I’m old school. Changed many plugs in my time. Worked on many cars and lots of big block muscle cars. Have a 97 Lincoln Town Car with the 4.6L engine. Was checking my maintenance schedule and found Lincoln recommended changing the plugs at 30K miles. Mine has 50K on it so I figured I’d change them. Went out opened the hood and thought OMG. Figured I’d just have to pay a shop. That’s something I’m not to crazy about because of cost but mostly because I’m very particular about my cars. Decided to look on U tube and see what I could find. Watched 2-3 videos before yours and then came across yours. There was one other video equal to yours for information, knowledge, quality of camera work and knowledge. Excellent video, after watching I’m confident I should be able to change my plugs without any problems. I’m going to get a set and do my best to follow your directions and with my experience should be able to do it. If all else fails I’ll get the one I start on in and have to take it to a shop lol. Excellent video - Took me 4 hours. changed my plugs & coils yesterday and found it was a real challenge to blow all the dirt out of the plug area. In addition to using an air compressor I made a tube attachment for my home vacuum to reach inside the holes. Car runs nice and smooth.

@@JosephArchebeque-he5lzThere’s no time frame on how long they last. If you have a misfire you’ll know it. Replace the coil and plug. If you’re lucky you’ll get a check engine light and your OBDII scanner will tell you which cylinder is at fault. I hope this helps.

This video was exceptional and helped me change my plugs and coils. I’ve never touched maintenance in a car before today. Keys: - Have a variety of extensions - 1/4” drive is better than 3/8” drive for this job - the more teeth the better as you’ll have very little space to swing it - Use magnetic spark plug socket with built in swivel - use a torque wrench to get 22-25 ft lbs - use a baby wrench to get bolt of of #7 coil: nothing I had worked for a socket, but I hear a flex adapter may help - don’t remove fuel rails - #4 sucks no matter what. Try every combo of extensions/adapters/ etc until you get something that works for you. This is when the tooth count on the socket really matters.

For the #4 plug I had to remove the throttle body on my Explorer with the 4.6 V8. Once I had that off removing the plug was much more doable.

My throttle body needs a good scrubbing anyway.I got a misfire on 6 which i believe is on the drivers side, 2nd closest to to the headlights. But I'd like to knock them all out. Had this happen to me in a grand Cherokee but i was close to my garage. today i was 50 miles from home. expedition magically cured itself 10 miles from home. the shaking at idle was bud, thought it was a vaccum leak until my radio that is BT connected to my obd 2 told me i had a missfire on 6...I primed all the parts to come tomorrow and hope to tackle everything but especially the front 3 on either side then do an oil change.

@@johnonthecooldoe6338 the throttle body was easy, just 4 bolts to take it off. Yes, new plugs and coils will really help your engine run a long time trouble free. Just be sure to torque everything down properly and use OEM parts if possible.

@@LA_Commander This is kinda a beach toy so i got the $30 for 8 top rated coil packs off amazon and the ngk spark plugs. I'm going to grab a thermostat and seal from auztozone. I did a distilled water flush with the chemical one time and water 5 times but never changed the thermostat.

Good work! I have a 99 f150, that I bought new. 5.4L. Dealer tuned at about 85,000, as it started misfire. Didn't run right after that. I removed the plugs myself. 5 of the coils were used brand X's, 1 plug was wrong heat range, and brand! I called Ford... Never heard back... So.. I do all my own repairs \ maintenance. I am retired journey man general mechanic.

i worked at a Ford dealer in Canada, i have never ever heard of a dealer replacing random/single plugs.. we wont even work on a vehicle unless we replace the entire stack of plugs.. the coils are a different story.. i would be weary of dealers and i would file a complaint with fords head office about that dealership they should not be replacing random plugs it only causes more issues down the road.... im still a mechanic but i own my own shop i still refuse to replace just one.. its all or nothing because i cannot be certain the plugs that were not changed wont fail shortly after.

Very well done video, this will help many to do it themselves for a reasonable price...I changed my plugs at about 125,000 miles. Before I took the plugs out, I had to clean out the spark plug well because the compressed air only removes loose and dry debris. I used a chopstick ( a pencil would be too thick because you need to be able to turn it inside the well) and wrapped a small strip (maybe the last 1/2 to 3/4 inch of the chopstick) of heavy duty paper towel or mechanic's shop towel on the end of it secured with masking tape. Then I put a drop or two of spray lubricant, just enough to moisten the paper, but not so much that it wets the masking tape because then it dissolves the glue and falls off. Then I "mopped" the bottom of the spark plug well with the chopstick to get all the dirt, oil, bug parts, and other crud that were down there. The moist towel will make most of the stuff stick to it so you just mop a little then bring it out and clean it off and repeat until the well is clean. If you don't clean the wells, then any junk down there will fall into the cylinder when you remove the plugs and could cause many, expensive, problems. {Use a good flashlight or shoplite that is bright enough to see down there!}

Great video like all your others! I changed all 10 of my spark plugs and coils in 2.5 hours on my 6.8L 2V. The job isn't bad if you have an assortment of extensions and the GearWrench swivel. Also, I was able to get a torque wrench on every plug and you do not need to remove the fuel injection rails. Out came NGK plugs and in went Motorcraft plugs and coils. The plugs were torqued to 23 ft-lbs. The big Ford runs like a beast now! Thanks Brian!

