Hey everyone and welcome back to Empty Pockets Ironworks. Chris here, hope everyone has remained in good health since last week.
For this weeks video I thought I would demonstrate how i make our Coal shovels, These vary in length and are paired nicely with our fire pokers, spatulas and other fire tending tools. The channel is growing, were already almost to 1500 subs! I will no doubt do another giveaway once we reach that milestone. I may do a mid week video with an instruction on how I create my templates and the theory I have created with halves when designing skull templates. for those of you that wish to make your own templates maybe there will be something you can takeaway from the video.
I had recorded an intro to this video and had a few key things I wanted to discuss but it had to be scrapped as I was about 3 minutes in and the lovely neighbors mutts decided to start barking at absolutely everything....they are the type that bark at everything all hours- day and night and really serve no purpose other than keeping the grass virtually non existent and escaping constantly. Typically while recording any intro I have to record 2-3 due to random barking today I didn't have the fight in me. I so long to live back outside city limits but as we own this home and shop i fear we may be stuck for a few more years.

How long is the initial length of the angle iron before forming it? Beautiful work!!

Thank you, this particular one was 11.5 inches. If course a tad longer won't hurt and will allow you to get in behind and weld a bit easier. Thank you for watching

Hi how did you sketch out that pattern for the shovel any chance of getting a copy of it?

Hello, it's actually just a design I came up with based on some similar shovels I had seen. It's a bit larger then a normal swage pattern. I have the template saved and can add it to our template inventory that's pdf downloadable sometime tomorrow after work. We have an out of town show today and won't be back till late. Can shoot an email to [e-mail] and just put in that you had some with me about the shovel template and we can get you set up.

What thickness (metric if you don't mind) are you using for the scoop part?

Thank you for the comment, it's 14 gauge or approximately 2.0 mm light but string enough with side bends to be useful.
