This week there was an incident with FOREIGNERS BEHAVING BADLY IN THE PHILIPPINES and in my recent video I did speak about my reasons for avoiding large contingents of expats in the Philippines. Not all expats are bad but it only takes one to ignite some problem whichever country they are in. I deliberately go out of my way to avoid foreigners when I am in the Philippines unless it's for a pre-arranged coffee meeting or some other friendly chat. It's not worth it for me so if you are a foreigner thinking about moving to the Philippines please consider your options carefully.

You are the kind of foreigner I want visiting the country. Doesn't cause any drama, just enjoying their life, minding their own business, always being mindful that you are a guest, and just being respectful. Most foreigners I see visiting this country has a "I'm richer than thee, therefore I am entitled to treat thee like slaves." attitude.

When my wife and I were married twenty years ago we had planned on retiring in Dumaguete, then it was “discovered” by expats. Now that we’re actually close to retirement we’re looking elsewhere. I avoid drama at all costs.

I’m thinking about moving to the Philippines when I retire, and I can say for a fact, that I will avoid Dumaguete, Cebu, Angeles and the other Ex-Pat spots like the plaque. A quiet spot somewhere in the Province, preferably without any Ex-Pats in the neighbourhood and hopefully with a local Filipina around.

If you're willing to look past the stereotypes you heard from Mindanao, you might find your place there, especially on the northern and eastern side of the island...

Cebu is a big place. Outside the metro you will find plenty of quiet places without any expat communities. But big hospitals, shops, and malls are just within reach.

When in Dumaguete I stay well away from places like Why Not, Bogart’s, Honeycomb, Starbucks and Ground Zero for exactly this very reason. Too many foreigners with nothing better to do than gossip and bitching at each other. Mark should have known better. I bet you he is now banned from entering the premise…I have noticed he has changed location in his last KZbin interview! Time to grow up guys, stop behaving like brats! On top of that, coming out washing his dirty laundry in public, not a very smart move 😊

My personal opinion is that problems arise among people of the same nationality or similar backgrounds once jealousy, competitiveness and envy start to set in….initially all good friends then when the cat is let out of the bag, everything seems to turn pear shaped. This is in the DNA of some and leaving their country behind will not change their attitude to life

As a Malaysian, I visited Philippines in February 2024. I compared price of fuel between the two country. B10 diesel in Malaysia selling for RM2.15/Ltr while B2 diesel in Philippines sells for P58/Ltr. 95 petrol in Malaysia is RM2.05/Ltr and P62 in Philippines. This makes all daily essentials more expensive in the Philippines.

For us Filipinos living overseas we have to abide by the culture, law and standards expected of us be it resident or a tourist and the animosity towards foreigners are far harsher and merciless for us Asians and other minorities. Therefore, the expectancy will be the same for any other country for any person , regardless of their nationality, in a foreign country, to be fair. Respecting the people and the culture is the key and as a guest, WE, all have an abidance we all need to adhere to. A bad impression of you could be a generalization of your entire people to some as these are the truths we live by as well being minority tourists in a foreign country.

I wish that one of the many vloggers in Dumaguete had recorded the Geezer American Expat MMA event. I don't know what the real facts about the fight are. I saw two entirely different stories about it. What I do know is that fighting in public isn't thought very highly of in the Philippines. It's a bad reflection on the expat community. I won't be surprised if one or both of these guys are told that they have to leave the country. It's a shame that some old men can't act like adults.

It is easy Mark the bully has been constrained from hitting his wife now that she is six months pregnant so he has been on edge and the other expat was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is sad that the gossip and profiteering will now ensue as all the vloggers want to cash in on this incident except Reecay and Regular Guy because they are too busy admiring the teenage girls outside the middle school in their uniforms .

It is people with too much time on their hands who have basically not achieved much with their lives (and never will) and get angry over slight insults or perceived injustices - the reality is, if they had achieved things in life, then they would not let little things upset them and there would be no skirmishes. And of course, there are your outright troublemakers who like throwing rocks and should be ostacised.

If you're in a foreign third world country why would you voluntarily engage in physically attacking and injuring another person as this could needlessly put you in big problems with the legal authorities. As a foreigner with no real rights, you're gambling that things are not going to go very badly for you. Committing crimes like this in a foreign land is not very bright, to say the least.

No matter where you live in a foreign NEED to remember YOU ARE A GUEST in that country. Their laws, culture and traditions are important and should be respected. The Americans come in for a lot of criticism in the Philippines does that mean all Americans are A$$holes? Of course not other nationalities have their share of likely candidates. However US citizens make up the majority of the expat population and many of the locals categorise expats as "Americano." I've heard a number of expat vloggers talking about "friends" and these people are other expats they've met in the Philippines. In reality they are acquaintances. Real friendships are formed over years. I've read vlogs where the story goes "I caught my filipina cheating with my friend." Get real..he isn't your friend and she isn't worthy of your time and attention! Take time to get to know the people around you and build trust and mutual respect. Trouble like this isn't that hard to avoid.
