Cool. I also made our van bed removable because we do a lot of construction, so hauling large things like plywood or whatever. I just installed a 2x3 along each side of the van with some bolts, then I made 4 separate panels with 2x3 frames and plywood on top. Slide them over the side 2x3 supports and screw 2 screws each side for each frame panel. Unscrew the screws and take out the 4 panels and you've got lots of room to haul. But I have also found that for certain things we can just keep the bed in to haul lots of things too. Like if needed, we can even slide plywood and things like that on top of the bed. Just remove the mattress/bedding etc.

Great system for the bed. Only change I would make is to have slats for the base because a solid bed base makes the mattress go mouldy in a van; too much moisture build up. Ikea makes doing slats super easy, you can even buy them with their own pre-constructed frame (£80 for a king size) if you haven't got the tools to make a groove in your side supports (£30 without the frame for a king size). Thanks for sharing.

Drill the platforms that you saw him pull off the cross-members with a hole saw for door handles, still relatively strong and now airy and lighter as the slats would be.

Are you worried at all about having rigid pieces of wood across the span of the van? I seem to remember reading that allowing some flexion to occur in the van walls is important while driving. Also can the van wall pillars support the body weight of all the bed material and 2 full grown adults? I have always assumed that is why you see so few builds like this, but this is certainly a lot simpler and more space-conscious than building boxes!
