Let's go another round with this aircraft carrier arresting cable and see what we can come up with this time! An integral blade with forge finish is made with stabilized curly acacia handles. Darth Vader weighs in and Steve laments Siri's dad joke prowess.
Yes the blade was tempered after quenching, I apologize for forgetting to mention this.

love when calm and unity contrasts the chaos in damascus, or vice versa. This knife is a bit messy with both handle and blade being chaos pattern.

Another good way to use cable without having to do a canister is weld the ends of the cable to help keep from coming undone then heat it up good and hot and flux it generously and use a vice and pipe wrench to twist the cable real tight then you can draw it out into a billet. Makes cool patterns.

That is a beautiful and heavy looking knife! I love your work! You don’t leave out your learning process and that helps other people feel welcomed. I knocked the flux off some incolnel welding rod once and twisted it up in some cable before I welded it together, turned out neat looking but som of it ended up on the edge so I didn’t complete the blade. Also, if you forge weld cable round, then grind off about 1/8” , then forge the blade, it leaves cool looking spots instead of lines.

If you left the oil on the cable I'd expect it to do some combo of 3 things as it approached welding temperature: - boil off - burn, reducing oxygen in the canister - carbonize, adding carbon to the mix. Flip side is the hydrogen, which is not so good for steel.

Steve, my father-in-law, god bless him, knowing that I like knives just gave me a Huusk Japan “knife” for Christmas. I did not have the heart to tell him to watch your video! He called today to say he had liked the look of it so had ordered one for himself too, but now that it had arrived he was really disappointed with it. BTW, with that “hand down” joke you just slayed Siri and claimed immortality for yourself in the field of Star Wars Dad jokes! She can never hope to match that sublime subtlety. Happy holidays to you and yours! All good fortune in the New Year!

All the best for 2022 The rusty-damascus reminds me a bit of the Big dog forge experiment with it, sort of that bright spots through the metal where the oxide might have burnt off its carbon or some other weirdness.

So for a billet like the second guy, with the cable lengthwise, maybe try twisting it 3-4 times, re-squaring, then tiling? That could be pretty neat. Might wind up with weird squiggly guys in there? Maybe?

You wouldn’t feel as obliged to grind it away I suppose if it got stuck to your billet.
@ColdHawk
@ColdHawk 2 жыл бұрын
@@GreenBeetle - Is that a way people could do a version of san mai? Try to get a good forge weld with the canister walls, grind the surface oxidation away after rough shaping it with a hammer and hey presto! It would give you a boring flat of the blade until the bevel gets deep enough to reveal the pattern welded steel. If you used nickel alloys you might get a really interesting contrast between dark grey or black flats of the blade and a cool pattern on the bevel when you etched. That would be wayyyyyy beyond my skill level but it would be interesting to see someone who knows what they are doing talk about it and what the overall advantages and limits of canister welding are. Especially interesting to hear it in practical terms - like, sure I understand that it gives one beautiful results, but how often do problems emerge that result in a “shorter knife than intended,” or blades with flaws that make them vulnerable to cracking, etc.
@whitebeard420
@whitebeard420 2 жыл бұрын
@@ColdHawk well after it was a solid billet you could cut it in half long ways and forge weld the billet walls back to eachother. Then you would have the hardenable steel canister walls in the center as the cutting edge and the canister insides as the patterns on both sides of the knife.
@ColdHawk
@ColdHawk 2 жыл бұрын
@@whitebeard420 - nice! I know that’s the way it usually done with the (better) high carbon steel in the center. I was thinking of using a lower carbon steel in the canister and wondering what it would look like with pattern welded high-carbon steel alloys emerging as the bevels deepened toward the edge, and perhaps as a strip along the spine. I have never seen a knife like that. Maybe getting it symmetrical in a flattened billet would be too hard to do - though easier than if one was cutting and rewelding the billet multiple times as a lot of people seem to do with great success. Anyway, just one cut up the center of the billet and forge welding the outside walls, of the same steel, together to make the center seems a lot easier to manage than many processes I have watched. Maybe someday I will be able to think of giving that a go. Cheers!
