I’ve got a lot of good memories of this mall when Time out on the Court was downstairs, hanging out in the food court as a teen. Now I take my kids there to run around in the winter when it’s to cold for the park. They can run all there energy out and never disturb a soul in the 1.5 mil sq ft playground lol

I'm amazed the entire mall is completely accessible so late at night. Even with the arcade open I'd think they'd section off the rest of the place from a security standpoint. Like Sal said you never know what is around the corner...

Back in the day it had a variety of bars and restaurants. In the nineties it was the nightspot. It was a gorgeous behemoth. My brother was one of the builders. Sad to see it graffitied dark and vacant

How many malls are going to look like this when jcpenney goes under. Also there no way I’d pay double digit figures for the mall especially with the millions of dolllars you’ll need for repairs.

Cindy Klenk The only way to take the steam out of Amazon would be to end their generous tax breaks, but they already have seen this occur and they have a solution to salvage themselves: relocate their distribution centres to other countries that have corrupt governments that are thrilled for their improvements on their usually non-existent infrastructure that retains the bare minimum of regulations regarding safety and environmental protections, and buy off the political elite in order to get away with wages that are not even close to a minimum wage for the employees of the region. In these countries people will do anything to survive, even when survival is a loosely defined and deflationary bidding war. Initially they set up shop in the business district for their customer support via email, chat and phone support. The buildings have an image of success for the country, with wages of the college-educated providing earnings that for the majority of their nation appears to be a dream come true, and this assures the political elite continued dominance. However they quietly open up the sweatshops and distribution centres that are horrendous, cheap as chips to locate a deserted former factory or building distribution centres the size of Cincinnati Mall, with lower health and safety standards and focus their inflated costs to build on the construction of their internet and telecommunications infrastructure that is built just for their own structures, and protections for the employees in these facilities would never receive permission to purchase the land, let alone hire employees. I’m in the UK, so I don’t know if America has seen this political bribery, but we are struggling to end the Working Tax Credit System. What WTC does for the Middle and Lower Class workers on the WRAG (Work Related Activities Group) or for those that are legally working but falling below the already weighted down Government’s Cost Of Living figures are given a Government Benefit that provides the worker money from the taxpayers to the workers wages, so a deception is created and the Corporation begins its exploration of alternative and far more lucrative locations for returns. In other words the Corporation is receiving another tax cut by paying their employees a top-up that the Corrupted Government Representatives that receive bribes hides it in Legislation suggested by the PR for these Corporations, allowing them to say during Election Campaigns that Employment is at an all time high. It is very rarely discussed. If someone writes about it or a news programme mentions it almost every time they either let time cover up the facts; claim that it’s fake in order to buy enough time for the country to remember it; the Corporation is given a pathetic slap on the face with velvet gloves or the Tipping Point happens when the Corporation is fined and some of it’s Cuts are removed. Then the Corporation declares Chapter 7, which allows them to sack employees, they close locations and pay more for less. That’s not attractive to most, so they Fire Sale their assets and announce massive closures or even remove their presence from an entire country in lieu of a better return on investment (ROI) and move to locations where overhead, safety, employees’ healthcare and pensions are repressed or eliminated completely. And the building where they started off as Superstars is used in a limited capacity or is closed completely, as we see here at Cincinnati Mall. What an Experiment!

I really enjoyed this two-part series. I live in the area and used to go to this mall, especially when it was Cincinnati Mills and they had a lot of outlet stores. My favorites were Wilsons Leather Outlet and Steve & Barry's. I stopped going when it got to the point that fewer stores were in the mall and it felt unsafe because of how empty it was. This mall never worked because of where it's located. There are two other malls just a few miles away, right off the same freeway, I-275. Both of those malls are also struggling at this point, but historically they were doing better for longer. There are also a couple of strip malls at the same exit across the freeway that seem to be doing okay. And at this point, the popular shopping spots are in West Chester, Monroe (both outdoor shopping/lifestyle centers), also Kenwood, and to some degree Florence, KY (both indoor malls). Forest Fair never stood a chance.

