I have read that some cavalry blunted the sabers because they were getting caught in bone. The duller saber still cut human flesh and often broke the bone. This is just color commentary and I can't provide a reference. I'm not defending the dull saber. I haven't watched the end of this so I don't know who won.

Doug Marcaida is an immensely talented martial artist of over 25 years of experience and master of several different Filipino blade styles, including Kali (not only traditional, but also one he developed himself!) and Eskrima. Skallagrim is an enthusiast that talks history on youtube, and while he does have some education and practice working with blades, he will be the first to admit that he is NOT an expert.

@@spamhere1123 Not every blade technique is synonymous to foreign designs. The method of draw cutting with an English Longsword. a Japanese Katana, or Chinese jian or dao is unique to those martial arts styles. While Skallagrim is by no means an expert, he studies Historic European Martial Arts with historic combat specialists which specialize in European weaponry which they often reproduce in the show. It doesn't even have to be Skal coming in, I chose him because I'd just like to see any cameo from a history buff or blacksmithing youtuber on a big show like that.

I dont know a lot about swords but for a hussar (hit and run light cav) wouldn't a heavy forward sword be better? Since you aren't armored enough to stay and fight?

Depends on the hussar type and time period. Polish "Winged" Hussars were a super heavy shock cavalry, they had enough armour to not have to worry about early firearms that were used by the Ottomans. I would say a heavier sabre would work better for any cavalry really given thet would go for one strike and line up another target.

The hussar (huszár) sabre must be forward heavy. You only use this blade while rideing a horse, and not a slow one, cuz the hussars are extremely fast units.

well all that depends on period of hussars,there were times when they had almost no armor at all,and there were times where they had full plate on them.But in both cases you wouldn't want forward heavy weapon that can fall out of your hand,you have momentum already thanks to the horse no need for more,if they needed heavy weapons they wouldn't even use saber but spear as it gives larger reach.Also when cavalry unites first engage they are going at great speed but after that is just an old fashioned slow fight to death.But in case of them attacking footsoldiers blades are secondary,plenty of them will die to horses.

Levente Vincze WRONG, sabers were used by BOTH mounted hussars and foot soldiers so it's not exclusively a cavalry weapon. And even if it was used only by cavalry soldiers that wouldn't mean it has to be too forward heavy, as even cavalry sabers are fast and nimble weapons, therefore those should not be noticeably forward heavy either. They are slashers, not choppers.

Why is a historic weapons specialist slashing with a cavalry saber? General Patton had to teach the US Army what he learned at the French Cavalry Sword, which is that you must use the point of the cavalry saber.

@@dywan0 Wrong. Hussars first appeared in Hungary and Serbia in the 15th century. Winged hussars were a later version, that was typical for Poland. After that, hussar units were used even by England. Hussar is just simply a type of light cavarly. Saying hussar is like saying knight.

Overall the older guys sword performed better, the only issue was it was a little forward heavy and in the strength test where the handle pierced into the guys hand. But that is less severe than doing poorly in the sharpness test.
