I just have to give you mad props. I have a 2000 Mazda B3000 and with your videos I installed new head gaskets, installed new reman’d heads and gaskets all the way up. Along with new timing cover gasket, crank seal, timing chain and gears and put it all back together. Fired the first try and completely fixed my issue of my combustion gasses finding their way into my cooling system. Your videos are incredibly detailed, DIY friendly and very helpful for any home garage mechanic. Thank you for all your help, you’ve earned a supporter and sub for life. 👍🏼

it's 2020 and I'm now just seeing this video. And I can tell you that I've stumbled my way threw and entire head replacement on an 1999 mercury sable, vulcan motor - which is basically the same as this car. I had to stumble threw this job and going the extra mile on replacing all the gaskets I could service while even taking off the timing cover/timing chain replacement, and oil pan replacement, and water pump..etc. I swore I'd never do this job again, and I drove this car with the rebuilt top end of the motor for another 30k miles until either a gasket burst or the block cracked - as cylinder number 2 had fluid penetrate the cylinder. It left my ex stranded (who borrowed the car to drive a few hours away ) and we had to tow the car 200 miles home. At that point, I wasn't going to rebuild the car again and we junked it. but I wish I saw this video before I made that huge job.

Hi, My name is Ken and first and foremost I would like to give you kudos for these videos they are very informative. Sorry for the long comment just want to be for sure my engine block is not cracked. I am doing this same repair on my vehicle 2002 Sable 3.0 Vulcan. My question is my vehicle ran hot on me, shut it off and had it towed home. I checked the oil no mixing, started it up but it had a miss, i put water in the reservoir some bubbling but not shooting out of reservoir, performed a compression check #1-180, #2-90, #3-180, #4-70, #5-80, #6-165. Readings didn't change after 2 squirts of oil. So I pulled the heads no coolant in the cylinders but #2,#4,#5 intake valves leak excessively (I poured water into intake and exhaust ports). I am also going to do the timing chain cover gasket (leaks on left side of motor if looking at front) and also oil pan gasket but is there anywhere that these blocks crack dont want to spend the money if I need a motor.

I'm a big fan of your videos on KZbin, your videos helped me replace the damaged head gaskets on a 2001 Ford Taurus SES ohv. The vehicle leaks oil from what appears to be the rear main seal. I've read on Ford Taurus forums that the only way to replace the rear main seal is to either remove the engine or remove the transmission. Do you know of any shortcuts to remove and replace the rear main seal without removing the engine or transmission? The reason I ask is because I can get access to about half of the rear main oil seal by removing the crankshaft cap closest to the torque converter. Can I cut the old oil seal, yank it out, then put a new oil seal in and somehow glue it back together using epoxy or special rubber glue? Thanks for your help John

Anyway of telling the difference between a leaking head gasket and a warped head/engine? My 02 flex fuel Taurus overheated pretty good and now the coolant in the coolant reservoir bubbles(only seems to bubble after the engine has been running and/or I remove the coolant reservoir cap) without overheating. Their is no white or blue smoke form the exhaust, but the engine does miss fire like it wants to stall.
@jesusgutierrez1446
@jesusgutierrez1446 6 жыл бұрын
You have to take it off and check it with a straight edge. But for sore you have a failed gasket that is leaking compression to the coolant, the question now is, if you have a warped head. And the follow up question is, can it be machined

Hello, I have found your video extremely helpful. I purchased the engine gasket set in the description and now I'm putting the motor back together. The Gasket set is Fel-pro and I noticed that it isn't exactly the same as the original ford gasket (it doesn't have the tabs on the top of the gasket that protrude inward towards the intake manifold and it doesn't have the tab that fold inwards on on the face of the gasket like the original gasket did). If you pull up the Fel-pro 95372 it has 2 voids on the face of the gasket instead of a protruding tab. Should I cut the gasket and make a tab? I'm confused and looking for a hand thank you.

Hello again. I still cannot get the exhaust manifold back on the cat converter correctly. It seems impossible. Is there something I missed in your video? The cat converter near the radiator has a flange on it with bolts coming through. You simply set the exhaust manifold down inside that. and put the bolts back on the flange and tighten. I have a gap and you can see the threads of the bolts in between where the two meet. But there is no way for it to go up any farther?

Nice job. You're a Godsend. I replaced the headgaskets on my vulcan years ago. I could have saved a lot of time if your video was available then. Can you tell my why these things fail so frequently? I have a buddy with a Ranger 3.0l ....same thing. It looks like the fire-ring cracks near the exhaust valve area and combustion gas starts working on the fiber material eventually getting to a water passage. I would like to know how to prevent/delay this from happening again on my car. The first ones failed at 220k miles. It's sneaking up on 350k now and the next time they fail....the car is going to be scrapped....the body is getting too crunchy to put money into her.

Brent Richardson At 220k I would say that is good. I know the original gaskets were revised. Also this is before the great multi layer steel gaskets. The ones I have seen have failed from sticking thermostats overheating them. This particular one was a valve seat issue which they are just known for poor design.

