I’m glad you did not sustain a serious injury. I spent over 40 years as a chemist working with REALLY dangerous things and we have it drilled into us that safety glasses are a must. Still, every once in a while you think “oh, this is not that bad/or quick so I don’t need them” and bang! Disaster happens. You reminding us all of this is really important. Everyone should remember that PSP should be on the top of your list always. That includes me. Thanks again Chris.

Good on you for bringing this out. Back in my machinist days, everyone who entered the shop was required to wear, at a minimum, safety glasses. If you get friends, family, or delivery visits during your work day, they too should be advised to always wear safety specs before entering the shop. My family used to sneak in and stand at the shop entrance waiting to catch my attention and/or not startle me while I was performing an operation. The entry to my shop is right in "kickback alley." So now PPE is required to even look inside the shop. It's hung on the wall outside so there's no excuse.

I sustained an injury to the cornea on one of my eyes from a chip that was thrown from a router that someone else was operating 25 to 30 feet away. That was almost 30 years ago and at least twice a year that injury, tears again, leaving me with about a week of pain and what appears to everyone around me to be pink eye. As a result, I carry a really nice leather eyepatch with me in my computer bag whenever I travel. Thank goodness most of us start out with a pair of good eyeballs, and we really need to be careful that they remain so. Great video, Scott.

Wow, you got lucky! That is exactly how fast it can happen. I have had similar experiences and it definitely scares the hell out of you. You may remember me telling you in the past that I am a Safety Professional and while I was working as a Safety Manager, I would push safety glasses all the time. That and complacency. Complacency happens to us all, that’s why work place injuries happen to so many people who are very experienced in their job. I would tell people that complacency won’t bite you until it does, you just never know. I am very happy that you were able to dodge that bullet. Thank you for doing a video on it, people need to understand the importance of safety.

Chris, great, great, great point. I don’t deal with much resin, but HAD NO IDEA about what it’d do. I think you should make this more apparent to woodworkers. I know myself that I do some things without proper protection. Sometimes just a ‘quick, simple cut’ and I’ve been lucky some mishaps happen that could have hurt me. And think to myself, I’m such an idiot and it was a sign to always be proactive. Yet I sometimes still do it! Guess that makes me human. Anyway, I think this needs more attention because I didn’t know about resin and I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone mention the effects either!

Due to this is has become instinct to remove normal glasses and immediately replace with safety glasses. Its like a constant reminder. Before needing normal glasses I would forget the safety glasses every so often. Thankfully the worst that ever happened was sawdust in my eyes. Glad you got lucky with that one. Stay safe bud and enjoy your next project.
@bruce-le-smith Жыл бұрын
good video. had an experience like this recently while pruning a tree, had glasses on but somehow a branch got caught under another branch, and then shook loose an whipped upwards (instead of falling downwards). it popped the glasses upwards enough for a the branch to scratch my eye before I could blink. eye doctor cleaned a bit of bark out of my lower eyelid and I was very lucky. bought a $75 forest helmet a couple weeks later and wear that over the glasses now. so a rogue branch has to push the fine metal mesh visor and the glasses out of the way now. there's a reason they call them accidents, we always think they can't happen to us because we've been fine/lucky so many times before. French River Woodworks has a good video about random kickback smashing his glasses into the bridge of his nose, looked very painful, figure the forest helmet would reduce that impact too.

Whenever I get a new prescription I go online and order a new pair of actual safety glasses. Whenever I am doing something that can create sparks, chips or splashes I also wear a face shield. Because of the story I'm about to tell, I wear my safety's in my shop all the time, even when not using machines and even though I'm the only one in the shop. In a mechanic shop I worked in, a guy was on one side of the large shop, just working on rebuilding a small pump..no one would ever think to need glasses for it... on the other side of the shop (again, think huge shop for fixing Semi trucks/trailers) another guy was sharpening a chisel on a bench grinder. Well, a tiny piece of that chisel flew all the way across the shop and hit first guy in the eyeball. That guy kept his eyeball, but no vision in it any more. He was a bit older. He had constant headaches, loss of concentration... His brain just could not adapt to the loss of the depth perception. With the loss of concentration he got distracted by someone, and forgot to tighten/torque the bolts on the 5th wheel plate. The truck was sent out, customer hooked up a trailer and drove down the highway only to suddenly lose that semi trailer in the middle of the highway, luckily not hitting anyone... Dude with the injury had to be fired. And he still has headaches every day and all the other symptoms... and hard to find a job when that is the only one you've done your whole life. All this because he wasn't wearing safety glasses in the shop, even when no one in the world would have thought for him to actually need to.

Hi, I had an eye dr appointment this morning and asked him about this. He said the resin would burn your eye. Immediately flush it with water, for at least 10 minutes, then immediately head to your eye dr (or ER if you don’t have an eye dr handy). The resin can be removed, but it will have caused a burn on your eye. The severity of the burn dictates the fix. Least case, you’ll get eye drops that will help your eye heal. Worst case, they apply a bandage that actually sits on your eye while it heals. He said they eye is actually incredibly resilient and you’d likely recover but I got the impression it would be painful and a bandage on your eyeball sounds like no fun at all. Thought you’d like to hear a medical opinion.

I know everyone wants to share their horror stories, but I was lucky that mine happened very early in my wood/metal career. When I was in freshman high school shop, we were continually and constantly reminded to use eye protection, or we’d be asked to leave the shop for the rest of the year. Everyone always complained, but we begrudgingly wore them. One Friday I was cutting some beautiful black walnut on the big table saw, when all of a sudden, I instinctively snapped my head back and turned away from the cut. The teacher was nearby and hit the kill switch to yell at me, but stopped mid sentence as I turned around. One of the cutting blades from the saw had broken loose and was actually stuck in my safety glasses just to the right of my right eye. I’ve NEVER (okay 99.95% of the time) not worn safety glasses since.

Thanks for sharing your story, but I would suggest you remember, that could have been an irreperable not ireputable accident. Earlier in my construction career, back in the 70's, I had a piping superintendent who was the poster boy for protective eye wear. He had walked past a person using a wire buffing wheel on a grinder when a small piece of wire broke off and flew into his left eye. Back then, the surgical procedures weren't like today, and he had to live with that visible piece about 1/8" or longer embedded in his ee with the edge almost touching the pupil. In our safety meetings with every crew, he would personally stand in front of each new hire and show them what could happen, and he was walking past the work when it happened. He always pointed out that it could have been much worse. I make safety moment presentations and my phrase is "Don't lose sight of the rest of your life" using him and other material to press home the point.
