Its always great when both contestants know what their doing and produce great work. Even the loser didn't really fail. Those wooden pegs can be sanded down by anyone and it's not a big deal. I have received swords with the same problem and it's not that terrible.

@@armita_md Yeah, I'd do a nailed steel band wrap if I was to try patching that up. that handle was wrecked. Realistically the only good option would be to replace the handle, but can't do that mid competition.

So one thing about that moment at 15:22, because it's very rare that a judge will further comment on a weapon after a winner is called. That guy looked pretty upset that he won that way, but Doug makes that comment about his reinforced handle to tell him that he truly did win the competition fair and square, since paying attention to that handle construction was an integral part of the whole contest. This shows you that the judges are actually really great guys.

I saw one of the episodes where this guy lost in the final just because he didn't pay attention to make a curve on his blade as the judges asked. Disqualified, not even tested.. can't imagine how bad that feel

Well, requirement is requirement.they must be as close as perfection. Anyway the judges did say "for the safety reason". The wood is the one that connect the blade to the hands, make it usable. if it broke, the blade will fall, then how the wielder would use the blade? Thatll be a total mess.

I like that 2nd smith that did the Naginata. This is when you knew that he's a real men instead of a pompous one. Like, it's a competition. People would wanna win any way they want but instead of being a winner who shows off after taking a cheap win, he's genuinely concerned about the entire process that his damaged blade gets to pass while the other guy's blade was fine except for a split shaft and is there any way they can fix it on the spot to keep on going so he can win fairly. That takes courage to do.
