Women were educated in the Vedic times but after the invasions and colonization the Gurukuls were destroyed and cast system was introduced and prejudice against each other was forced by the British. The people became illiterate and ignorant.

An interesting fact about jyoti rao phule उन्हें अंग्रेज प्रथमतः 100 रुपये पेन्शन देते थे. बाद में बढकर उसे 450 और 550 रुपये पेन्शन मिलता था और आगाखान पॅलेस के जेल में रखते थे. Jyotirao Phule WAS a Christian, a Protestant Christian to be exact "Phule was particularly influenced by the thought of Thomas Paine, whose criticism of the role of Catholic priests in the "Age of Reason" he later emulated and applied to Brahmins." Basically comparing brahmins with Catholics which means that he saw the anti-Brahmin movement in the same way as the Protestant Reformation, a serious mistake. "The impact of the West on Phule also accounts for his fascination with Jesus Christ "Drawing his inspiration from the Orientalist canon, Phule presented the Aryan Invasions as the destruction of a purer indigenous civilisation"..."Phule believed that the lower castes, in order to advance,had to be the beneficiaries of an education comparable to that provided by the missionaries".