@@svenandaas8781 I bought my F-250 when it was 20 years old and had 195,000 miles on it so I don't know the history. The truck ran good and was reliable for the two years I owned it. I ended up buying a 2009 F-250 4x4 with another V-10 but this one is a three valve. Great truck!

Thanks for the great tips. I just replaced the plugs in my 2007 E250 with a 5.4 two valve engine. I had been dreading doing this job as it looked like it was going to be a nightmare. After removing the doghouse, air cleaner housing and hose the only other thing that had to be removed was the PCV pipe. I'm glad I had a huge assortment of 3/8" extensions as I had to use different combinations to reach the plugs. A few of the plugs turned really hard when being removed but I was able to get them backed off a half turn and sprayed a couple shoots of Liquid Wrench (my favorite) and let it set a while. Turned them back in and then they came right out. Made sure to use los of air to clean out the threads and used never seize.Turned out not to be all that hard and I was able to get the torque wrench on every plug.

Great video! My 2001 F150 4.6L had developed a skip at certain RPMs and loads. After several weeks, I finally got a "service engine" light and the ODB-II reader said "Cylinder 5 misfire". I know its 5 years late....but i didn't find this channel till recently but have owned a 5.4 2v for ever and a day now. Regarding the sparkplug threads thing from 97 to 2002 the heads only had 4 threads in them starting in 2003 ford changed the heads to 8 thread heads. My 04 Lightning even under 26 pounds of boost had 8 threads and they never failed. My 02 lightning spit a coil at 12 pounds of boost. I ripped out all of the plugs and used the Lock n Stitch kit to redo all 8 plug holes properly....they never failed again. Also lock n stitch is the superior plug fix kit and is the general go to kit for us in the Lightning community

Very helpful, thank you! All I had to remove was the air intake. The swivel spark plug socket is a must! Installed Motorcraft plugs and coils. Took less than 2 hours. Would have been faster but cleaning out the spark plug area takes time. Make sure you check inside the tube after taking out the coil but before removing the plug. If I hadn't done that I would have gotten debris in the combustion chamber.

Thank you for your excellent video! The Motorcraft plugs and coil is what I’m using but so good to hear your recommendation for ‘only’ Motorcraft. @@FordTechMakuloco just did this job on my 08 e-150 with the 4.6 and everything went great except for one cylinder, almost like something's in the way. Couldn't get the spark plug socket to drop down in over the plug, it's in a tight spot but I was able to get a mirror over it on an extension and it does not seem to be anything in the way I can see the plug just cannot get the socket to go over it, anybody ever had this problem?

Hey, I just want to express my deepest thanks for sharing tips, this video especially. Saved my butt today. No joke. I remember the day I bought spark plugs, probably 2005, got home, opened the hood and asked "where the hell are the spark plugs?" I had been driving C10s and C20s with carbs till then. Looking into it, I started hearing all the horror stories of stripping out threads just removing them, steel/aluminum bimetal reactions fusing the plugs to the head.... Long story short, it was running fine, decided not to break it. Periodically ran Marvel Mystery Oil through the gas. 200,000 miles later, wouldn't you know, it wasn't running so well. So today, at 228,000 miles, I finally got them changed. Thanks. Most valuable tips: The heads up on individual plug angles, the suggested torque. I set them at 20 or 21.

I have a 2001 f250 5.4 2V Super duty 312,000 miles and still running strong. I pull my RV with it. I had to do 2 of the spark plug repairs in the first year. The kit makes the job super easy. I figure if any more of them were gonna let go they would've by now.

Same motor. Just hit 390K. At 388K changed all plugs- all coils- all vacuum lines. It's purring like a kitten. Cant kill this motor.

I use compressed air to blow debris from the area and after I get the plug out I use my small shop vac with a reduced tiip to suck out any debris that may be left.