It’s weird thinking that security car is just there abandoned for ten years. You’d think at a bare minimum the company that owns it would have sold it when they no longer needed it or a manager would have taken it. To just leave it there to rot seems frivolous. And heaven knows how long that mirror has been busted off. But there’s always the possibility that the business that owned it and is responsible for it no longer exists. Then again it IS a Ford. Found on road dead. Fix or repair daily. Hell, they should have junked it. And after ten years that registration plate has been reassigned. But I digress, dude you are either super brave or freaking crazy. I would never go to a dead mall at night

I watched the daytime exploration you did and watching the night time one, I started to think that it can be a location for science fiction movies, it looks like the inside of a space station; I watched the series: The expanse and it sorts of look like it. It is great to see a mal with lights on and a minimum of care; it is not trashed and the lawn is still cut. It deserves praise for this at least. I would say it is like walking into a museum, or a modern art exhibit t.,it is a museum of mall architecture. Thank you for the great work showing it and researching the history, you're a curator of mall artefacts.

I'm really enjoying your expeditions and I just recently came across your channel. If you would like any suggestions, there is a Mall in Cleveland TN that I came across on a drive a couple years ago called Bradley Square Mall. While I was there it was still in operation but not more than 30 people there, many stores were empty and the only ones I saw were a jewelry store, game store, a little bounce house place for kids, Lazer tag and a beautiful cinema. The employees I talked to said that business like the Lazer tag and kids place only last about a month and they are gone and they said the mall was dying a slow death. To my knowledge it's still open, but that's just from searching Google as I haven't been back. Another one that is dying out is Knoxville Center Mall also in TN. I have watched it dwindle away over the years and have seen it in its prime. I have heard that someone had purchased it and was attempting to bring it back to life, much like the mall we had in Oak Ridge which was demolished and rebuilt as a strip mall (I had the pleasure of walking around it many times before it did, even as a child that mall was almost dead with only a Petros, Dollar General, Belk and JC Penney.), but I have seen nothing to support that. I apologize for rambling on lol I just genuinely enjoy urban exploration, especially Malls and get excited when someone is able to capture it all before it's gone. Thank you for what you do and sharing these places of beauty! It is most appreciated.

I would turn it into an indoor community. Put in a bunch of condos, a supermarket, a bank, retail stores, a park area on the roof for picnics, proper bars, an amusement park, and then it will be a self contained town with proper security. Someone needs to do that fast before the place becomes structurally unsafe. At least it's not beyond repair...yet.

Gustave Frankfurter unfortunately it is in one of the poorest suburbs of Cincinnati. There is a mall 20 minutes away in kenwood, which is a pricey area and they have opened gigantic shopping outlets in Monroe, about 20 minutes north. There unfortunately just isn’t the money in this area to support much of anything anymore. And it’s a high crime area right off of an extremely congested section of highway. I agree with you tho that it’s sad to watch such a giant structure fall into disrepair.

First up, them poor lil orb weavers won't hurt you. Bite like a minor bee sting and you'd have to try to get bit at that. Anyhoo... I find it so odd that there are so many malls in the USA that are just failing or abandoned. Never seen that here in Aus. Even most of our least busy malls in poorer areas have the majority of tenancies occupied. A mall like this in a similar location would thrive in Aus. We have several of similar (and larger) and all doing great. Is it just poor management or is it to do with the GFC (we had almost zero crisis here compared with y'all). Also, never seen buildings so big sitting vacant for so long as some of your abandoned malls do. We'd either repurpose it or knock it down and do something else with the space. It wouldn't sit there for years on end. Or at least, I haven't seen that done yet. 😜
@rainscratch
@rainscratch 5 жыл бұрын
Same situation as abandoned theaters and cinemas - in the US they seem to sit derelict for decades - some for nearly 100 years!! in other parts of the world including as you say Australia - these sites are demolished quick smart and the land used for something else. There must be something about the way US property taxes or laws work that allows or causes this to happen.
@frodzie
@frodzie 5 жыл бұрын
@@rainscratch Thanks for responding! Property laws makes sense. I guess technically everything here is "crown land" or more accurately "commonwealth land". So they probably have the right to intervene if it goes unused? I'll have to look into it. The closest example I remember was our local open air mall. Council sold it to a Singaporean firm who upped rent till no one could pay. So they bought it back and refurbished it and now its a thriving location. But it was fairly dead for a good few years. Lotsa townies. 🤣🤣 Anyway, got a bit of research to do.

