In Greece, the "wood" idiom is also used in any form of competition between opponents - literally any form of competition, not just the obvious fighting games where the opponents get hit and hurt. When someone/something is infinitely better than their opponents, we say "Ρίχνει ξύλο στους ανταγωνιστές του" ("Drops wood on its competitors", meaning that it "Spanks its competitors"). 😉

Smell my fingernails actually comes from ancient Greece.During the Olympic Games in ancient Olympia,priests were putting their fingernails in daphne oil mix with other stuff and smelled the ingredients, to get in exctacy and tell who would win the game,so someone could bet on him.The ones that went to the priests and saw them,thought that they were actually smelling their fingernails and thats were that idiom comes from till now.You can find reference on that,even in the Byzantine times.

I've recently started learning Greek, what a great language! It has a strange familiarity to it, like remembering something long forgotten rather than learning something entirely new. Μας το είπε ο Μπαμπάς πολλές φορές στη ζωή μας. Αλλά συνήθως μόνο «Τούβλο! Ε, τούβλο!» Χαχα. Και τώρα, μία άπο τις δικές μου αγαπημένες τέτοιες φράσεις. "Θα σου κάνω μαύρο στο ξύλο!" (Tha sou kano mavro sto ksilo), or, literally, "I'm going to blacken your wood." Thank you for your easy to understand videos. My brother and I learned Greek by speaking it exclusively with our father and going to Greek language classes at our local Greek Orthodox church, but my wife is Canadian and these videos have been very helpful as she learns the language. If you had replaced "wood" with "stick", more people would have understood the idiom. Besides, we don't actually mean "you will eat wood" but "you will eat a piece of wood" that is a stick.

We say you will eat wood, not stick. Wood is the general one for getting beaten up, if we want to specify we say βεργα(stick) for punishment, παντοφλα(slipper) in context with wife/mother etc, κουταλα(wooden spoon) mom to kids, μπατσο(slap/punch) etc.

The Greek word for wood (the material), also means a piece of wood, therefore a stick. Besides, there is also the compound Greek verb "ξυλοφορτώνω", consisting of two parts, the noun "ξύλο" (wood) and the verb "φορτώνω" (load). Obviously, it doesn't mean load sb with wood, but beat sb with a stick.

Βοήθησε βέβαια σε αυτό, και η συγγενική ιδιωματική έκφραση 'σιγά τον πολυέλαιο', η οποία πάλι όταν πρωτοειπώθηκε, είχε εντελώς διαφορετική έννοια και χρήση, από εκείνη που απέκτησε στη συνέχεια, καθαρά από παρανόηση - κι επειδή έλειπε ένα κόμμα, όταν το γεγονός δημοσιεύτηκε στις εφημερίδες της εποχής.