Based on research done at the time, you are absolutely right, the Dorman intake could be had for around $225.00, I have no problem with use of aftermarket parts. Unfortunately some additional problems came up and the engine had to be replaced. That's why I made the remark about hard lessons learned, especially when buying a used vehicle...buyer beware. I just found 2 loose plugs that were causing a tapping sound at warm idle. 6 of 8 were seated and tight but two were super loose. I don't know if I just forgot to torque them down when I changed them but I'm glad I was able to find out before I had a dealer go thru and look for the noise.

Nice... Excellent video... had a spark plug blow out August, 17 2017 on number 3 cylinder on a Ford E-150 4.6 L. Had to drill and tap a new threaded insert fix the stripped threads. 1 hour job. I used a Ford Cylinder Repair kit and have 7 plug inserts left that I don't think will need again. best Regards and respects for how you help everyone... Great work!

Thank you so much for the good advice. I had to buy a 7mm 1/4" drive socket built-into a universal to get #7 out from under the fuel pressure regulator. Didn't have to take of fuel rails. Cleaned all coil boots and plug holes, anti-seize on threads, finger set all plugs before over torquing, di-electric grease on coil-plug spring. 1999 expedition, 5.4l 2v. 160k miles, looked like original plugs(I don't really know), I bought it at 106k miles. Took it slow and didn't panic since I saw your video/advice.. 3hrs.. got her done! I found by putting to concrete blocks down and a 6' 2x12 in front of the vehicle gave me just enough height it wasn't bad getting #8/4.

I have the 6.8L in my 1998 E-Super Duty (E450). I'm about to change the spark plugs on it for the first time at 81,700 miles. Shouldn't be too bad to do. I was a little concerned about screwing it up and causing it to eject a spark plug in the near future. I am going to follow your advice and over torque them a little. My other E-Series (2000 E150 Cargo Van) has the weak yet reliable little 4.2L V6 which has been really easy to work on. Currently just over 178,000 miles on it and it runs great.

Good tips, put I've always been told NOT to use anti seize, and not to over torque it as it will ruin the thread also. And always do the plugs when the engine is cold.

If there are too few threads to begin with -- thanks, Ford -- such that engine vibration causes plugs to back out and eventually blow out, why would you use anti-seize to hasten that officially 'undocumented' and unofficially well-documented feature of the Ford Triton? Magnetic spark plug removal tool is the best. The rubber ones let go after a few uses. No more dropping the loose plug back in the hole trying to get it out.

I just installed 8 new coils and plugs on my 99 f150 5.4 2 valve. 181,000 miles. Not for the faint of heart as I needed to remove the drivers side fuel rail to get to the two rear coils on that side. As far as torqing the plugs I read 28 lbs and guessed at it by feel. I used Bosch double platinum plugs on it along with duralast coils that have a warranty. I cannot believe how much smoother the truck runs, how much power is there. There was literally 4 coils that were bobbing up and down because the bolt had wiggled loose. I dont know how the trucks ran pretty well for the 6 years ive had it. Hopefully my mileage goes up a little as well as ive recorded 12.9 on the highway. I love these mod motors. I own a 97 mustang gt as well. Theyre not powerhouses but dammit theyre bulletproof. Love your videos

This video motivated me to pull/check the plugs on my 98 expo 4.6 today. I changed the plugs 40k ago and used motor craft platinum plugs. I noticed three plugs were loose, also all but one were over gapped at 65+ thousands. None of the, showed excessive wear so I simply re-gapped to 52 thousands and reinstalled forgot what a pain the drivers side firewall plug was! Anyway idle is much smoother now I guess attributed to having the correct gap. Thank you again for the great videos.

anajay78 Me neither. As a standard I regap plus 3 days after installation. Some if not all will have already lost their gap. It's like the heat and cool cycles forged them to keep better gap after that.

I just did my plugs yesterday. I bought a new spark plug socket that has a magnet inside and it holds the plug perfectly. I got the socket at autozone. I’ve changed a lot of plugs in my day and I’ve done them on my ford 5.4 years back without the magnetic socket and with these engines it’s so much easier with this magnetic socket.

azntactical did you remove the fuel rail? I was going to but I was able to get it done without removing it. Number 7 (the second from the last on the drivers side) was the worst one. It took like an hour to get it out and about the same time to reinstall. After doing number 7, I thought number 8 was going to be just as bad or worse. To my surprise it was not too bad at all. I just didn’t want to deal with something going wrong with removing or installing the injectors. I’m sure the whole thing would’ve been easier if i did move the fuel rails.

Did it work? Replacing Ll the coils is expensive. Check coils by unplugging themindividually while engin is running. If the engine suddenly runs rough. Then that coil is good. If there is no change that the coil that’s not working.

Another idea I use is adding seafoam in the fuel a week before I do the plugs to break any carbon off so it doesn't beat the threads up when I'm taking the plugs out.

