Hi everyone! Today I want to tell you about a very important topic - scaffolding for tomatoes. If you haven't created this structure yet or have made it a hut, then this installment is absolutely not to be missed. I'll show you why you shouldn't use this method and most importantly, I'll provide you with a perfect alternative that will allow you to create a solid structure for your tomatoes to thrive. So without further ado, the time has come to discover together the ideal solution for your tomato plants.
At the beginning of the video, we see an example of a gabled scaffolding that looks like an Indian hut. However, our goal is not to protect or shelter ourselves, but to grow tomatoes. This method consists of joining four rods tied to a high point, usually 1.80-2 meters high. But what is the main problem of this structure? When the plants begin to grow, the leaves create shaded areas which slow down fruit ripening. Furthermore, the shade prevents adequate air circulation, favoring the onset of fungal diseases.
But don't worry, I have the solution! We start by removing the center barrel and spacing the other two barrels apart to create a bi-row structure. This will allow for more light and better air circulation. Instead of tying the plants up, we go down and tie them about 80-90 cm from the ground. In this way, we will avoid the formation of shaded areas and will favor a correct ripening of the fruit. We use a biodegradable thread to tie the plants and to join the canes together.
The structure we get is solid and robust. The two tomato plants will move away from each other, allowing them to get some sun and benefit from good air circulation. This method, which I have personally tested, has proved to be very effective and I highly recommend it.
