Progress on the sheep wagon continues! I rebuilt the grub box (supply box) and so today I'm taking you along while I forge a simple latch for it out of a rasp, a piece of angle iron, a rivet and chunk of flat iron. My kids help out in the shop and at the end I give an update on the rest of the project and also give you a quick peek at our newborn lambs.

I’m remodeling our chicken coop, and had to replace the doors and hardware. Now I know how I’m going to do the latches. Thanks for the inspiration! Your kids are really cute.

This video is a good example on how you show us a very nice blacksmithing project integrated on your homestead day to day chores. And at the same time you educate your children. Much more interesting than making a blacksmithing video exclusively to get views on YT.

To be honest I never realized herders lived in these things with their heard. Big sky country farming is a lot different from back east.

Ya! Sometimes they just used them in the summer time when they summered the sheep in the mountains, but other ranches used them for their herders year around.

Thank you! Although I can't take credit for that idea because that's how the old stall latch was made that inspired this hook...but it does work out perfect!

Sheep are looking good and so is that hand forged latch Jayce. Your daughter did an excellent job nailing that door together, not an easy task! My dad says the same thing to me about power tools, if the old timers had them they would've used them haha. Happy Tuesday buddy!

Thanks Danny! I did pre-drill and screw the door together in a few spots to help hold it together for her, then took the screws out when she was all done. Thanks for stopping by, have a good week!

At the moment the only thing in it is a pipe running through it where the original rod for the brake went through when it was a horse drawn wagon.

Handsome latch! Interesting about them stashing lambs in there, I didn’t know that sheep wagon tidbit. The place I work for long ago used to run a lot of sheep, so there are bundles and bundles of ‘sheep tent’ frames, which are simple steel frames with loops twisted into them in places, so that the frame could be driven in the ground and a canvas cover tied over it, and a fresh lamb and mother stashed inside. I’ve been using them as a supply of round stock, before they rust back into the earth 😂

Oh that's very interesting, I've heard of them but I didn't know how they worked. I figured they were like a tipi tent with just a pole in the middle. I've spent many a night in a tipi tent when I was packing mules in the Bob Marshall. Thanks for watching!

@@FarmsteadForge these are 4 legs, linked at one end by being formed into rings, with 1 ring going through the other 3, then a ring about 4 inches from the far end as a tie-off, and kind of a bend partway to the peak, so as far as I can tell, it would make a square mini wall tent but with a hip-roof shape.
