listening once again to this gem of a song takes me back to my halcyon days of yore, when i first heard its original version wafting harmoniously from an old jukebox, while a carefree friend and i, each with an ice-cold beer in hand, were leisurely shooting the breeze one starry, cool and moonless night. truth be told, i was so helplessly carried away by its haunting melody and poetic albeit somewhat enigmatic lyrics, and by the wistfulness and poignancy of the query it posed: "do you really want to live forever?" i mean, how more profound can one get than asking something like that? on a deeper level, this song never fails to evoke a nostalgic feeling inside of me each and every time i listen to it all these years - an emotion that, for whatever reason, i can't seem to precisely convey. perhaps the closest i can get to describing it is that this song, particularly this fantastically awesome and very inspiring cover by two of the most beautiful, soothing and mesmerizing voices i've had the supreme privilege of listening to in my life, makes me totally feel "forever young", as its title goes. the music being set against the backdrop of sea, sand and sky, with jada's hair freely swaying in the wind, and she and dave frolicking in the sand, there could be nothing more glorious than that. from someone fantasizing about taking a rejuvenating bath in the mythical fountain of youth, and somehow being fascinated by the concept of eternal life, here's to "forever"! 🌌
