Thanks! I did quench it in water, which maybe was a bit of a gamble but it worked 🤷‍♂️ I just need to get more used to quenching in oil. I would have to agree, I find myself partial to the Bowie too!

Most scrap metals I’ve found do decently with water, to be honest the main reason why I still water quench though is because I just got used to it when I was first starting. I plan on transitioning to oil quench sooner then later, it’s just a matter of buying the quenching oil and setting up a consistent tank haha

That's a pretty wicked job on that knife brother. It looked like water that you quenched it in. I know parks 50 or AAA oil is pricey but you can easly use canola oil. It's not as good but it's better than water.

Thanks, I’m proud of this one! I’ve been planning to switch over to a cheap alternative oil for a while now, just one of those things I need to get around too. Thanks for the advanced oil recommendations though, I will keep that in mind for the future!

@@ToddKoch not a worry. I too have just recently started blacksmithing. I lived in an apartment and saved up cash for when we moved to a place with a garage. Needless to say when the time came I started buying tools like crazy and now just today I have my shop set up and my forge was tuned on. So I'm excited lmao so much so that i went out and bought up a whole bunch of 10 foot lengths of flat, round, and square bar. Ima have some fun making stuff man 😁. Anyways keep up the good work! I’m glad for you!! That sounds so awesome I love hearing the stories of how people started up! For me personally, it was me and my friend in his parents garage with a basic coffee can forge. Practice is the best way to learn in my opinion, and it sounds like you are in the perfect path for that! I wish you the best in your forging endeavors! One of the smiths who taught me had an acronym for that type for that type of metal. He called it "FOG" metal.............."found on ground". No matter what it is the price is always right.

You did a great job as always. I have as of late gotten into making Kukri style knifes. A couple of questions for you, how fine of grit did you polish it down to? Also, have you ever tried or are you using wet/dry sandpaper?

I like that idea of calling it FOG metal I might star using that haha! Thanks for the support, I want to try a Kukri knife once I feel comfortable with that kind of shaping. I polished this one to 800 grit, and I normally dry hand sand, though I’ve heard that wet is beneficial for some reason. I’ve been meaning to look into that.

Bro this poor piece of discarded metal couldn't have asked for a better second chance at life, great job! I was uncertain about the handle material at first, but I hope after stabilizing it will be just fine. As for favourite knife shapes, I really like clip point knives, they're good for all kinds of stuff you do outdoors and it also looks great. Tanto seems interesting but I never owned any so I'm not sure.

Yeah for sure, it was way fun to transform it into a knife! The handle material should hold up, I tested another piece of the stabilized wood off camera and it held up pretty well. I do enjoy a good clip point knife too, it’s a useful blade shape! And as for the tanto, it’s funny that you would say that because I have a video in the works of me making a tanto that should be out in 2ish weeks!

Very impressive. To up your game, find someone who does rock work and have them make stone handles for your blades to make the total thing true works of art. I much prefer to see this stuff done by hand than all the high tech stuff I see the big names use. Thats cheating in my opinion.
