I appreciate everyone’s praise. I was the second place contestant. I gained so much more from appearing on this show than any money could buy. I met wonderful people and was able to prove some things to myself, beyond bladesmithing. As a human being I have improved from this experience. I believe the decision was correct and I commend Walters work. Pertaining to the text I inscribed on the blade, with the limited time I had and not being fluent in either Kurdish or Arabic as well as not having weeks to study the subject I found several interpretations of the mans name and used the common denominator. Which as it turns out I’m told is in fact correctly written in Kurdish. I did my best with the time I had... thank you everyone please enjoy the show for what it is... entertainment.

@@msrlapin99 Actually No, the winners weapon is kept to remain in a "winners hall of fame", the "hall" itself is off frame because the collection has gotten large, but they pull a handful out of the hall to hang around the judges table for each episode. The losers weapons can be seen strewn around the walls of the forge. I know all this because I actually wanted to try the competition, and researched it. What made you guys come to your assumptions? I barely care but I am baffled by the incorrect assumptions I'm seeing here, like the idea of all the losers get their weapons back, why do you think there's so many familiar looking weapons hung around the forge? Why would they either 1; have all past contenders ship their weapons back for decor each episode, or 2; recreate an identical copy of DOZENS of unique mishaps. Both options taking many hours and THOUSANDS of wasted dollars. The best thing to do and WHAT THEY DO, is keep the products of every contestant that enters, and give the winner 10k, it's not complicated. I've now said what needed to be said.

The actual sword of Saladin almost 100% did not look like any of those. That type of sword is more of the Ottoman or Persian style of the 14th century onward. It wasn’t until after the Mongol/Turkic invasion and influence much later that Middle Eastern swords began to be curved. Prior to that the vast majority were straight swords. All that being said these gentlemen did an outstanding job

While it is true that the Arabs during the Early Muslim conquests of the 7th and 8th century, and up until the end of the Umayyad Caliphate, used a straight longsword similar in design to the Greek Xiphos (yet still marginally unique), by Saladin's time, the curved blades of the Turks had become the norm, especially as they were mostly used for fighting on horseback. An interesting trivia is that Arabic has over a hundred names for the term sword (that I know of) yet the most common one is Saif (سيف) which is very close to the prononciation of the Greek Xiphos.

It especially threw me off when the new guy just told the loser to leave and didn't offer a handshake or anything (maybe cause of covid?) Also, Dave Baker really seemed like he didn't want either of them to lose with how much he complemented the loser's blade

The lack of handshake is purely because of COVID. Notice that during the testing, the competitors are also standing apart. You can tell about when COVID started to become a situation during the filming of S8 because the work in the FiF forge people are closer together, but then a bunch of the testings the contestants are further apart and there's no handshakes, then eventually everything including the stuff in FiF's forge is shot with everyone apart.

One thing for sure i would love to see the swords Al battar and Al ma’thur and these were swords used by the prophet Muhammad and al battar the sword of the prophets has the names David Solomon Moses Aaron Joshua zechariah John Muhammad and Jesus inscribed in Arabic and it also has a drawing of king David cutting of the head of the giant Goliath and the blade of the sword has a length of 101 centimeters and it is also claimed that this sword will be used by Jesus when he returns to earth to defeat the anti christ Dajjal but al ma’thurs blade length is 99 centimeters and the handle is made of gold in the shape of two serpents and is encrusted with emeralds and turquoise and near the handle is an inscription saying the name of Muhammad’s father but among other swords that belonged to Muhammad other three famous swords are Al Adb which means cutting or sharp and Al Qadib and this sword was 100 centimeters in length with a scabbard of dyed animal hide and on the Side of the sword in silver is the inscription there is no god but god Muhammad the apostle of god and this sword wasn’t used in battle but instead it was used as a sword of defense or companionship for a traveler and among the most famous blades of Muhammad had to be the sword Zulfiqar which was taken as botty by Muhammad at the battle of badr and it is reported that Muhammad gave the sword to Ali the fourth caliph of the rashidun Calliphate and that Ali returned from the battle of Uhud covered with blood from his hands to his shoulders

Unfortunately it is inscribed on the pronunciation of saladin in English; like he dissected the word into "suh luh deen" and then inscribed the translation to these sounds so it's basically a deconstructed "suh luh deen" written in arabic instead of "salah al-din" which was his name in arabic. It's a pretty decent attempt and I like that he did it, moreover I appreciate that he had the ability to inscribe the sounds and decorations without taking from the quality of his sword

The reason they don’t give money to the other competitor when it’s a close call is because they BUY the winning knife for 10,000. You have to remember that these guys audition to be on the show so they give them a budget for materials, hotels, food etc. it all comes down to the finer details and Walters knife was just that much sharper that he won. Brian’s sword was absolutely beautiful as well.

well, there's an anecdote on the combat between Saladin and Richard the Lionheart through which both kings decide to show their superiority to each other by demonstrating the power of their swords. First Richard the Lionheart brought his massive, giant size sword out of its shield and thrust it into a rock, the rock split in two with a loud crack. In the next step, Saladin command to bring him a pillow and just gently put his curved sword from the edge on the pillow; in the surprise of everyone the pillow tore apart by a clean cut due to the sharpness of the sword's blade. obviously there's a metaphorical meaning in this anecdote, pointing to a fundamental cultural difference between the two civilization: the West and the East. the west representing masculinity and the east representing the feminine stream of life, although both play a complementary role for each other.
