I was able to repair my door as I caught it early before all the spot welds broke, had two out of the six intact, FYI there are three welds on the door edge behind the weatherstripping also. I drilled jut above the original welds using a 3/16” bit and using a pneumatic rivet tool and stainless rivets all was sucked down tight, easy fix if you catch it in time.

I see that with the door open, the inner part is quite aligned. Temporary weld it in place, drill some extra holes and put in some rivets. Until the new door is in.

Anyone remember when early 1997 F150 would get a crack in the door just above the handle where the westherseal joint went from vertical to horizontal .... had it happen to my early build low VIN 4x4 5.4 reg cab short bed off road should have lived with the crack i got it back with the door panel scratched all to hell and the reinstall was horrible the tech took no pride in the fix Keep up the good work and quality content 👍

I'm a little surprised that Ford doesn't want their techs to attempt fixing the broken welds, especially since Ford is ok with welding in new frame sections which has much more potential to be a safety issue. As a customer, I'm not sure if I would want a new door because that would require blending paint into the LF fender, LR door and A-pillar at a minimum to do things properly. It might just make more sense to repair the broken welds and reinforce the area with a couple extra plug welds. No one would ever notice a little touch-up paint in the door jam, but if half the car gets painted because a door was replaced, there's a big risk that the repair will be noticeable and impact the resale value of the vehicle. Most people don't like buying vehicles that have had multiple panels repainted when a similar car with factory paint is an option.

It is a work van, most are white that get heavy use as the bulletin suggested, perhaps if it is a personal van the problem may never surface.

I would think that being that the vehicles were MADE for fleet use, they would up the quality, not lower it, knowing it would get heavy use. This type of issue is one of the reasons why some businesses might go with a foreign manufacturer like Nissan. Not that they are actually any better, but once burned, twice shy....

Happned to my escape door, I unbolted the check arm from the frame and was able to open and close the door and use the window without issues, just have to watch out opening the door because it opens wide.

Classic beancounter engineering. Engineer wants 10 spot welds. Lean engineer says " We can get by with 3. It will save 18 seconds of robot time" Saving seconds but loosing thousands and loosing customers.

I just had a rental car in the shop that had the same issue. I thought somone drove the car in reverse with the door open, but this explains it.

Call up your local dealer have them run your VIN number let them know that there is a service campaign out on this particular issue where the rivets break inside the door and see what type of coverage there is

Body shop will pull pull door panel,, drill out broken welds .then re weld it and repaint the inside door jamb reinstall panel call it fixed

I had this problem recently and got the door problem fixed on my 2020 Escape Titanium Hybrid. I used machine screws at about 3/16", 6 fender washers, and 6 nylock nuts. They are WAY more reliable than rivets. The body shop was going to rip me off by wanting to replace the whole door which is $4000-$5000. The only problem is the window now. It screwed up the machinations behind the window. How can I get the window problem solved?

We have a 2020 Titanium Escape...wifes ride. Its been to dealer a handful of times for the passenger front door not shutting correctly (they finally replaced the hinges and latch) but its still not 100% but good enough. Also the common issue with the subwoofer rattle that I'm not entirely sure what they did aside rom something about "adding insulation" so I'm not going to look. It is a lease so not really our problem....lol. Aside from that its a great little SUV.

The door cost 2000 dollars plus 2000 labor just had it replaced on 2920 escape titanium. Ford payed the bill, still under warranty.

Many have fixed this with either rivets or SS bolt and nylock nuts. I would almost go the bolt method,but use good sized washers to get a good hold on the inside of the door... or washers with a rivet fix. If you are out of warranty it is a couple of hours to avoid a couple thousand to replace the door, also you WILL damage stuff inside the door if you don't fix this somehow. There is wiring in that area that it could damage and that could disable your locks from working correctly (at least what I have seen other experience).

I did this fix, and it's holding so far. Bolts, nyloc washers, oversized washers, and need an angle attachment for your drill. Saved $$$$$. Going to show the dealer next week! lol

Just came back from my Ford Dealership was told that the drivers door had to be replaced at a cost to me of about $3000 they said they might be able to get Ford to pay for half of it that’s still $1500 for a manufacturing defect, I’m going to fix it myself.

Yeah, it’s BS, my son’s girlfriend’s car did this. Hers wasn’t covered under warranty since they bought it used. $2500 and a 12 month wait for a new door. I drilled all the spot welds out and put heavy duty 1/4” rivets in their place. I used touch up paint on the rivets to help hide them. It’s holding up so far.

Seems Ford's spot welders are crap . I've had many door window run channels on Fords where the spot welds broke and the run channel just flops around in the bottom of the door . A couple of self drilling screws always worked for me .

At the time when I was working at the Ford dealer because now I'm a general manager at my own facility which is an independent shop it was covered under warranty I don't think that Ford extended any of the provisions on these to make it a recall It's always worth checking with your local Ford dealer

They should have bolted the door stop/pull rod facing the front fender instead of mounting it with a shear force on the rivets toward the driver seat.

I have a 2020 ford Escape with 50,000 miles on it It started doing this about 3 weeks ago. I called Ford and it is NOT Covered under warranty until it is a recall which there are now 400,000 plus 2020 Escapes reporting this problem It is ridiculous that I have to pay out of pocket for this repair. I' bought his brand new and have had it in for recalls 4 times . It had 10,000 miles on it and the back shocks had to be replaced. I've contacted Ford and the National Safety and NOTHING has happened Im driving with a window that isn't working and a door on the drivers side not working IT's out only vehicle

Why isn't this a Safety Recall dude; It's just a Safety Service Message? Is it just because it's just a noise and the window won't roll down? That's just nuts and not your fault. This is why you get rage from customers, you're the first person we see. I know you care but your hands are tied. What can you do really according to the chart for time allotted and you have to burn your own time to do anything correct or the customer pays. I blame GM, Ford...the lot of them. If you drive with the window stuck down in the rain isn't an issue to them. Chrysler was bad with this for me. TSM for ball joints, put a heat shield on. Wheel falls the flarn off as it becomes an SSB and a later recall and lowering them 2". Now we have the 2015 Escape and it's just been a damn mess since day 2. It's not you, the fixer. The door has high bolsters for safety, so much that they have a convex mini-mirror so they know you can't see out of these things. Now the door is broke...
