioning valve B. Each proportioning valve then feeds two brake lines, one to a front brake and the other to a rear brake. What are the functions of these valves? Will they block flow to a brake? - Near the rear drum brakes there is a device that I learned is called a load/level proportioning valve. Apparently it senses the load in the trunk. With a heavy load, more fluid pressure is directed to the rear brakes. Thanks!

Because i couldnt get the cable back on the vehicles drum lever and i couldnt find a single video on how to do it,i cut the darn thing off. Im very proud of myself and disgusted with myself doing this drum brake job. Happy about being able to do the brakes but sad with myself for not knowing how to reattach ebrake cable to the drum and giving up and cutting it off :(
@johncasor96982 жыл бұрын
cut it off ??? just go buy the tool that hooks on the spring of the cable and it squeezes the spring together so you can reattach it to the lever , most auto parts stores sell the tool it is just plyers that have a fork looking end on it to go into the spring...

One thing to remember is that the parking brake adjuster strut is a three piece unit. The long threaded portion with the single slot, the toothed wheel and the shorter two slot that is not threaded. make sure to clean and lubricate the threads AND non threaded shaft that goes into the smaller two slotted part as they get seized often. The whole thing on my car on the right side was seized so it couldn't adjust and the parking brake stopped working on that side. I also believe it wasn't applying full braking force while driving due to the adjustment being off.
