ILOILO CITY is a thoroughly safe area. It has been declared One of the Ten Safest Cities in Asia. It is safe than Cebu or Bacolod, or Manila where pickpocketers abound. You can strut your cellphone while strolling in the street and no one will bother you. It is a delight to tour ILOILO CITY in the daytime and at nighttime when the artistically installed lights brighten up the beautiful heritage buildings, Spanish-era churches, the well-maintained American-era and Spanish plazas and parks, the public flower gardens (as in the romantic Garden of Love), the classical European fountains, Spanish belfries, monuments, the extensive riverside Esplanades with their kilometers-long winding gardens with red brick paving and trees and flowerbeds; wide avenues and roads ( some dating back to the glorious charming Spanish era days of the 1700s and 1800s). Of course, there are the big luxurious shopping malls where you can stroll and shop to your heart's content without anyone grabbing your cellphone or shopping baggage. There are the hotels , artisanal bakeshop-cafes and pastry shops. The latest attractions are the century-old Spanish-era ancestral houses of the well-to-do that have been repurposed into quaint and charming artisanal bakeshops and pastry shop-cafes (but most of them also serve heritage meals with iconic original dishes from ILOILO, such as La Paz Batchoy, Pancit Molo, Kansi, Tinuom, Arroz a la Valenciana, MoloFresh Lumpia ubud, Villa Arevalo Chicken Inasal, KBL (Kadios, Baboy, Langka; so creamy delicious pork knuckles in pigeon peas and green jackfruit); Empanadas, Yummy fluffy sweet Puto ( not to be missed steamed rice cakes). Of course, theere are the cuisines of other nations -Chinese, Italian, Ametican, German (as in Bavaria resto), Japanese, Indian, Middle Eastern, Vietnamese, etc, and yes, even the exotic Nyonya-Peranakan cusine of Singapore and Malaysia.

@wintersojourn9356
@wintersojourn9356 Жыл бұрын
Pardon my correction🙂, but the sheath is hand carved from native Philippine wood, Bia & the gifter (wife of Alan) said Nara Wood. The entire knife is handmade, one of a kind. But the value of Nara wood alone, I think it is protected now but not sure on that, anyways it’s called the Philippine ebony i think; & that solid 1 piece? thick sheath alone is worth the price of admission. The entire knife must be, well, priceless coz it is given with such friendship & respect.

@wintersojourn9356
@wintersojourn9356 Жыл бұрын
@DoniCato. Oh it very well may be. I wasn’t correcting the Bowie label, but the “leather sheath”. They mentioned in the vlog, & I could observe, that the sheath is made of wood from a native tree of Phil. I think the shape may be a bolo as someone else mentioned, called bolo in Phil, but maybe not those are more long I think & narrower, if I recall correctly, kinda more machete like I think bolos are. But I didn’t recheck that b4 writing this….

I am torn because it is so beautiful & valuable I would mostly want to put it on display at home, but OTOH it has that functional belt “loop” carved into the wooden sheath. It is always prudent to have a knife when out & about, come in handy. Like in car. But ur right the airport wud b terrible, they’d never give it back.

It may depend on which meal. The big gathering of social media content creators with the 2 long tables; they probably requested separate checks (each party paid their own)… If thats allowable in Philippines, I’m not sure as when we’ve been there it is always family eating out together with one check. In USA, asking for separate checks is very acceptable unless it is a super swanky place. The Azul meal, the smaller meet-up, it can always depend on the participants, I think. Nationalities, circumstances, etc. But my best guess is Mr. Alan picked up the tab. (But many many times with the restaurant meals shown on the vlog it is TPL who hosts & pays, unless specifically stated)….Wait. Well at least until they came to Iloilo! Now they’re adopted & such (Perez’ & Neb’s family, etc) TPL HAVE been the guests frequently/lately. But they also host a lot, they are quiet about it.

This may be controversial info. It is dangerous to generalize about Philippine “traditions”. But here goes as im a sharer: I was taught it is Filipino way that if one receives a gift of a knife/letter opener or other sharp, that one must make a token payment to the giver ie 25 cents or a dollar. I was taught that the reason behind it is donething like you will ward off bad luck of ever being KILLED by the giver or someone else with the same sharp object/gift. I don’t know how paying changes anything, maybe you are not “beholden” or owing? But Filipinos are very generous & never ask for anything in return usually. It was weird to me as a kid wen I had to pay my uncle or whatever for my little Swiss knife. But the tradition popped up all the time even after my childhood. When I gifted one of my carnivorous sisters a set of steak knives for example, my mom made her pay me. Guess she’s safe now 🔪
