Turkish language belongs to the linguistic family of Altaic and Uralic. It is very mathematical that you can construct it with adding multiple suffixes. Because in many cases, the suffixes already indicates what the sentence is structured, the word order in the sentence becomes less important, in some cases unimportant. For example, in English, you can say ‘Alex gave the ball’ but you can’t really say ‘the ball gave Alex’. But in Turkish, you can say ‘Alex topu verdi’ which is the most common word order (Subject and Object and Verb) The ball is top in Turkish, u sound in topU is the indicator of an object. So, because we already understand what the object is, we can also say ‘Alex verdi topu’ or ‘Topu Alex verdi’ or ‘Verdi Alex topu’ or ‘Verdi topu Alex’ in Turkish. The bare meaning will stay the same, but the emphasis will slightly change. One will put greater emphasis on the subject, the other one on the object, and another one on the verb. For example, another fundamental difference is in word formation. Simple example: Gözlükçülük means the field of optician. But, we already realize that it gets constructed as such: Göz means eye. Göz-lük means glasses Gözlük-çü means optician Gözlükçü-lük means the field of opticians. Every suffix have certain meaning which will bring more meaning to the core. Another fundamental difference is with Vowel Harmony. I think this gives foreigners very hard time. In very simple terms, it means hard wovels (a, u, ı, o) are followed by hard wovels. Soft vowels (e, ü, i, ö) are followed by soft wovels. The harmony also affects the suffixes. For example: Göz-lük and Kitap-lık. They both have the -lik suffix, but the wovel changed to be in harmony with previous vowel. Another main difference is the pronunciation. Turkish is pretty much written as it’s spoken. It consists of syllables, which there is very simple mathematical rule for pronunciation. it’s good to know these main differences, keep practicing more :)

@timbik11253 жыл бұрын
Burak, there is something wrong with you bro, I also lived in another country for about 23 years then came back for good, by the way New York that is. And I didn’t have any hard time readjusting myself, especially after all those years I repeatedly heard or overheard that all the foreigners need to f..ing go back home. On the other hand, no matter how hard the situation here is, people in this country will share whatever they got with foreigners without ever looking down on them and would never tell them to go back to their f...ing country!! But I understand you don’t worry cause we all know that it’s not easy being a Turk. It takes a lot, and you’ve got none!! Least do us a favor and don’t say that you are Turkish, cause you are NOT...

We love this thread of conversation for one reason. It shows that we all have different points of view, even when we are from the same place. We all should be ok with having conversations explaining why yes or why no to something we like or dislike. Now the trick is to be ok with everyone's perspective. We don't all have to think or feel the same thing. Some people prefer coffee, some others prefer tea, and it should be ok. Burak, thank you for sharing your point of view, and to Tim and csgultekin thank you for sharing your thoughts about his experience. We all walk this life in different shoes, and we all have our preferences, and it is ok. If everyone loved Istanbul, then the city would be even more populated. We left NYC and our jobs in 2018 and many people said (and still say) we are crazy, now we don't make even a 10% of what we used to make back then, we don't have a house, we don't own anything materialistic, just our cameras and our luggage. But we have never been happier. That doesn't mean this is the right way of doing, it is just our way now. But it is not for everyone, and it might not even be for us in 20 years. Thank you all for watching and having this conversation 😊

@AnnabelleJARankin3 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong - it is just media spin.
@mariaandbryan3 жыл бұрын
Yes, we understand about the stares. It is totally different than if someone stares at us in the US. We learned also that Turkish people just stares at everyone lol. It happens where Maria is from (Spain) especially with the older generations. We don't have a problem with us being called black. That is actually what we prefer. What we don't like is to be called colored people or people of color. People of color is supposed to be used to call a collective of people from different backgrounds black (African descendant), brown(indian, latino, and arabs descendant), and so on,. If you called a black person "colored" it is how it was called during the slavery times. We are black, and that's it, nothing wrong with it at all. We have encountered white people who doesn't like to call black people black, but we don't understand why. It is the color of the skin, it is not secret hahaha.

As an American living in Turkey I agree with some of your points. The people are generally friendly and caring, the sites and history are amazing, and learning Turkish has really improved my ability to enjoy my time here. My disagreements are on your portrayal of the US. Health care is more widely accessible in the US, Corruption is lower, unemployment is lower, poverty rate is lower, wages are higher, and QoL is higher. Discrimination is also not the norm in the US. Americans are some of the kindest and the most generous people on the planet. The more countries I travel/live in the more I see what a great and abnormal thing the US is. I can’t speak to your specific life in New York but would love to hear both your stories and discuss. If you stay past the lockdown hit me up, dinners on me.
