Thanks a lot! i do a lot of flash tattoo, but recently i'm looking to get into just painting whatever i come up with without so many rules in place, this helps out a lot as the imagery i often work with is the peak of simplicity (in a very complicated way)

I'd love to see some videos on the more tonal/painterly style you mention at 58:56! A big point of growth in my personal art was realizing I'm not terribly good at or ultimately interested in doing the kind of cartoony or linework focused style that dominates a lot of youtube/social media art, I have a lot more success in creating a finished piece I actually like when I'm doing something which has an ability to just forms with smearing/push-and-pull, that greater emphasis on tones, rendering, etc. A from imagination process video would be cool. I find working from reference in that style comparatively easy, but when working from imagination I find I run into fairly fundamental issues in terms of forms and composition and so on. In particular I find the thumbnailing/early process quite difficult - I'm not at all confident whether I should be sketching/shape carving/mass drawing, I like working with colours as early as possible in the process but that can cause issues, etc.

Thanks! Yeah the gamut mask is an interesting idea. There are a lot of ideas like this which help to create order within the image (like bracketing colors or values). I think trying these out will help you to understand how everything works. Personally when I am creating I like to be more intuitive, but that intuition is built on doing many little experiments like this. Also I come from a digital world so some of those limited pallet concepts might be more useful for traditional painters where adjusting color or going back is not an option. I am so geared towards adjusting colors at the end I think my process works a bit differently. I prefer to think about relationships between colors knowing I can adjust the intensity (and probably thus the overall gamut) later on.

This is something I could never conceptualise about digital painting, yet it's quintessential in traditional art. Ixalan already has "Native Americans" in the Sun Empire. I would have really liked to see some of the Great Plains tribes represented in White, and some of my home state Utah tribes represented in Red. Utah means "people of the mountains." They also had all the Mexican people helping them with Ixalan, why didn't they have them help with like a Mexico influence on Thunder Junction... I've been complaining about multiple iterations of the same Legendary characters for many sets now it's not really a Thunder Junction problem... I make the joke "I don't want 50 Chandras" but its hardly a joke anymore. Like why couldn't we just get a new original necromancer instead of what, our 5th Gisa now? 4th Geralf I think?
