Thanks for this video! I'm a high school student and I've been stressing to figure out what I want to stdy in colloge and do for a career. I cannot stand the idea of working a desk job and i love the outdoors and this job actually seems like something I would enjoy!

I wanted both desk job and outdoor job actually. I thought a forester would work into an office first then venture to the forests after.

Yeah man. Like this guy I came to Forestry late (25) worked my way up from invasive species control, through chainsaw work. Working with the Forestry Commission in the UK, through forest work supervisor and now I’m a forester. It’s a brilliant career. It’s hard work at the bottom but if you love it. You’ll really love it. Go for it young man!

Great video. My daughter is hopefully going into forestry. Seems very rewarding especially for those who desire to be in the woods.

I currently can't afford to get a degree but parks and nature have been my passion for my entire life (hell I helped build 4 trails @ paris mtn state park) I've volunteered there and countless other parks ever since I was young it broke my heart to see I needed a degree to get just about any job in the forest service are there positions that don't require a degree? My grandfather was in the forest service for 25 years id love to follow in his footsteps

@Chance Dudley there are usually plenty of jobs at the city, state, and federal level for both the parks & wildlife and forestry departments/service that dont require a degree. If you really want it, and are willing to make those sacrifices and work hard you can get one of those jobs. Now I dont know your personal situation, but federal level jobs like the forest service require you to relocate often for career advancement as well as the states department will do the same within the state. I see you are probably from around the South Carolina area so I don't know how wages exactly are over there. Usually these jobs that dont require a degree dont pay much but they're definitely better than you average wages/ salary. So seeing that you would enjoy it. You could make those location and wage sacrifices to get that job that you want, and often the department/service your with will sponsor continuing education and possibly a degree so you can keep progressing. Just look for resource specialist, forestry technician, wildlife technician, and other similar job names. Make sure your fully read the job description so you know what it entails and your getting yourself into. As long as you take pride in the work outside, you'll enjoy it! Good luck!

Is this a challenging career with a ton to learn like geology? I am thinking of doing forestry instead of geology because I love the adventure/outdoors but I want to have a family some day. I have ADD and NEED a career that is full of variety, lots to learn, and challenging, creative thinking or else I lose motivation. Thank you!

Would you say that a career in forestry is possible for a woman? I am concerned over whether it will require lots of body strength. I don't mind physical labor, as I do weight lifting and a lot of exercise already, but I'm afraid of it being above my strength ability.

Forestry is a great career for anyone who likes to be outdoors and manage forests. Many of my friends from school are women who work in forestry; some as field foresters and some in more office related work - in about the same mix as my male classmates. For a field position strength is not as important as endurance, as sometimes walking all day through rough terrain is necessary. Even within the wildfire aspect of the job there are a multitude of different positions for all fitness levels, from logistics and communications to pulaski motor (digging line all day). The NWCG (National Wildfire Coordinating Group) work capacity test involves walking 3 miles in 45 minutes with a 45 lb vest at the "arduous" level, which would qualify you (fitness-wise) for any wildfire job.

I know this was three years ago, but im actually going to school to be a resource forester and I'm a girl! Yes, from what I hear, it can be physically demanding. But you should be able to work with other people to help! Even if it means having the dudes do more physical work!

I have like 12000 questions! I am looking into Forester as a career choice, or possibly a Wildlife Biologist. From what I have found so far it's hard to have a family as a wildlife biologist. How is family life with a career in Forestry? What's a typical day as far as hours? How much traveling? I'm a single mom with 4 young kids so my family is very important to me.

Are there lesser known jobs similar to forestry that one might not readily know about without being in the forestry business for a while? I'm curious what other sorts of positions might be out there for someone interested in working in the woods but who might not have a four year degree.

Are there entrepreneur routes I can take with a Forestry degree? Can I start my own business consulting people or is this business idea impossible to start up? Also what would be a good minor to pair with a forestry degree?

Bbaby Baby best advice I can give you is get your boots dirty and your feet wet. Do the entry level stuff and cut a few trees. Marry the dirty work with the theory.
