I own a "88 Turbo Coupe.....My uncle bought it new as he worked at the Lorain Assembly Plant in Lorain,Ohio where the Thunderbirds and Merc Cougars were built.....They used to let people who bought a car brand new follow it down the line and see the various steps of the car being built...Alot of guys who did this would tell their buddies on the line to hook them up and put "extra" stuff on the car....One supervisor had 2 floorpans installed in a car that he ordered....They caught him in the end as they started weighing the cars at the end of the line and his was overweight....They fired his ass.Pretty cool piece of American automotive history.

The Fox body Mustang launched for the 1979 model year, not 1983.

The T-Bird redesign was 83, like they said, the platform was 78, the Fairmont intro, Mustang FOLLOWED in 79.

You are absolutely right and it was not the third generation Mustang. Gen 1, 1964.5 thru 1966. Gen 2, 1967 -1968. Gen 3, 1969 - 1970. Gen 4 1971 - 1973. Gen 4, 1974 - 1978, (Mustang II not really worthy of being called a Mustang) Gen 5, 1979 onward - the Fox Body Mustang.

@@JohnZupanc Yes, we can most certainly agree that the Mustang 2 SUCKS, even though they spent millions in a rush following customers outcry to squeeze a V8 in again for 75, but the shrunken yet still sturdy steering and suspension components to accommodate the V8 were of good use to hot rodders and people putting Windsors in Pintos alike.

@@BrianPatterson-k4q My sister had a white 1975 Mustang II Cobra II with a 302 V8. Her previous car, a 1968 Mustang with at 289 four barrel carb well outperformed the Mustang II. Also the stripes on the Cobra II, a decal, started pealing soon after she bought the car. So the dealer replaced the decals with real painted on blue stripes. Mustang II is an insult to the Mustang brand.

@JohnZupanc Agreed, Mustang 2 had like 140 HP as I recall, put headers and 500cfm Holley 2 bbl as I used to on smogger 302s, recurved distributor, maybe 160-170 at BEST

Had an '85 turbo Coupe. 5 Speed/T5. 145 HP. 225-60/15 Goodyear "Gatorback" tires. Was a nice enough car. Suffered from big car/small engine syndrome in traffic. Was a better road car. The 2.3 L four is a refinement of the 2.3 engine used in the Pinto. Engine made in Brazil. I have not seen a T-bird on the road in decades now.

@@siddiqahmad5193 The '87 and '88, at the time, were the most technologically advanced US-made cars. Kind of hard to imagine. However, they were computer operated OHC turbo engines, F.I. Anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes etc. I preferred the styling of the '83-'86, but they had no anti-lock and had drums on the rear.