Greetings for the future! Coil packs an plugs have got up in price, BUT I decided not to roll the dice with other manufactures coils. My 98' Expedition is 26 years, runs great and replacing an engine would be the death toll for it. Thanks for all the tips an links.

Great videos ! Love how you support the "why" when doing something. You sold me on the use of anti-seize. Using that and the "over torque" makes sense to this former wrench. I just did my brothers 2004 v10 Excursion. I've heard you and many others say "there is hardly any threads in the head..." I used my inspection cam and was shocked on how many threads were there. Were there different/updated heads by 2004 on the 2 valve tritons ??

If you Use Anti Seize you Change the TORQUE Values Causing Stripped Threads, And could Effect Spark Plug Grounding, Also Can Cause Spark Plug Over Heating.. Spark Plugs these Days come with a Zinc-Chromate Plating to Help with Spark Plug Seizure.. Dont Use Anti-Sieze on Spark Plugs.. Good Luck 👍

As mentioned in replies, the addition of anti-seize would seem counter productive to plug retention. Read that ford also came out against the use. For the most part, a great vid, but it would be great to hear much more related to the use of anti-seize. Putting anything ( Loctite, anti-seize, spray penetrant) on the threads, might lead to seat contamination and result in debris corruption of the threads. Torque settings corrupted by resulting contamination?

Just replaced spark plugs and coils on my 05 excursion 6.8 v10. Went with the bosch double iridiums and love them. All my plugs were loose while taking the old ones out but I put the new ones in by hand just going by feel for when they wanted to stop. Good n tight which I checked with my small torque is around 25 foot pounds. V10s are very hard to torque the back plugs so I did the swag method. Also put high temp antisieze on all plugs and truck is running great. Also some ply wood cut by a hole saw and drilled out so some pex pipe fits through then turn on your shop vac and you can such out all the sand and dirt for almost all the holes.

When I did my 5.4l, I also went ahead and replaced the injectors with some affordable remanufactured ones. I mean, once I had some brackets and rails out of the way, they were just too easy to do at that point; I couldn't resist.

Also be careful with coil mounting screws if you have one of those crappy dorman replacement intakes with the self tapping screws, not hard to screw those up

Small but important issue with re-installing these plugs. Torque wrenches definitely provide predictable and repeatable torque, settings that are much more reliable than "go by feel". Whose "feel" Without a known force being applied or when a set torque is reached the casual DIY mechanic has no idea how tight or lose plugs really are. As important a task as this is its equally important to give newbies advice that relies on experience they probably do not have. Otherwise one of the better Modular Motor plug changing videos. Thanks dude!! I was worried about it being 3valve. Thought I'd have to get a Lysle removal tool. Also thought I'd have to remove the fuel rail and computer. I was so freaked out by these spark plugs ( my sister had a 98 Expy and it needed helicoils put in!) that when I had a misfire on #6, I only changed it and the pack. I pulled off the vacuum line above it for easier access and the nipple came with it"snap". That stupid baro sensor was $73! I'm confident now I can do it. A garage buddy looked it up for me in case I wanted him to do it and the standard was 3 1/2 hours shop time ( ouch! ). I'm not a whimp when it comes to plugs. My old 73 Ford line 6 Super Van burned oil so bad, I'd sit in the van once a week while the wife grocery shopped and take out all the plugs and clean them and put them back in, lol.

I bought a used 2000 F150 with a 5.4, the previous owner broke the ferrel (brass nut) out of the plastic intake at cyl #4...long story short: that intake retails for almost $600.00. Yeah, if you push it down just right, it'll hold with no miss-fire for several miles and then the dreaded miss-fire comes home to roost. Some lessons are hard learned.

If torquing to 20-25 ft lbs, do you think it's necessary to check the torque every 5000 miles? It'd be such a pain but definitely less of a pain than fixing another blown spark plug.

Did the spark plugs and coils in my 2007’ town car. I checked the gap before installing the motorcraft plugs (new higher quality platinum) and they were set to 0.046” from the factory. I think once they start wearing in they will be around 0.054” like from factory. I swear since replacing the older nickel ones (much wider electrode) that were originally in the vehicle when I bought it, with these, I lost some power in certain spots. Maybe it has been distributed differently, since the platinum plugs are designed to optimize acceleration... the car accelerates at like 2200rpm fast and I barely feel it shifting gears. It’s interesting how the electrodes metal changes how your car drives. I’m satisfied and I don’t want to regap them and ruin the coating. Also changing the plugs on these cars is wayyyy fun. 🔧

The only problems I've ever encountered with plugs coming loose on ANY engine, were when Bosch plugs were used. On Fords, I too use only Motorcraft plugs. I've had 'recommended' Autolites cause misfires on many occasions.
