Lyrics:
I've gotta take a little time
A little time to think things over
I better read between the lines
In case I need it when I'm older
This mountain, I must climb
Feels like a world upon my shoulders
Through the clouds, I see love shine
Keeps me warm as life grows colder
In my life, there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
Can't stop now, I've traveled so far
To change this lonely life
I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me (hey)
Gotta take a little time
Little time to look around me
I've got nowhere left to hide
Looks like love has finally found me
In my life, there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
Can't stop now, I've traveled so far
To change this lonely life
I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me
I wanna know what love is (I wanna know)
I want you to show me (I wanna feel)
I wanna feel what love is (I know, I know, and I know)
I know you can show me
Let's talk about love
I wanna know what love is
(Love that you feel inside)
I want you to show me
(I'm feeling so much love)
I wanna feel what love is
(And you know, you just can't hide)
I know you can show me
Oh, I wanna know what love is
(Let's talk about love)
I know you can show me
(I wanna feel)
I wanna feel what love is
(And you know you just can't hide)
I know you can show me
I wanna feel what love is (oh, I wanna know)
I want you to show me

I was in the choir featured in the latter half of the video!! I was 14 years old, and was a part of the New Jersey Mass Choir at the time, which consisted of the adult choir which had a couple gospel records out at the time that were kind of big in the gospel world, and the youth division of which I was a part. When Foreigner wanted to do the video, they connected with our director, Donnie Harper, who brought adults and some chosen youth members to New York to film our parts for the video. It was an incredible experience I will never forget. Being a black gospel choir, it was definitely not lost on us how meaningful it was to connect with a different race on a song like this that would have appeal across color lines. It was a wonderful time.

When all is said and done all we are left with is our memories, nobody can take them away. The automatic association between a piece of music and a time in the past is a powerful one. This song always brings me right back to being a 7 year old kid and the new house we moved to. My life was turned upside down and was 2 weeks before christmas. Santa brought me my first LEGO set and I played for hours while this song was always on the radio. It's a song etched in my mind in the place where I keep my most naturally mood soothing memories that I go to when I feel the need

I’m 81, and the music today is nothing like the music of the 70s and 80s. I met my 2nd husband-who had just about every album from the 70s- in 1980, and we went to so many concerts together that I can’t even count them all. He died of cancer in 2007, but I keep him alive by listening to music like this from Foreigner.

My Mother would listen to this song by foreigner when I was growing up as a child. She passed away on me last year June 2023 . This is definitely one of her favorites. I play it from time to time and just takes me back to the 80s and 90s. The saddest thing of all, this was the last song she listened to the night before she passed, as if leaving a message.

Thank you for sharing. I am 46years old now and I have been single my whole life because 21years ago i walked out of the woman I loved so much, one who was the love of my life. I was 23 and she was just 20. I was scared, maybe I didnt know much about what love is. She went on in life and got married to another man. She had 4 children. Her marriage was an abusive one and led to separation some years later. A month ago a friend gave her my number and she did called me..after 21 years. All my life was in pain and regrets that I missed her..I told her i just found someone and I am getting married couple of months time in November this year. I was looking for her for 21years and waiting for a chance. It finally came but I'm getting married. When I answered her call, all the memories came back and everything in me felt that love I wanted..we cried both cried tears of pain and grief..she told me she was looking for me all her life n I was the same..we now met but it's too late..I am hurt inside because she was the love of my life...now it's late I'm getting married. Listening to this song means so much to me..it speaks of my life and what I'm going through..

A few years ago I was traveling to work about five a.m. in the morning on Interstate I-95. This song came on the car radio. Suddenly I felt a deep sense of loneliness and sadness. I don't know why, but I loved this song immediately. It made me realize how wonderful and sad the world is now. We all need to show more sincere caring and love of each other, not money or material things, but love for our fellow human beings. God Bless You All.

Happy 40th anniversary (released in the US) to Foreigner's biggest hit and only #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, "I Want to Know What Love Is"! Fun fact, it stayed at #1 in time for Valentine's Day of 1985 before it was dethroned by "Careless Whisper". It kept "Easy Lover" off the top of the Hot 100.

This is one of those songs that I always say it's no surprise became a universal classic hit for three reasons. One, it's quite ironic that it's not a rock song at all in terms of the arrangement. It's so synth-heavy, but I think that's what makes it interesting and unique for a hard rock band. Second, Lou Gramm's vocals are top notch and the gospel choir is the cherry on top. Third, the lyrical content is so relatable. "In my life, there's been heartache and pain - I don't know if I can face it again - I wanna know what love is". I'm sure everyone in this world has felt this way at one time or another.
@mblaster3D

I'm sure that everyone who adventures on the path of love had heartache and pain, but the thing is when you find somenone who shows what love really is and you love that person back everything about joy and happiness is possible to feel. And that music captures that journey like no other.

Same here, Pierre. Lots of drug and alcohol addiction in our family and we lost many people because of it. We actually played this song at my uncles funeral in 2004, who of course, had died as a result of drug addiction. This song is proper music with proper meaning to very many people. People like us.

I remember when this song first came out, I was about 13 years old and my older brother bought the album, I‘m now nearly 50 and this song still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it. So much meaning in the words, love for a person or love for your fellow man/woman, doesn’t matter the colour, creed or race. Far to many haters in this world.

did You know Lou Gramm hated this song when it came out? He hated doing ballads, and he hated not being able to write his own music and he thought this is not "rock and roll". He's definitely changed his opinion of the song over the years, but its hard to believe he did not like this song. It was mostly written by band member Mick Jones.

Lou, I love your voice. This song touches my heart ❤️ in so many ways. I lost my whole family at 11 y/o when my parents divorced. All 13 kids lost 2 parents. My 4 older brother's were kicked out in the street. My older sister and I went to juvenile hall, all the real little ones were adopted out immediately. My other 3 sisters went to a Children's home. We weren't allowed to see each other. So we had Foster homes. Not a good place, and we were made to leave. So much heart ache, and pain we learned to shut our feelings off just to survive what was happening. One day, I heard your song and i broke down and cried for what seemed like forever. I'm 65 now and I've never had a good man. I still listen to your song praying 🙏 God will send 🙏 ❤️ a real man to a heart that really wants to know what love is ... May God bless you AMEN 🙏

I've gotta take a little time A little time to think things over I better read between the lines In case I need it when I'm older Now this mountain I must climb Feels like the world upon my shoulders But through the clouds I see love shine It keeps me warm as life grows colder In my life, there's been heartache and pain I don't know if I can face it again Can't stop now, I've traveled so far To change this lonely life I wanna know what love is I want you to show me I wanna feel what love is I know you can show me (Ooh) I'm gonna take a little time A little time to look around me I've got nowhere left to hide It looks like love has finally found me In my life, there's been heartache and pain I don't know if I can face it again I can't stop now, I've traveled so far To change this lonely life I wanna know what love is I want you to show me I wanna feel what love is I know you can show me I wanna know what love is I want you to show me (And I wanna feel) I wanna feel what love is (And I know) I know you can show me Let's talk about love (I wanna know what love is) Love that you feel inside (I want you to show me) And I'm feeling so much love (I wanna feel what love is) Oh no, you just cannot hide (I know you can show me) Ohh, I wanna know what love is (Let's talk about love) I know you can show me I wanna feel it (I wanna feel what love is) I wanna feel it, too And I know, and I know, I know you can show me (Hold me back if I'm wrong, yeah) I wanna know (I want you to show me) I wanna know, I wanna know, I wanna know (I want to feel what love is) I wanna feel (I know you can show me)
