Back in March (2024) when I visited (explored) The Philippines for the first time for a month... I flew into Cebu... then flew to Borongan City / Eastern Samar.. and I rented a car and drove around Eastern Samar and Leyte (Tacloban City) .. The San Juanico Bridge in Tacloban is awesome/amazing. I actually saw it from the airplane while I was flying to Borongan City. It's a beautiful region of The Philippines.

Perhaps even Lay thinks she is Thai or Malaysian after being mistaken for a local so often. To be fair she doesn't really eat pork so that would make her less aware of the ingredients of pork sisig. You two were feeling romantic, booking the Matrimonial Suite 💕

Nice. Seems a lot more tame than Manila. I get what you mean about the beggars in the church. They're just trying to pull a guilt trip on the parishners. Usually churches help these people out, like they have programs to help them out with food and shelter. Anyways looking forward to more from Lay's home province.

The dried fish from Tacloban, Leyte, is delicious - not too salty. A care package of dried fish from Tacloban, Leyte. I like the kind Filipino expressions such as, "I smell delicious dáing (a type of dried fish. Someone is cooking delicious dáing." However, if the dried fish tastes too salty, sometimes, Filipinos might say, "This dried fish is from Hell."

Nice to see you two in Tacloban, my asawa is from Abuyog, she is Waray and our daughter is at Medical School there in Tacloban. Now I am guessing where is Lay from if three hours from there? I am also guessing you are already back in Manila but if not Tom you might find Palo interesting with the MacArthur Memorial where he famously returned. My asawa's grandfather was in the resistance movement during the Japanese occupation and assisted the American forces when they landed along that coast. Hill 120 at Dulag near there is interesting and includes three memorials remembering the Leyte Landings on October 20 1944; it was the first high ground taken and looked inland. If you want to visit Imelda's former luxurious beach property at Tolosa it is possible if you ask around but not on any official tour.

It's funny you mention German because if Filipinos have any European blood from 400 years of European and European-American colonialism it will likely be German or Irish because of the American influence and nearly 70% of Americans having German ancestry. The Spanish didn't really mix that much. In the US a darker skinned Mexican-American will be told by their grandmother that they are related to some great native chief and when they take a DNA test they are 60% German and the rest Mestizo. Filipinos are told the same about the Spanish but learn very few do after a DNA test. It's estimated that 5%-10% have German or Irish blood. Some Filipino scientists claim it could be much higher. Like 30%. Get her a DNA test. Might be interesting. The greatest level of DNA testing for Filipinos occurs in the US but it's only been under 10k total. In a country of over 100 million there is plenty that is still not known about their current ancestry.

Southern Leyte is very nice and alot less people so it is still very quaint and the development hasnt ruined it yet. You two should go down to Padre Burgos and go swimming with the whale sharks.