Go to back to this video, and at about 4:32, when you guys are walking through the garage, see if you hear a whisper that says "get out" or something phonically similar. I ran it back several times, its like an EVP but I heard it with the naked ear. Right after you were asked "Did you see something" and you said "I thought I did." Great video. Malls should be tax free for tax purposes to save them. Or just turn them in living spaces. No need to tear down these massive buildings

What seems interesting is the location for such a mall. Ohio seems like a largely obscure place for such activity. I have heard people describe Ohio as poor and bland, with nothing to really offer. On the other hand, I am not surprised with malls closing due to the online marketplace. I live in Minneapolis, MN, and very close to the Mall of America in Bloomington, and Southdale Center in Edina. I would actually be surprised if either of these malls closed, particularly Mall of America.

Ah yes orb web spiders. They only come out at night and love to build their webs where you'll run into them. Around here it's "kill on sight". (not afraid of spiders, but in my case some are ok, others die).

I was curious who was responsible for all the theming, and now that you've said it was the Mills Corporation, it makes a ton of sense why this mall reminds me so much of the former St. Louis Mills (now St. Louis Outlet Mall, although it's 92% vacant). It's also themed out in an OTT way, and was also sold to Simon Properties. And it was also WAY too large for the area it was in. St. Louis Mills has an ice rink, LOL. It also had a go-cart track, indoor skate park, and a mini golf place. They are literally twins of each other, except that St. Louis Mills was built all on one level. It's now going to be repurposed as a Sports Complex, so at least it's not going to waste like this one is. Hopefully they can come up with some sort of plan for Forest Fair!

Love the War of the Worlds soundtrack soaked in reverb. Malls just don't meet the current year's idea of shopping. I lived in a couple in my youth (Cherry Hill, Echelon, and Deptford malls in New Jersey in the 80s) but that was then and this is now. The Intertubes killed them off.

I think also the economy is also to blame for most of it. Also related to the whole internet killing malls and any form of retail alike; I think it's more of people being TOO DAMN LAZY to go out and shop or even do anything! They just all wanna stay home all day and all night probably wanting to only jack-off to pronno until they have a heartattack and possibly die from it! A sad insight into modern day American society... No wonder why obesity is a major problem compared to anywhere else!

@@NathanDavisVideos I don't know I live in S. Carolina, and the parking lots of stores are always full, it's not that people don't want to get out, it's just people want their stuff, and want it cheap like Walmart, Dollar General, Target, TJMaxx, etc.. cheap, or when they buy online eBay, and Amazon cheap, and most malls just can't compete.

12:00 if im correct, the place youre walking in is larger than 1.5m square feet. The 1.5 million is the retail alone (stores, anchors, etc.) So the indoor section itself is around 200k-300k square feeta added to the size.

I remember the movies that had the flashing lights in the front. They caused kids to go into seizures. If it were my place I'd probably secure it and make a large indoor medical pot farm.

Damn, the DDR machine at 21:30 just sitting there not plugged in gave me feels. That's many hours of my teenage years. Would love to have it for myself, but I'm in Australia. Speaking of Australia, does anyone know what kind of spiders they were in the video? Australian spiders would call them "snacks", but what's the human name for them?
