A little bit of advice for next time, if you're using rebar you really shouldn't use one that thin since rebar is an inferior metal. For that blade type you really also shouldn't sharpen the edges since it thins out the blade to much and makes it more of a saw blade than a sword blade. if you can get your hands on some 1045 i think that would be good its the lowest high carbon steel you can get. As a rule of thumb try to make the blade width about 2/3 of your hand and keep it at about 4mm. If you can fix the handle pommel and guard snugly to the blade that would help at giving it more durability and it would be comfier.I really liked the lost wax method though,it was a smart choice and it came out nice. Keep it up.

It is a bit on the thin side, so I think forging the bevel and tapering the blade would have greatly helped. Now the most important point would be to make your tang and handle not round, it would help greatly. So for a beginer project it was really good and I think that most little mistake do not have their origins in a lack of forging skills or practice but in a small lack of sword knowledge.
@dogsmile1007 жыл бұрын
Nathan Carrier Its meant to be thin, reappears are more meant for thrusting not so much slice and dice.
@nathanc9397 жыл бұрын
Nanners sea I know rapier but they usualy have a diamon shaped blade, because it make them better in the thrust by making them a little bit thicker. Choping blade are the one that should be thin. For exemple true historical falchion were way thiner than normal sword because they were 100% cut oriented and made to fight against unarmored opponet or gambeson.

You wont be getting disliked by me. One of the first things I forged was a "sword" from a lawnmower blade. Its a cutlass. I love it. Its obviously not good, but who cares. I had a blast making it. I suggest doing this again but from something like 5160. That is what I intend to do in the not too distant future. Probably going to make a Chinese Jin. That will be fun an challenging. Cool casting btw. That was my favorite part.

Keep up the good work. Make friends with a mechanic. Get a coil, leaf spring, sway bar and/or an A-arm from a car (or truck) suspension. That is some good, higher carbon spring steel for free. Same deal on the cheap from an automotive scrapyard. Just make sure you have someone that knows what they are doing removing coil springs, etc. A coil spring and strut can have 1000 - 1500 lbs of static compression; even on a small car. A 3/4" coil spring holds 3/4 of a ton, at normal ride height. That's enough force to decapitate a person or amputate a limb. Have fun. Work safe. A mechanic might give you an old ball peen hammer laying around the shop. Tell 'em what your up to, even show them the rapier. They will probably appreciate your handywork.

Actually, the rapier is a cut and thrust weapon.
@seanbean65987 жыл бұрын
tehlolercaust yes however he is using it to cleave and not cut. With any sort of thin fencing sword all of your technique will be coming from the wrist, which he wasnt doing. He was using his sword more as like a longsword or axe and using his whole arm. Btw early rapiers actually didnt have a cutting edge because they were used to beat knight in plate armor by striking at the gaps in their armor (above the knee, under the shoulder, between the neck and shoulder, the elbow etc.) so a cutting edge would be useless against the armor. Even a well made gambison would be extremely hard for a rapier to cut through. The cutting edge only came into the scene when plate armor became ineffective because guns were introduced and people just started wearing clothes into battle
@FailedPoet4447 жыл бұрын

This seems like a great idea to me. If you're considering trying to make a sword, here's a way to dip your toe in the pool without spending a fortune. With a bunch of general hand tools and a piece of scrap metal you can probably grab for free off a construction site, you can easily find out whether or not it's a thing you're interested in doing, or something you're just interested in watching others do.

@Darkditto1177 жыл бұрын
don't spend an absorbent time on something that will just break into pieces if used (trust me it's something i learned the hard way), you never use low carbon steel for a sword. especially not rebar, way to many imperfections/crap in the metal, for future reference I would suggest railroad clips they are made of 1070/1060 hardening steel and hold up rather well under stress and as a bonus they are free if you have a rail road near by, or alternatively trying to carbonize the rebar (not entirely sure that will work but worth a shot). also spend time on straightening/shaping by leaving wiggles in your blade you risk having stress buildup in those areas of the steel. your casting and turning are really good though i will have to experiment with pewter a little my boss and I always do bronze, copper or brass quilons and pommels. all in all not a bad first try. p.s. i do this for a living so i kinda need to know this stuff any other sword or knife related questions feel free to ask

Congratulations for your rapier! it is very functional and lethal whether they accept it or not, I leave a reminder that it is very stupid and unprofessional to underestimate an improvised weapon, it is a pointed and sharp piece of metal, human skin, flesh and organs can be injured even with a splinter from a branch, we can even injure ourselves with a plastic, so I recommend you review your criticisms towards yourselves.
