In which I build a dynamo test bench, and proceed to test dynamos and the wiring harness and the regulator. I do make progres! There are frustrations, but generally every day is a school day and I am learning all the time, or at least trying to remember back to the time before about 1973 when all motor vehicles had dynamos, and I used to service them all the time. You forget a lot in 50 years!!
Phil, back to snow and cold in East Yorkshire!

We can have the best intentions, plans and tools. But we cannot always foresee the unexpected and or unexplained. Mt horizontal bandsaw played up this morning and refused to operate. Did the usual checks and nothing. So, disappointed I made a brew, came back to it and pressed the button in the lunatic style of trying the same thing over and over again and bugger started up. Then, six cuts later the dratted blade snapped! At least your dynamo isn't computer controlled and much the same for my bandsaw and that means we always have a small chance of winning the day, just a case which day and when!

This was very interesting. It has been a very long timesince we looked at a dynamo and have forgotten everything we thought we knew. I think you ended the week further on than the start of the week so I would take that as a win

It was a win really, and as I get more into the subject of dynamos new ideas come as to whats wrong with them, I have the ideal piece of test equipment, a 30v windy megger for shecking insulation resistance, and the first time I come to use it I find that it doesnt actually work!! It is in pieces in front of me as we speak! Phil

Life's one big two steps forward one step back, if things were that simple we would just be bored and we would have nothing to tickle the grey cells, another good lesson on how dynamo's work.

I suppose you are right, and after all electrics are the one area in which I recieved a full apprentice training and 3 years of college too! The problems may be caused by the fact that when I was servicing dynamos in the early seventies, they were only a few years old and were therefore very reliable and easily repaired, now I am nearly 70 and they are 50 years old, and insulation does gradually lose its integrity!, But wait, I have another idea.........................

Afternoon Phil interesting video nearly a another step nearer are you going to register it for the road?

I want to, but unfortunately DVLA has become much more uncooperative since someone in power to;d them they were applying the rules incorrectly. In times past it was enough to provide DVLA with a registration number and a chassis number, and they would search out the records. Today you have to have documentation that ties the registration number to the chassis number and I haven't got any, in fact that would be only on the log book, and I dont have the log book, so I can't apply for a replacement. Stupid, but apparently if you join an owners club, they can date the vehicle and if it all chacks out, DVLA will apparently take their word for it that the tractor and the reg number go together. I have obtained details from the ERYC archive which tells me that a Fordson with this reg number was registered in 1955 to a local farmer (two in fact with consecutive reg numbers) but I have nothing to PROVE that my tractor is that Fordson!