Also You didn't mention about the heads if you sent them out for freshening up or you just cleaned them up there at the shop, plus you did mention checking head surface for warpage with feeler gauge. If you can let me know if you had to set to TDC before and the other issues that would be very helpful. Thank You in Advance.

I have 97 taurus with suspected blown head gasket that I am debating whether to fix. wife's grandmother's car. about 120K on it I think. we just started using in recently. wife was driving on trip and had lack of power up hills. When she got to where I was I looked it over and it has milky oil, gases in coolant bottle, and lot of white quickly dissipating smoke (steam?) out exhaust. I just don't want to do the work to find cracked block, warped heads or something that makes job much more expensive. She had mentioned in past no heat. I think I may have added coolant and perhaps bled system, don't remember. I know the MIL was on at times. wife doesn't recall whether the overheat light came on at all. Any thoughts, or do you just have to rip apart to see? This happened last Thanksgiving and when I went home to where we left car last year, I tried to look over. It started right up with a jump. But is it shot from sitting in this condition-water in engine?

Just a shot in the dark, since it was my problem anyway, check the idle air control valve. It's super easy to reach. Take it off and clean it. If it works, it works. If not, you didn't waste too much time.

Hey I just did my 3.0 ranger ffv, I worked as an auto mechanic for just over 4 years now and know these motors pretty well but anyway after the head gasket (and new head castings with valvework done at machine shop) I developed a very slow, small coolant consumption problem and it’s very annoying, I want to run a radiator bubble test with the color changing fluid to hopefully narrow it down to the intake, btw aren’t you supposed to tighten the heads WITH the lower intake in sequence because I see with the 4.0 ohv cologne engine the haynes manual says to do this, only because the way the engines are set up are pretty similar on the top end

on my 99 3.0 ranger no compression in cylinder 5 I think I got the same issue one of the valves ain’t seating properly or burnt valve the trucks only got 150k on it to I’m wondering of just replacing the driver side head that has no compression only because the passenger side head has great compression I don’t think I wanna mess with that one what do u think I should do should I just do both?

Hey Brian, do you have to set the engine to #1 TDC when putting new tensioners in a ford v6 4.0 sohc, I heard someone say this but I thought they were wrong, figured I'd ask the man.

Thanks. I had a hell of a time unplugging the O2 sensors. It's always the electrical connectors that seem to be glued together. Seems all of them release by pushing in on the locking tab EXCEPT for the power steering connector where you have to pull the locking tab down and be careful not to break it..

I'm going to be dropping the y-pipe assembly from the exhaust manifolds in order to replace the oil pan gasket. I understand there is a steel ring gasket for the rear cat to rear exhaust manifold. Is there a gasket for the front cat to front exhaust manifold?

I have followed your procedure for this, but all I did with mine was change the lower intake gaskets. Of course I pulled the rocker arms off with the push rods, cleaned everything down and buttoned it all back up. Now I am loosing compression in one cylinder when I crank it over. I got it to start up for a minute but I shut it down quickly since it was running really rough. What on earth did I do wrong?? Will a poorly seated rocker arm cause this problem?

I followed this step by step. But when I put the exhaust manifold back to the cat converter I have like a 3/8 inch gap where the two meet. Is this supposed to be there or do I not have it on all the way? My car is running fine now but I have exhaust smoke coming from this connection.

Thanks. I figured it wasn't supposed to be there. I pushed it up as far as it will go and the when tightened the gap is still there. I put a used cylinder head which had the exhaust manifold already connected so perhaps they changed something from the 2002 to the 2004 model. This is a great video which was incredibly informative and really helped me fix this vehicle. I just have to figure out what went wrong on the exhaust manifold.

Hey, I have to say you did a very thorough walk through. I have a couple questions for you though. 1. Is this the same 3.0 as in my Ranger? It looks to be but wanted to make sure. 2. On mine I have recently had a coolant leak which looks to be coming from the head gasket below the front freeze plug on the passenger side, I haven't done a compression check yet. If it passes a compression check, do you think I could get away with out having to get the heads resurfaced? Also how long do should it take from start to finish?

Yes this engine is the same just mounted different. I would take a close look at the front cover they leak from the top of the cover at the pressurized coolant passage and spray all over and or seep making you think it is the heads. Heads are very uncommon for coolant leaks, pressure test and look very close at front cover. I also have a video on the front cover on these engines you can reference.

I took the alternator bracket out of the way, cleaned the whole area and sprayed cable clean, & pressure tested. You can see the small leak start in the little lip between the head mating surfaces, then run down the groove. A few Co workers have recommended stop leak, but I don't trust that. If it's going to plug that whole, what else would it plug? Like I said I haven't got to pressure test it yet to see if it's also getting into cylinder #1, do to not having the time, but it is in the plans before weeks out. It is a slow leak, & only when under pressure.

I though the housing stopped where it curls down, didn't realize that it has a little more meat to it. Thank you I will indirect further.
