Materials scientists and engineers at Duke are leaders in founding this field of work that uses artificially structured materials to control and manipulate light, sound and many other physical phenomena. The result is better acoustic sensors, acoustic “tweezers” that move cells around, eight spinout companies and even an “invisibility cloak” that renders objects undetectable at microwave frequencies.
