Foreign Volunteers, in the hell of Raqqa

July 2017, east of Raqqa in Syria, fighting rages. A battalion of 12 foreign volunteers takes part in night operations. They are called the YPG International. Led by an Italian communist militant, nicknamed Marcello, they enter DAESH territory every night. Equipped with homemade Kalashknikov bombs and a rocket launcher, they try to advance the front line. Italian, French, Canadian, Spanish, American, German, English, they are between 20 and 30 years old and are not military. They left a peaceful life to come and fight DAESH alongside the Kurdish forces. Journalist, student, deliveryman, fast food employee, social worker, farmers, they come from diverse backgrounds but all share a desire to give meaning to their lives. This journey to the heart of hell is like a quest for these young people. Every moment is precious. Their daily life is made up of solidarity and rich discussions. Humanists, they came to Syria to fight DAESH and defend the Kurdish revolution.

As a former fighter in local kurdish militia (SDF) , I and the rest of our people are grateful to the foreign volunteers who fought for the freedom of our people. I still remember the pictures of about twenty foreign fighters hanging in the reception hall inside our military point in the city of Kobani , they were from ( US, Germany, Australia, Austria, American Latin...) , and even in the city itself, if you visit it, you will find large pictures of these volunteers.

Watching the guy from Baltimore gave me a flash back when he’s getting told to “make the prosciutto fluffy”. Never done anything like this. I rotated back and forth to Afghanistan and Iraq for ten years. You’re on an ODA at a fire base for 6 months working, the next week you’re stuck behind a computer figuring how to do an XL spreadsheet to update medical training requirements or handed a PowerPoint slide for a command and staff brief about immunizations because you’re the most senior guy left. What a come down. Sometimes I couldn’t wait to go back. Most times it was love, hate.

Great documentary and kudos to all who fought and are fighting against ISIS. Also an interesting look at the perception of socialist ideals, which are not inherently bad. Unfortunately, as it turned out, and I experienced it in the former Czechoslovakia, it is a utopia. It is just a transformation of power from one group to another (worse). But I admire the YPG in a way and I don't like that it is considered a terrorist group.

So I'm fighting for a foreign country while their own people in my homeland are in a social hammock as asylum seekers or legal immigrants. If you fall in Syria, Ukraine, etc., it's done anyway, but what happens if you come home as a physical or mental war cripple? Can you then expect the solidarity society to provide you with medical care and financial support? Disability pension at 28 because you have no legs? Everyone should fight where they believe they have to, but without reassurance from their own home country.

If that had happened in 2002 to 2005 , as well as the Ukraine war , I would have gone too. Now I’m over 40, got a family and kids. I know I was a woke idealist before and believe we do something good. But sense and maturity comes with ages. Now, I can say there are a lot of stupidity behind all wars , religions, cooperation, countries, hypocrisy, etc… however I wouldn’t mind my son going to war and fight for what he believes is right.
