Perfect Brian! You must have read my mind. I have a 2020 Edge that just turned 30,000 miles. I'm in talks with a local shop to install a catch can. Been well below zero here. He said he'll do it when the temps get into the 40's. My idea with the trans, is to drain the trans fluid, measure it, and put the same amount you took out back in. That way you don't have to mess with the leveling plug as most of don't have a lift. Doesn't seem there would be much loss of fluid from vapor.
@FordTechMakuloco11 ай бұрын
Right but my concern is was fluid at the correct level before servicing.
@eighthof811 ай бұрын
@@FordTechMakuloco Thanks for your input Brian. But like you pointed out, the trans vent wasn't covered in fluid. If it was, then I'd be concerned and use the leveling plug. But most of us DIYer's have front ramps only, so when we drive it up on the ramps, the trans is not level, and wouldn't get an accurate reading Got an estimate from a Ford dealer before seeing your vid. The dealership wants $150.00 for fluid change. I'm not tight, but that's too much.

I replaced it, but Ford dealer still wanted $400 to pair it with the diff module. OK. Job done. I do not have a lift so not sure I was completely level. Removed front left tire for visibility into the leveling port. Heated up the oil in the oven to 150F to save some time. Used Forscan to monitor the temp (185F=85C). Put aluminum foil over the hose and cross member. The oil smelled completely spent. Same color as you found. Might do it again in 20k given the big initial interval.

Thanks, Brian. I just did this on our 2020 AWD Escape with 1.5 I3.Its definitely a pain, but not that difficult. The hardest part is getting the trans up to temp. I used ForScan with a harness made for it - $35 on Amazon. The issue for me was that I let the car idle, which tool a very long time to come to temp. BUT, before I was done, the car did the auto shut off, which puked out a couple quarts through the level plug! TIP- After adding the new fluid, close up the level plug and drive for about 20 min in sport mode. I got back reading 200 F and removed the driver front wheel (lowering the body back down to ride height) to more easily access the level plug

We have a 2020 Escape with the 1.5L Ecoboost. We bought it used a couple of years ago, with roughly 20k miles on it. It's the SEL model, very comfortable, drives really good, and gets good fuel mileage. However, the Ford dealer we bought this from has not mentioned anything about the trans fluid needing to be changed, and we just had the engine oil changed at about 35K miles. Glad I caught this video. We are in our mid to late 60's, and do not want to have to buy another car anytime soon. Of course, after we bought the car, is when I heard about the problems with the early Ecoboost engines ingesting coolant. I did ask the service manager at the dealership, and he said they haven't had any problems with the newer models. Are we sitting on a ticking time bomb???

Hey guyinnc, I am an all-Ford man. I used to be a Ford technician before the military. If you don't have an extended warranty and plan to keep this car. I recommend a warranty. I have one for my wife's 2015 Edge and it only has 63000 miles on it. I know it's like an extra car payment for 30 months, but if anything major goes wrong, you're covered with a $150 deductible. I have one through Endurance. The Ford ESP warranty is extremely expensive, and they can only be bought when the car is under the factory warranty. If the engine gives you trouble, get it fixed and trade it in on an older pre 2019 V-6 3.5L. They last forever if you take care of them and service it properly. My last Edge 3.5L V-6 had 234,000 miles on it and ran just fine with no problems.

thanks, probably a good idea. But he can change/flush it for us for about $350 if we want. Maybe I should forward him the link to this video.@@kevinleukhardt9560

Excellent video thanks. I would like your opinion of an alternative procedure, something we used to do years ago. In an effort to remove all the dirty fluid and replaced with new, what if you removed the transmission to radiator tube and put the trans end into a bucket. Place your funnel into the fill/vent port with several quarts at the ready. Start car and as the fluid gets pumped into your bucket, you continue to fill the transmission. You would do this until you get clean fluid being pumped into your bucket then shut down engine. Compare how much was pumped out with what you put in and top up and check level as necessary. I would appreciate your input on this.

I did the same procedure on a 2022 Maverick but ran into a small issue. There's a white plastic disc inside/near the bottom of the rubber fill/vent tube with a tiny 1/16" or so vent hole in it. Ended up removing the hose clamp/fill tube to remove that disc., otherwise the fluid won't refill through the funnel.....just backs up and sits there. I left it out, reinstalled the vertical fill/vent rubber tube and have had zero issues with any fluid burping up or anything since. Not sure if that was something that was accidentally left during the assembly process or something included on the newer model 8Fs but was pretty annoying when I went to refill.. Nonetheless, thanks for the video an sharing the info!!

only IF you didn't leak some or level was previously set correctly... it's better the way he did so you are 100% sure to have factory fill level. If you still want to do it your way be sure the transmission is COLD when draining. Otherwise measurement error will happen (hot fluid is less dense than cold in the bottle) and that's bad.

@elcouz The plan always was to do it cold, exactly for the reason you indicate.
