Had a customer years ago with a Chrysler lean burn system that had a surge under cruise. Had it to several shops and was told everything from a carb rebuild to a new engine. I took on a test drive and adjusted the power valve to slightly enrich the primary metering rods on the thermo quad carb. The car ran beautifully, no more surge. Customer said the car never ran that good when it was new. When he got the bill for $50, he had a fit. "How can you charge me $50 when all you did was turn a little screw?" I said "It's $5 to turn the screw, $45 to know which one to turn." He paid the $50 and gave me a $20 tip.

The statement you made in the beginning about clearing the codes the process that you have is the exact process that should be done each and every time I also would recommend on any vehicle doing a history of all the computers that are in there or a health report this way you know where everything is at it's a good practice because of these vehicles get newer the computers are doing more and more interacting and affecting the operations of another computer

Great work, and I agree, always check the obvious first. I sometimes get frustrated with Eric O. over at South Main Auto. He does all these resistance checks, grabs the schematics, etc. I'm usually saying "LOOK at the connector first". Then he's do 20 minutes of diags and then go to the connector and say "Well there's your problem". Even when he sees that, he'll go through and say "well, we need to go through the process". I'm more "OK, Connector wire is broken, fix it, and see if that was all the problem, or if there is more, you KNOW the wire is broken, so it has to be fixed anyway"...but, I'm not him, and it works for him. I still like the channel.

At around 15 minutes into this we talk about the weather pack seals and everything else you have to remember you weren't the one that disassembled this engine you weren't the one that may have been a wild animal that's yanking away at the plugs and everything else and we also do know because of the age of polycarbonates do harden up and sometimes the plugs don't want to come off and the locking tabs could also break and snap off also this is the dilemma that happens all the time whenever there's any kind of major motor work after the vehicle has x amount of time on it or a lot a lot of miles due to the heat that's generated inside the engine area and also outside elements so you are absolutely right in explaining what happens to these plugs but in the beginning it also could have been someone that was very brutal taking this whole thing apart not using any TLC

A few year back I purchased this truck recently It would run fine for a mile or so the a a sudden major power loss. first thought was cad converter clogged, checking I learned there is 4 of them. My friend saw that the water pump was leaking. So I have no Idea what the previous owner upgraded or if any and since the oil pump is right there I am putting the high volume pump on as well. There was no timing issues but I have never had any experience with this motor, much less phasers. I have decided since its right there and to avoid having to basically do this again is to replace the timing chain, phasers and all. I want to know should I replace the phasers or reuse them and is this product a good replacement I am also buying E-cowlboy Crankshaft Positioning Tool For Ford - Timing Chain Installation (cam phaser locking + crankshaft positioning) however I still have no idea what could be causing the sudden and massive drain of power. we haven't really started to tear down the engine to do all this yet, I did see a lot of oil on exhaust pipe when i crawled under and can see it on back of engine not sure if blown head gasket or leaking from valve cover and will not know until we start removing parts to install timing water and oil pump. a year ago i had to replace the oil sending unit adapter plate because where the oil sender screwed in was cracked and a larger chunk was missing this happened after changing the oil not sure if it was pressure but i was nowhere near that to brake it the oil filter was by front bumper, That was a job in it self to replace but after that it ran great, . one more thing before losing power all the gages in the dash would stop working like a short somewhere then would start working again, time varied when it would start working again and if it sat all night the battery would be dead next morning, Im in no rush to do this I really like this truck and the power it has when I had to pull friends out of ditches, I never felt any strain or had to jerk anyone one out and these where very deep ditches on bot sides on a narrow road. pulling them out at a 90 degree angle I just locked them in put it in drive and never touched the gas and they came right out. I didn't expert that when I first got the truck I purchased manual locks and they are still in the box every other automatic locking hub I owned I had to put manual locks on them because they sucked, I cant say that about this one Diamond Power Timing Chain kit Replacement for Ford Expedition Navigator 5.4L V8 SOHC 16v TRITON 97-00, Opens in a new tab Diamond Power Timing Chain kit Replacement for Ford Expedition Navigator 5.4L V8 SOHC 16v TRITON 97-00Diamond Power Timing Chain kit Replacement for Ford Expedition Navigator 5.4L V8 SOHC 16v TRITON 97-00 $98.18$98.18

Love the channel. If you'd were in my area I would definitely bring my fords to you. Is there an easy way to see if there is a Ford independent shop near me?

Totally appreciate the video! Did I hear you say that the cam position sensors NEVER fail? I got the code last week, swapped out both sensors, the trouble code went away immediately BUT then I took the truck on a road trip about 250 miles and on the way home CEL / same code came back. Now I’m wondering if I broke the wires. How do you repair those connectors?

The sensor's never fail yes, your concern is the timing set not wires or sensors.

I have seen the same stretchy wires on a Duramax with perfect insulation. The copper broke just from vibration.

210K on my 04" F150, I have a bad follower on #3, other issue I see is quite a bit of fine copper (where did it come from?) washed onto the timing cover inside front of timing cover in front of r/s phaser. I will need a cam as well. help me decide: 'do I : do minimum repairs to get it on the road? or pull it, do a complete rebuild? the rest of the truck is in very good condition, including the trans.

I ran into this same issue on a 94 Chevy C1500 truck I had. Intermittently the engine would all of a sudden start running really bad and almost stall then it would run great again. Hooked a scan tool to it and started messing with wires and found that the ones that went to the temp sensor connector that tells the computer the engine temp was causing the problem. The prongs were spread apart too far. Pushed them back into place and that took care of it. When the connection was broken the computer was seeing a stone cold engine so would configure the fuel and timing which made it run way too rich.

Changing valve covers on 2006 escape 3.0 left side is clean but right side looks burnt and and scaring on lobes. Any idea what causes that.

Great video! Sometimes it really does end up being the simple basic things. How many parts changers would be putting sensors in it and then a PCM and still have the problem?

The cam sensor location are in a great location when I bought my truck the famous tensioner pulley gave out and drilled into the front plate on the engine and I was tired after 14hr at work so I had a place do the belt and tensioner pulley I get it back and the place that did it busted the sensor off by accidentally hitting it while installing the belt it literally just crumbled to the touch

So for my cam position on bank vct err 2 it's reading 11-15 and bank 1 is at 5-10. So does that mean the timing is off?

Bryan!!!!! my 2001 f150 4.6l 2v new crate motor did it myself not a mechanic by trade but i learn as i go thing and spend many hours on your youtube video's i can be assured by your consistency and various applications are to the tee but im stuck with a dtc p0320 using a O'reilly's scanner as you know has limitations on functions and had codes p0340 ,p0714,p0715,lean codes cleared those after installing new fuel lines that leaked ,new injectors, vacuum lines oh,scanner loses communication with PCM? I also had problem with new PCM theft lock out so replaced it with the old one so atleast it would start. now cleared all codes to immediately get only p0320 again.I did do a smoke test for vacuum leaks with no obvious detection and furthermore changed from the cast intake manifold to the plastic version if that makes any difference idk but torque spec's may vary? ANY GOOD RECOMMENDATIONS? thanks!
