Forged Down Under | Ep 2 | Part 1 | Camping | Battle of the Blacksmiths Australia

"Forged Down Under" is filmed in Queensland, Australia, at the Savage Custom Creative workshop. Savage Custom Creative specializes in knife making and blacksmithing classes. Our goal is to get as many people interested in and participating in our hobby.
"Forged Down Under" was created to showcase the Australian talent we have in the knife making and blacksmithing community and hopefully get more people interested in our hobby! We also aim to make the industry more friendly, as we're all here to help each other.
Each episode is split into two videos - Part 1 & Part 2. Each episode has a theme and is made up of 3 rounds. Contestants receive a challenge that they must start in round 1 and finish in round 2. Each round is judged based on a rubric and the final score from both round 1 & 2 combined, will decide who moves on to round 3, where they will get a new and more advanced challenge. The winner of round 3 will become a "Forged Down Under" champion.
"Forged Down Under" is unique, as we only give the contestants a theme to follow, and the creativity of how they interpret the theme is wholly up to them. This creates a much more fluid and entertaining approach. Sometimes, giving fewer guidelines is better, as contestants have to battle the urge to overcomplicate the build in a time-constrained environment.
Our judging is also different. We judge the contestants on a rubric for Round 1, based on three categories, with a 1-5 points scale per category, per judge. Then, in Round 2, we judge them on a more complex rubric of five categories. This gives the contestants who think about their approach a more strategic path. If you're smart, you can guarantee high points in a couple of categories or maybe aim for an average across all categories.

Glad to see you back with episode 2. Visited the Sydney Knife Show today (12/8/23) at Rosehill, got to talk to a lot of makers, and saw demonstrations, really enjoyed the day even though I don't forge. I find this stuff fascinating.

I was impressed with young Tristan, especially in that final interview... a nice kid with skills who might not win on the day, but learned from the experience - what a great attitude in life. Pretty good job on all the pieces. I really liked the big guys knife and then the young guys knife on the look of the blade shape. I liked the fork/spit aswell. Everyone did a really good job. Have fun you guys! .

Good for the young man for putting up a good fight. In my opinion, he had the most aesthetically pleasing fork, and I’d argue that it could also be used as a general fire poker.

Love that we are pushing an aussie smithing comp. May i add some suggestions? Perhaps when judging you could try to remember the scores given so that you're not all holding bits of paper. Secondly, perhaps you could make sure that your themes arent so vague, especially when they are being judged on adherence to the theme. What i mean is when i think of barbecue or camping is likely to be quite different to someone elses interpretation. This has the potential to be an absolute ripper of a show and i reckon you are 95% of the way there. Keep it up and thanks for making the content.

at 21:40 the blueing of metal is a technique machinists use to, to let us know where the grinder or tool is cutting, so we know how much metal is being removed, and if it is removed evenly on a long surface.( as a marking out tool, like pencil on wood)

I'm really enjoying the show. It's a nice alternative to the "other" bladesmithing show (which I watch loyally). I have one small observation: The audience never gets to hear the sounds of the craft because of the music. It would be nice if we could hear the hammer striking the anvil, or the grinder tearing away the steel, but the music is always drowning out those sounds.

I really enjoy your show. I cannot say I agree with the judging in the first round. You seem to be basing your judging on what you think a camping set should be. If that is the case then why not just specify it up front. The scoring really hurts the competitors on a very subjective opinion. I think that Mike lost points on his fork, but at the end where it could be used as a spit or a pot holder was a great idea. I think this really put Tristan in a really bad spot where it would be super difficult for anyone to pull out of. In the future I think you should comment at this break but assign no points. Tristan did ultimately fail by not addressing the weight of his fork as you all pointed out. Again, great show and I enjoy it a lot.

Thinking a 3 prong Fork, A Modified large Bowie stylized knife. A dark wooden coffin style handle with a orange linner, brass pins, and a mosaic through pin, and a lanyard hole. A bowie type S shape cross guard. A good oversized 10" Clip Point Blade, with saw back, and with fuĺlers.

great show, but for the start a safety point, NEVER use a gas torch or fuelled lighter to fire up a burner!, the gas could flash back into the lighter and blow the fuel tank!, why oxy welders use flint style igniters; but here put some kindling on a stick and put inside the furnace, a lot safer for you, and the cameraman behind filming you 🙂

My couple of cents worth of handle construction There's a 3 sided screwdriver brand kin etc now how I realised there ability of grip They had there handle an at other end the usual handle I gripped twisted lol near tore my hands skin off in the normal handle It pointed out to me We have 3 didget on fingers If it's a blocky rectangular shape rounded edges or not Grab a Bic lighter It's very comfortable in hand To triangle that size an give shape Is the optimum handle size
