No reason to be mean people. I am sure we all have voices that would make us radio stars if we got the chance. I was forced to take voice lessons in college when I had an injured hand and could not play Piano (yes music major). So at my first and only voice lesson, she said my voice is not bad (nice way to say terrible) but I really need to work on my ear. I told her I had perfect pitch. She said you certainly do not. I walked behind her piano and said hit some notes. As she hit them I named what she hit. She then said wow we have to work on something but I have no idea what it is.

Great information! Just made the switch to forefoot striking and had all sorts of pain in the soleus for awhile. Just keep training and don’t overtrain. Added in some speed work/sprints to further condition the muscle to engage. Thanks for the great video.

Love your channel! A couple of years ago I made the mistake of sprinting in barefoot shoes across a soccer field that had many dips and bumps hidden under the grass. As a new barefoot runner, this shock loaded and badly strained my soleus muscles. Hopefully this comment might prevent someone from making the same mistake.

For me, it has been a gradual and unintentional process of change over the last 18 months. Your video is consistent with my experience over the last 18 months as a newish runner. As I get stronger and better, the aches and pains shift to different parts of my legs. Both of my soleus muscles have lately been going through. I’m just taking a little time off to let them heal and will likely need to reduce my mileage for now until I get used to running this way.

Maybe its because not running tall. That would leas to a stronger bend in your knee which further uses more the soleus and taking away tention from your gastrocnemius.

This is the video I was looking for. I was a heel striker my whole life and I focused on landing on the midfoot/forefoot to help prevent knee pains and injury, but it started causing other injuries in my calves and I thought I was a lost cause. First time I felt a popping in my calf and I took time off, recently I ran 3 miles before the pain made me stop. I can't determine if I half a previous injury that hasn't healed or my soleus muscles are still adapting.

Great video! I've got a question: I´m only wearing minimalist shoes, being barefoot at home and with huarache-sandals to sports since a year ago, but running still causes me soleus pain on my right leg and I think that i´m still weak. At gym I stopped doing calf raises cause it worsened the pain and I change streching habbits, not to focused on the muscle but on posterior chain. I´ve been always running on pavement, can be this one of the causes for this pain? Is there something outside running that can help with this?. I can´t think about running in other way but barefoot. Excuses for my bad english!

After 9 months of fiendishly painful barefoot transition I finally see videos pointing out that the heel is supposed to touch the ground as well as the forefoot. I was keeping the heels in the air. Oopsie. Well, at least now my soleus have stopped hurting but my heels are all sore and super sensitive.
@stephanweaver1960
@stephanweaver1960 6 жыл бұрын
Not "it's supposed to" but rather it's likely as a new runner. I both do and don't depending on the aggressiveness of my run. Most good FF runners do not but then they have a fuller stride than mine and probably yours. It's hard/ more artificial to keep your heel off the ground at 10 mi. Pace vs 8 vs 6
@BloodMeridien
@BloodMeridien 6 жыл бұрын
Stephan Weaver Yes Stephan, when you sprint it's rather likely the heels won't touch the ground, you absolute twat.

I’m so glad you noticed that (heel dropping), but more importantly, I’m more glad you’re really committed to barefooting!! I made the same mistake at first: running really high up on the toes with the heel highly elevated off the ground. I partially ruptured my Achilles as a result! One problem is many people refer to forefoot running as ‘toe running’ which can send anyone into the danger zone because they assume forefoot running involves running high up on the toes while never letting the heel touch the ground which will shred the Achilles and blow-torch the calves! It just doesn’t sustain well. The heel drop is such an essential feature of the forefoot strike, especially for the marathon -- forefoot runner marathoners, like Kipchoge and Tiru Dibaba, have a really low forefoot strike. It ALMOST looks like they’re midfoot striking, until you slow down the motion of their footstrike and it shows the foot landing just slightly ahead of the arch. The net effect of the heel dropping is more energy stored in the Achilles and it provides a smoother interaction with you and the ground, less rigidity, more cushioning. I think it gives you a bigger motor to run faster with better efficiency for sure :D As for the heel sensitivity, it just takes a little time for the heels to play catch up in developing thicker skin and the heel pad will eventually get more dense and toughen up. Before you know it, hopefully no more heel pain for you :D Thanks for the comment my friend! Keep on barefoot strong :D

I've been having this pain for a while as a soccer player. The pain never goes worst, though it goes away after 1 day of rest. When it comes back, it's less painful everytime. Just proper stretching, training and not overusing it will let it have time to become stronger.
@TheSandkastenverbot
